2013-2014 Columbia University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think they said April 4th. Correct me if anyone remembers differently.
Thanks JB, congrats on the NYU acceptance too! Hopefully someone else can confirm? If not, I will call the office and let everyone know in the next few days.

when you guys sent updates did the email say your file was still in active review?

Mine did.
I interviewed in September, maybe that's why? When did you interview?

(In all likelihood it means nothing and we are just overanalyzing)

Oh sorry, it was a pre-interview update.

I'm a first-year at P&S and just want to confirm that Can'tShakeThis is absolutely right that revisit is on April 4. Hope to see many of you here then!
Thank you! Is it just 4/4 or is it 4/3-4/4 or 4/4-4/5 or anything like that?

I'm counting down the days too! (Although I know there's a slim chance, and I shouldn't get my hopes up)

Exactly!! I cant help but get my hopes up even though I know its bad... I sorta want to send an update letter/letter of interest but I dont have much to update on. I think I'm going to wait and send one if I get waitlisted?

Appletini. Love it. Scrubs reference?

Haha yes indeedy!

any current students know?

About revisit, I believe events will only be scheduled for the 4th. It should be a great time! Last year, P&S provided lodging and most meals. I would anticipate something similar this year, although I'm not certain. Sorry not to be more of use!

Longest wait of my life. Does anyone know what date decisions come out from previous threads or something?
Based on previous threads, the first acceptances seem to often come out the evening of 2/28.

Tell me about it...hopefully this year they also start making those calls around 2/28 this year so I can just know either way!

I was just scrolling through last years thread and I can't believe how stressful the decision process sounds! Calls over the course of 2 days and MAILED acceptances? Damn, Columbia!

They posted the first round of acceptances online on March 1st! (some people got calls the day before too)

Columbia was the first US medical school to offer the md degree*, but there were a couple med schools in existance prior
*Contested by Penn, take my tour and Ill tell you why.
Doesn't matter since both were founded by Edinburgh grads hah 😛

Should we still send an update or LOI if there isn't anything significant to add?

Has anyone successfully sent a thank you note? I can't figure out how to send one from the Status tab and communications function or whatever. Are we supposed to submit it as an 'application update?'

Probably wont help at all unless you did something that was really different from what your application already says. Its P&S, they know you want to come. From my lurking on other threads, many adcom members(LizzyM, Goro, gyngyn) have said they dont believe them or something haha

I would send an LOI if you haven't done so already. Just follow the basic rules for any LOI and you should be fine.

I uploaded mine as an "Application Update". It did not appear in my "Communications" tab after I did so, but I got confirmation a couple of days later that it was received.

Cheers!

I believe you should at least have sent one though, especially if you're like me and have graduated already. They asked for an essay on what your plans are, so I think it's good to show them that you have followed up on them.

Hey Dingo Mango,

Do they update our application portal on March 1? Columbia is my first choice, can't wait to hear back!

Edit: Nvm, found the answer on last years thread! For anyone else interested, seems that they updated everyone's online portal on the evening of March 1st.

Has anyone heard about acceptances to the Columbia-Bassett program?

Yes! I was accepted the day before Christmas, couldn't be more excited! I believe they said they were accepting 4-5 people that round, and then another 5 around now?

Also, question for current students. They mentioned during my visit that the majority of first year students live in Bard Hall (up to 80%?). I imagine that a lot of the social scene therefore revolves around Bard Hall - my question is, to what extent is this the case? Are students living off-campus at a significant disadvantage, or is it not an issue so long as they put an effort in?

I can't imagine I'd live far away if I were off-campus, but I know from college that a lot of the social interactions were off-the-cuff, and that people living off-campus really couldn't participate in the social life of campus in the same way. Wondering if that's the case here as well, or if things are a little different in med school. Thanks!

As far as I know from my interview day all the students I spoke to that lived off campus only lived within a 10 block radius (so not far at all) and they enjoyed living off campus anyway so they weren't really all about the social scene (they either lived alone or with boyfriends/girlfriends). Probably not a big deal if you live off campus but if you want to be social why not live in Bard?

Yeah I imagine I'd live within a few blocks as well - I'm the roll-out-of-bed-and-run-to-class type. My primary reason for living off campus would be to live with my girlfriend, though the extra space/kitchen/etc. wouldn't hurt either. I haven't been out of college long enough that I couldn't live in a dorm, but I just as soon wouldn't if there aren't major advantages...that said, I'm also a group-studier, and I want to be involved in the extracurricular life of my class, so I wouldn't want to handicap myself by living off campus if that makes it a lot more difficult to make friends/attend events/be involved in general.

Coffeehouse 4/3 at 8pm so people might want to check that out!
Good call Dingo! Coffeehouse is wonderful and one of the highlights of every month! If you want to get a sense of the culture at P&S (and have a blast while doing so!), I would strongly encourage you to try to attend.

It's a good question. Admittedly, I live in Bard Hall, so my perspective might not be what you're looking for, but here are my two cents anyway. You're right that the majority of first-year students do live in Bard Hall, but many live elsewhere for any number of reasons. As far as I can tell, they are as engaged with student life here as anyone. Bard is great as a centralized location for organizing our community, but it's always open to everyone in the class. Also, we spend so much time interacting with each other outside of living accommodations (in lectures, in clubs, in clinics, in small groups, in the library, in the gym, etc.) that it's virtually impossible not to know everybody and be a part of things.

You're also right in that many people opt to stay nearby, but a chunk of students live 50+ blocks away and they seem to enjoy broadening their NYC experiences. The A train makes all of the west side pretty feasible for living. I think that the farther away you live, the more proactive you might have to be. But the bottom line is that, in my experience, the community here is extraordinarily inclusive and welcoming to everyone. If you want to be involved (no matter where you live or, even, what you're interested in), you will be. Come to Coffeehouse to see what I'm talking about!

Hope that somewhat addressed your question and my apologies for rambling!
