2013-2014 Columbia University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi. Is anyone applying or familiar with the 3 year PhD to MD program? I have a couple of questions:

-How many students are accepted into the program?

-For the secondary prompt on discussing future expectations for research, is the committee looking for a fairly in-depth discussion of a research plan or more high level discussion?

Thanks in advance!

Hey there, not sure exactly what you're asking, but just generally-
The most common option is to live in the dorm for 1st year and then we get to apply for student apartments 2nd year. That way you can avoid the whole new York house hunting and commuting thing (plenty of people do decide to do that though!)
Oh, okay! That clears a lot up. Do you find the dorms and student apartments to be comfortable? I think I read somewhere that they were subsidized too...

Thank you so much!

has anyone received an "application complete" email? All my boxes are checked on the status tab but I haven't gotten an email (submitted secondary about 10 days ago)

I just submitted today and received a complete email immediately. Maybe check to see if you got it the same time as the submission confirmation email?

never got a complete email either.

under communications, does it list a 3rd email? I just have secondary invite + submission.. and all my other app materials are already in (and marked as received)

Yep, I've got a 3rd "complete" email listed literally 1 second after the submission one.

Thinking of applying with a 34 MCAT and mid-3.7s cGPA and sGPA. Worth it, or do I fall under the cut?

Certainly worth applying. Some of my classmates, including myself were accepted with a similar profile. That said, as important as those numbers are, Columbia really looks at the whole picture and your passion both for being a doc and for Columbia. Good luck!

The dorms are adequate but they definitely aren't as nice as the apartments on campus. They tend to run 650 to 750 a month last time I checked. Apartments are 850 to 1050

Hi guys! I'm an M1 just starting at P&S (first day of classes tomorrow!) and would be glad to help anyone out with any questions about the application process. A little about me - NYS resident, 3.5 GPA 35 MCAT, Ivy League undergrad, and I live off campus with my boyfriend and my dog. Feel free to comment or message me any questions!

Haha yep took me a while to figure that one out as well. I still say "two" in my head when I see it even though I know it means interview invite 🙂

 I was so excited when I got a II somewhere that when I told my friend about it, I said, "I got a TWO from X university!" The funny part is he is also pre-med and reads SDN so he knew what I meant.

Hey, you are my background and stat twin! Can I ask when you had all your apps submitted last year? I finished up early August. but jeez, so many 37s and above this year, worried IIs will be taken long before they get to mine.

When did you guys get complete emails? I submitted my secondary before verification, received the confirmation email saying that it was submitted and I would get a complete email later. Now it's 1.5+ weeks after verification, all green checks on my status page, but no indication of 'completeness'. Thanks!

I received my submitted and complete emails within minutes of each other. It's probably worth a call to the admissions office.

I really like my dorm! Very spacious. It's $8000 for academic year. There might be help with it in some cases thru finaid or something though not sure....

What if you have to stay for the summer to do research or something? Can you still stay in your dorm? Do you have to pay something extra?
(not that I have a high chance of getting accepted to Columbia, just curious)

Hey mmmcdowe, or any other med student at columbia - do you find from your class makeup that undergrad prestige is a important factor in admissions at columbia?

sincerely, non-prestigous undergrad

" If you have graduated from college, please briefly summarize what you have done in the interim.Words Remaining:300" Does this have to be answered in essay form? Can we just list the activities and briefly describe each activity. I'm having alot of trouble trying to meet the word restrictions while keeping this in essay form.

Yeah. You can definitely stay over summer but you would have to pay extra for it again unless there is some extra deal involved. 🙂

No! There are a lot of ivy folks but there are plenty of non-ivies such as myself 😀

Anyone know what the point of "Experiences" are in the secondary application given we already did this in the AMCAS?

I think it's just so that the admission committee can get a generalized picture of all your experiences, kinda like a summary.

Yeah I would say just try to give a nice at-a-glance for your interviewer/committee etc. so they don't have to sift through the whole amcas... Plus you can include anything you've done since submitting amcas?

Also received an interview invitation. Super excited, but bummed I already bought my plane tickets yesterday. They have a $400 charge to change them and now I need to be in NYC A day early. Columbia's worth it though!

LizzyM score is a 78 I think. Maybe 77. Avg GPA but high MCAT.
Complete July 9.
Uploaded an in the area email early August.

If you guys don't mind sharing, when are the interview dates?

Oh my goodness Interview Invite 🙂 🙂. Complete 7-8

Damn, nice!! Are you gonna try and go to all your interviews? As another CA applicant, I can't imagine paying for that many cross-country plane tickets. A nice problem to have though, I suppose 😛

Congrats!

Congratulations, guys. When were you complete?

I was complete on 7/29.

For people with IIs, did you guys try to fill out the lunch info form in the confirmation email? I tried to fill it out, but I notice that none of the September interview dates were listed...

I guess your name means the total number of interview invites you'll be getting 😀 congrats on all your success.

Columbia is like my super duper mega ultra hyper pie in the sky dream/reach school. I get my MCAT score on Tuesday which will determine if its worth going for.

Does anyone know if Columbia has switched to MMI or if it is still traditional?

we only switched to digital applications only a year or so ago, i doubt mmi will make it here... ever

Fifteen interview invites!! Geez, bro. Such a baller, aha. Congratulations though and good luck! :luck:

You, my sir, are winning the medical school application process

@milkandcereal Yeah...at this point I'm probably going to go ahead and withdraw from some of them. Like you said, those flights are killer and I'd happily open up the space for additional applicants. I am managing to squeeze a ridiculous number of interviews into a single round-trip flight, though, so hopefully that works out/I don't burn out!

Anyways, thank you all so very much for the support! I am incredibly grateful and honestly stunned by the success I've had thus far. I really hope to meet some of you in person along the way! I know lots of good news is in store for all of you! 🙂 🙂

I am having the same problem...

Also, for those who asked, I got an II and was complete 7/29. LizzyM score of 75+ (average GPA, high MCAT).
