2013-2014 Albert Einstein Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I emailed my letter of interest awhile ago, yes.
I think the OP meant a letter/email from dean Kerrigan stating that they were reviewing candidates for the next round of HPWL acceptances and asking us our level of interest in AECOM at this time(different from the initial HPWL email)

Edit: Also, Congrats on your acceptance!!

Yes, that is what I meant. I don't have any acceptances yet, so obviously my interest is very high..patience, patience.

Sorry. I guess I just skimmed your message. No, I did not get any emails beforehand, but I made it clear that AECOM is my top choice in my letter of interest.

@bloodyhell I was wondering if you could attach for us an example of a typical weekly schedule (although I realize that probably varies from block to block). Thanks for the valuable feedback and information!

Hey,

So yea it really varies a ton depending on the courses you are taking and on the year (1st and 2nd year are very different in terms of the amount of classes/case conferences etc)

In first year, you have a lot of labs - because one of the first courses you start with is histology, and that has morning histo labs. Also in first year you start anatomy around the end of October, and then you'll have anatomy lab every morning at 10 AM for the next 4 months. So the first half of first year has a lot of morning labs. But after that, the rest of 1st and 2nd year don't have too many labs (except a handful of micro and heme labs in 2nd year)

As for a weekly schedule in first year, well it really does vary throughout the year. But as an overall, you tend to have some lectures in the morning (which are optional, they are all audio/video recorded...). Every Monday/Wednesday afternoon there is ICM (intro to clinical medicine) where one of the day you go to your assigned clinical location, and the other day is at the schools clinical skills center (where you learn and practice things such as the patient interview, physical, etc)

Scattered throughout your week you will also have the occasional case conference (like once every other week in the first year), and/or bioethics class (those are like only once a month) and/or epidemiology class (also like once a month)

So yea.. Sorry it's hard for me to really give a set schedule b/c it really changes a lot based on the year and time of year. But the first year isn't too jam packed, although the 2nd year starts to get a bit more intense, particularly the 2nd half of 2nd year.

Thanks for your help and guidance on SDN!
I was wondering if you know how much rent for a 2bd apartment is on campus. Thanks in advance!

Well you would be sharing it with another student so I think your share would be around 500$ per month

If you are in an apartment shared with 2 others then I think it's around 450$

(FYI rent is all inclusive - includes electric/heat/cable etc)

Well I would be moving in with my family so we would take on 3x$450 which is $1250? Am I right in this assumption? Is there a place I would be able to check these prices?

There's an online payment portal that I checked for you. I believe your rent would be 1288$ a month (that's for the largest size apartment)

I just re-read the financial aid website. Maybe I'm the only one who didn't see this the first time around or am too used to relying on reminders via e-mail, but the loan applications were due May 3, just FYI in case anyone else missed this. Hopefully this won't screw me over too much.

Ha I also saw this and started to worry so I called them. They said you don't have to apply for any loan yet, but you should complete the entrance counseling and MPN on the studentaid.gov website. She said you don't actually have to request any money until about a month or two from now - which makes sense because many people still are unsure of which school they will be attending.

What if an applicant, with multiple acceptances, were accepted by Einstein after May,15th... how much time can he or she hold on to the acceptances (Einstein + Medical School A)?

I heard that the standard timeframe is two weeks, but it may vary from school to school and with how late in the season we are.

For the MPN, which school do we enter? Einstein isn't listed anywhere.

I've only done the entrance counseling so far, but I listed Yeshiva University. I assumed that the Einstein financial aid folks will have access to anything sent to the parent institution.

Yeah, prior to May 15 (maybe it's March 30?), all schools are required to give applicants a 2 week window to respond. After May 15th, it's a scramble for schools to fill their class so they want you to choose quickly. Idk about Einstein, but I've heard Emory gives you 24 hours to decide

has anyone asked if official transcripts need to be sent from the school or if we could provide our own copy of the official transcript?

So I'm attempting to make summer plans that consist of flights. All I can find about orientation is last year's started Aug 12. Is it safe to assume ours will be the 11th? Are there any outings or programs before other than the biochemistry course?

When we get our assignment from housing--is it just for the apartment, or is for a specific room in the apartment?

also, does anyone see the deadline to apply for gradplus loans?

I called and spoke to Camille who was very helpful. I asked about the direct loans deadline, but she made it seem as though all loan applications are due May 16. You could call to confirm though.

Ok thank you. Does anyone know if it's OK to select Yeshiva University for entrance counseling? I don't see Albert Einstein.

Yes, I asked this as well.
Ok thanks. And when you get to the part where it asks you to estimate current expenses but just shows Yeshiva costs, is that what you put in to answer the question or were you somehow able to change this?

When she said May 16, did she mean the date you have to make an actual loan request with a money amount, or was she just talking about fafsa, CSS, tax returns, etc? Because if it's the former, that sounds awfully early to know how much expenses you're going to have and how much you should be taking out...

I would just call and talk to them. I don't want to steer you in the wrong direction. You can always borrow more after taking the initial amount out so it seems pretty flexible.

For those who received the service and research scholarship, did you get any kind of confirmation after submitting the acknowledgement form?

I went the other day to drop off my health forms, but really it was just an excuse to go give the campus a second look. The students there all seem super chilled out, the campus has some really beautiful areas, and I am now super psyched to start in August. Just thought this might give my future classmates here something to look forward to lol (although perhaps I was not so descriptive....) 🙂

No confirmation, just going on faith that they received it!

Is Einstein's network down? I can't seem to open any of Einstein's links.

Edit: Nevermind

I recieved a confirmation e-mail shortly after my submission (2-4 min). Check your junk-mail

Current students: the budget Einstein put together suggests $11, 350 for the year for "room," saying that rent/utilities is 900 a month. Did you find it necessary to take out that much when rent is only about 500 a month on campus?

I also have a question..
Do the applicants for the Research and Service Scholarship eventually find out that they have not received the award? Or are we sort of left in the limbo?

That's excessive - considering that for a single person, rent is like 450-500, you should only need to take out 6000$ for rent. I guess they are saying 900 to average it out for the varying types of students? Not sure.

Thanks for the input!

The lack of response makes me think 'limbo' is the answer..

Yeah I asked this to the admissions office and they said they only notify people in the event that they do receive the scholarship.
Well that isn't ideal. I would rather get a clear no than foster hope till tuition payment due date.
