2013-2014 Florida Atlantic University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
3.86 cGPA and BCPM GPA. Took MCAT last year and had a 26R (9/8/9). Retook this year and got a 33 (11/10/12). Pretty good ECs and LORs. IS.

Interview day began with a general info session about the school, have breakfast before coming because they only offered coffee/water in the morning. Also, if you are a FL resident, remember to bring in their required documentation. After the info session we went on a tour--very cool, got to see the simulation center in action! Afterwards you return to the same conference room for lunch with the med students.

After lunch you split up to have two one-on-one 30-min interviews. The first one is a conversational, traditional interview. Second one is a bit trickier, they call it "behavioral" and they asked me a lot of ethical questions. What shocked me the most was how my interviewer tried to pressure me into changing my response for one, but I stuck with it (respectfully). It was definitely an odd interview and from what I hear from other students, no one leaves the second one feeling 100%. The key is to just be yourself and answer truthfully!

Following the interviews you meet up with medical students to finish touring the actual medical campus building and then receive a financial aid info session. Overall pretty long day, but wonderful school! Wish you the best of luck and let me know if you have any more questions 🙂

Congrats!!! I thought the traditional was much worse than the behavioral, that's the one I'm nervous about
🙁

Three weeks can't come any sooner!

You can do it!!! 🙂
For the traditional, they just mainly inquired more about the several essays/activities on my AMCAS and supplemental application so it'd be wise to review what you discussed prior to the actual interview 🙂

I felt more pressure during my traditional interview and came out feeling pretty bad about it, but I remember that I stuck with my gut on every question and didn't let the interviewer sway me in any way. In the behavioral one I felt much more comfortable and was really able to open up about my experiences and how they have shaped me into a future physician.

For all i knew the traditional was the behavioral and they just switched it up on me, but I think its more about who you are interviewing with and being confident about everything you have written in your AMCAS.

(accepted on 10/18 btw)

So im oos and am interviewing soon. I have a passport and drivers license but no voter registration card. Am i in trouble?

I used my high school diploma, but I'm in IS. Call Agnes and see what else you could use.

Withdrawing my application - accepted to a higher choice. Best of luck everyone!

How long did you guys stay in "Review in Progress" for? My status changed at 1:00am yesterday (weird). I'm hoping to grab an interview from here soon..

My status changed 1-2 weeks ago to "review in progress", but I haven't heard anything since then. Under "last status date" it just lists the date I was complete.

Same here (in regards to the last status date). I know they are VERY busy but I hope they will get to ours soon. 🙁 I submitted my FIU secondary the same day and I got the interview invite from them on Friday.

I'm pretty sure that they'll get to them. I was complete mid-August, which leaves plenty of time, even for one of the last II, assuming I get an II. IIRC, they only interview until January at FAU, so there is a little more pressure for them, although they have a fairly small class size.
I was complete at FIU a few days later, and my preliminary review was completed last week, but I have not heard anything from them yet.

Are you sure about them interviewing till January? I don't think that's an accurate statement. They interviewed well into March last year. Did they change something this year?

You're right. They interview until April. I could have sworn that I read January before. Sorry for the confusion.

Just got an II! I'm in kentucky, what's the cheapest way to fly in and what's an economic option for hotel?

II today at noon! Booked an interview for early December. Would it be a bad idea to send an email asking for an earlier interview date if someone cancels?

Completed 10/15, Under review 10/27, Preliminary Review Completed 10/28

Apparently something strange is going on with the football coach, any current students want to comment?

OOS from IL - II for 11/12. Super excited😀! Any stats somewhere about how many OOS they interview?

Congrats!

Not sure about how many OOS they interview. But I remember that they said they expect to interview ~300 students out of a pool of ~3600 or so.

Status changed from "Review in progress" to "Preliminary review in progress" yesterday, 11/10. Status changed from "Preliminary review in progress" to "Preliminary review complete" today, 11/11. If the previous patterns are any indication, I'll have an interview invitation tomorrow. I'll let everyone know!

When did you submit ? I submitted 9/27 and I am still "Review in progress" 🙁

Alright... so it was two days after "Preliminary Review Completed"... II today at 10:36! I'm stoked! 3.81, 35, OOS.

Alternate List =/. Are they still doing the accepted alternate?

Waitlisted, interviewed late last month. Not too surprised considering how one of the interviews went. Good luck to every else!

II this week. Complete 9/8, at the same time as FIU, and I've already interviewed at FIU AND been accepted.

I interviewed here yesterday and really loved it - small classes, integrated curriculum, early patient contact... And they showed us a run through with Harvey in the sim center! Most other schools just point him out but it was nice to see him in action. Can't wait to hear back!

II today! Scheduled for 1/13. Excited to have an invite here as well as a few other II, but doubt I can make it to all of them. If I withdraw my interview I hope one of you fine folks gets it. Good luck everyone!

submitted the secondary app 10/22, received an II 11/6, interviewing tomorrow 11/22 - it all happened so quickly!

Thanks! I'm IS and matriculating from FAU so I imagine that may have helped the process along
Same here! (Haha) I also got my II a week after my submission so you may be right! I know some people who got an II and got a date a week later because some people call to cancel their interview which opens the slot up. Nonetheless, rock that interview.

(I'm actually curious if we actually know each other in real life o.o)

Does anyone know if the behavioral interview is a scenario type thing like an MMI station?

+1! OOS so arriving 1/10 or 1/11. Good luck!

the behavioral interview is much like the traditional interview, with an ethics question or two tossed in. relatively easy (at least in my experience) and I came out of both interviews feeling pretty confident.

I am rescinding my interview spot for Monday, I hope that it goes to someone on this thread!!

Had my interview here yesterday and it was very pleasant! Both my interviewers were super friendly. They both had my file ready and asked really personalized questions which I liked. Hoping to hear good news on December 18th! 🙂
