2013-2014 Central Michigan University Application Thread

Hey everyone. I'm interviewing here in a few weeks but I haven't had a Multi Mini Interview set-up yet. Just wanted to get an idea from those who interviewed if the interview here is like what I've heard of other MMIs that its very scenario based and not much planning and talking about yourself occurs on interview day. Appreciate the help.

No need to study. Just be able to think and talk about your thought process.

I wonder how many people are on the waitlist and if the list has a preferred section. Do they randomly pick people?

May I ask why? Are you acce

May I ask why? And if you were accepted or waitlisted?[/quote]
Was accepted on the first day acceptances were released. Out of state tuition is just too high for a school that is unaccredited. I would maybe pay 72k for Johns Hopkins Ucsf etc. This was a back up school.

Ok, thanks, best of luck to you!

I hate to bring bad news but it looks like the class is almost full. "Applicant interviews are nearly complete, and 96 students have accepted the CMU College of Medicine's offer to be part of the second class." There are only 104 spots. Here's the article
http://media.cmich.edu/news/second-cmu-college-of-medicine-class-attracts-3-007-applicants
That does not take into consideration those students who paid the deposit and are still deciding if CMU is where they really will end up going. I am sure that there are a lot of students to paid the nominal fee and by now, do not intend to attend CMU but have not withdrawn there applications, leaving additional spots for those on the wait/hold lists.

CMU doesn't have a deposit. Acceptance doesn't mean matriculation. There will be waitlist movement for sure because I for sure am going to give up my acceptance once the paperwork is moving at the school that is number 1 for me

Exactly my point...there will be movement. The issue is how much movement there will be from those accepted; how many people are on the wait list; how many people will decline an offer if they are on the waitlist; and how many are on the hold list that might move up the ladder if enough accepted and waitlist students decline.

For those who have been accepted - has anyone received any information on scholarship applications yet?

Interviewed on Friday and really enjoyed the experience at the school. For those who also interviewed, they said we should hear back in late Feb /early Mar timeframe correct?

I interviewed here a little while back. At the time they said that the admin committee would meet today and start sending out acceptances/wait list notifications as soon as tomorrow. I have no idea if that information is still current, but I thought if anyone is anxiously waiting on this school they would like to know.

I just heard back a few minutes but found out I was put on hold (which according to email is a step below the waitlist). Does anyone on this thread know if applicants are straight up declined post-interview or is hold the worst news post interview? Any chance I could still get brought up to WL or accept at this point in the cycle?

Sorry to hear that -- I know it's disappointing! I don't believe I've seen anyone rejected post-interview, but that could just be because nobody posted it. There's always a chance for movement, though we will not be updated on our status until after May 15th. As I've mentioned a few times before, I was told that zero people were ultimately accepted from the "hold" pile last year (and even only a few from the top of the waitlist were accepted). However, with a much larger class this year, more movement is possible.

I'm just not too optimistic. 😉

The impression I had was that no one is flat out rejected, you either accepted, waitlisted, or put on hold. I was waitlisted, but they specifically said in my email that they expected strong movement. Strong enough to pull someone off hold? I don't know, but it's smart to stay optimistic. Good luck here or elsewhere.

Anyone deciding between CMED and MSU COM? Pros and cons to both and having trouble deciding.

I would be interested to hear your list of pros and cons. I will likely be at MSU-COM or an OOS MD school since I am on hold here 😉! This is my thought process, however:

CMED:
Beautiful new facilities.
Cheap rent, great grad housing available.
Small CMED student body.
Lots of personalized help from professors.
but...
Very new.
Mount Pleasant < East Lansing (in my opinion).
Match results = ?

MSU-COM
Great reputation (best osteopathic school by far).
Awesome match opportunities with their statewide system.
Decent location.
but...
Huge student body.
Old facilities.
OMM?
and I'm not going to get into a DO/MD discussion here.

Overall, I like them both. They both have a focus on primary care, and I think graduating from either one would make you a fine physician! The curriculum setup also seems quite different, so perhaps there might be one that fits your learning style better.

I would add that the issue of lack of being fully accredited might also weigh in your decision.

I basically want my best match options for residency. MSU COM has huge alumni network, sound curriculum, great city, respected reputation. Cons are older facilities, if want to go into specialty will DO create barrier, and no summer breaks for research/service work.

For CMED, it is fear of the unknown. New facilities and small town are given. But since it's newer will they put more effort than the average school to make sure their students will succeed on boards, or since so new will major unknown problems surface that create handicap for student's success. Will residency programs look down on newer school since reputation unknown of quality of students it produces.

Yeah, the same questions would go for WMed. Though I have little to back this up, I think both WMed and CMed will help their students be very successful. Will matches be better than MSU-COM? Unknown... but assuming you would ultimately get the same board scores, I think the MD from CMed might very possibly be more helpful for competitive MD residencies. Of course MSU-COM also has the best access of any DO school to competitive DO residencies. It would certainly be a tough choice for me... but if I was certain to want a competitive residency, I might go CMed.

Thanks for the information. So given that people on the waitlist aren't informed of their status until May 15, it is likely that I won't hear back until that time too given that I am on hold? Any idea when the committee reconvenes?

Can someone please explain second look day?

Second look day to get another chance to see CMED, ask any remaining questions, and get an overall better feel of what the school will be like because you will be with students who are going to be your classmates. I am attending to help give me a gut feeling between CMED and another school.

Ok, thank you, that's what I was thinking. I'm on their waiting list, so I won't be attending second look day obviously but I hope accepted students find their dream school, and that there's room for me too 🙂 best of luck to you.

I'm going crazy after second look day. Are people staying or leaving? I really want to be accepted off the waitlist, you don't have to convince me!

Hi SamanthaRae,

Did you get an invite to the second look day? I have been waitlisted since September and I didn't receive one.

Hello,

No, I didn't get an invite to second look day. It's only for accepted students so they can decide if they are going to go to CMED or not. It's frustrating that CMED has to bribe accepted students with free food and water bottles while there are people on the wait list who want in and don't need convincing, you know?

I'm sorry, that was rude of me to say. I am just frustrated and I want nothing more than to go to Central Michigan's medical school. I don't want to be anything but a doctor, and also don't want to be stuck at my current job for another year, spending ANOTHER 2000$ on applications to DO school. I will do it if I have to of course, I'm just letting off some steam.

Anyone else feeling a little crazy too?

I am feeling a bit crazy myself 😛 Hopefully just one more month!! 🙂

Can someone please explain this for me?

"CMU CMED requires a minimum overall MCAT score of 24. The average MCAT score of those accepted as of April 2014 was 29.

If students have multiple MCAT scores, CMED will use the set of scores with the highest overall score"

So does that mean they add up your highest subscores to make a composite score, or that they consider only your overall highest total score?

Example:
Test 1: 10/10/10 = 30.
Test 2: 9/12/11 = 32.
Would this be only considering test 2, or a highest subscore composite score of 10/12/11 = 33?

I believe they just consider the single highest test administration and do not superscore.

(Stated in the FAQ as "CMED will consider your highest MCAT score [if multiple tests are taken].")

OK thanks. The thing that threw me off was I would assume that "CMED will use the set of scores with the highest overall score" sounds different than "CMED will use the highest overall score". I assumed they added in 'set of scores' to signify a difference.

Yeah, definitely -at best- ambiguous with what you were quoting. I feel pretty confident they considrt the best single adminstration based on everything, though! Plus, schools that superscore are pretty uncommon.

Please keep in mind the information being quoted above is from another schools website (GVSU) and while the information is mostly accurate, there do seem to be some semantic issues that could lead to confusion. To clarify, CMED will use the highest MCAT score...not sub-scores across multiple tests, but your highest MCAT score from a single test. The average of 29 (actually 30) is simply an average, we have many students at or near the minimum of 24 and many students with scores well above the minimum. Please always use our official website med.cmich.edu for the most accurate information. Thank you.

I wonder how the wait list works. Are people randomly taken off the list and accepted? Is there a preferred section? How do you take students from the wait list and move them to accepted?

CMEDAdmissions, can you please explain to me how a person is chosen from the wait list? When CMED needs to fill spots on their acceptance list, do you look at waitlisted applicants' applications and interviews again? Or are we picked from the list randomly? Neither? Thank you.

NO, the Wait List is not random. There are many factors that are considered when we pull an applicant from the Wait List, mostly what you will have already submitted in your application materials. We do not keep a "ranked" list, so we are not able to let an applicant know where on the Wait List they are at any particular time. As we need applicants from the Wait List, we have a committee that will meet and discuss the applicants.

Ok, thank you! "Mostly what you will have already submitted". Mostly? So, should I send a letter of intent or a letter of interest that states that CMED is my first choice school?

Dear CMED,

My friend is waitlisted here. I was wondering is around May 15th the most likely time she will hear back?

Is anyone aware of any waitlist movement yet, or will it all start tomorrow? So nervous!

I was told we won’t know what type of movement we will have in our waitlist and hold pools until after [May 15]". 🙂

It's past May 15th...im running out of patience, but I emailed them and there IS waitlist movement and it may go on into the summer.

I withdrew from Central prior to the May 15th deadline. Really liked it, but decided to stay a little closer to home. I imagine the adcom will get together and review apps before making further offers to pull people off the waitlist, so hang tight all you! Good luck!

I also withdrew before the May 15th deadline. Loved the school but was too expensive for OOS tuition.

i got accepted off waitlist on may 15. Declined the offer over the weekend. I hope it goes to one of you guys 🙂
