2013-2014 Florida Atlantic University Application Thread

Isn't there an admissions committee meeting on Feb 20th? Does anyone know if this is for all applicants interviewing prior to that date?

Just a heads up, they are wrapping up interview invites by the end of February at most, if not sooner. I found out by calling admissions today. Final interview date is March 11 I believe, or somewhere around there.

Good luck!

Damn. I can't believe I still haven't gotten a single IS interview invite. If Florida is gonna do me like this, if I have to leave, I'll never come back, lol. I am getting bitter about this.

I believe USF and UM have long interview cycles so all hope isn't lost yet! And theres still a few weeks before FAU wraps up interviews.

II today..available dates were march 3, 7 , and one day the following week ( i want to say 14)

just got an email saying I'm accepted pending open seats and that I'm on the alternate list? am I accepted or waitlisted very confused ? anyone else get this email ?

Sounds like waitlist to me. I was told the exact same thing at another school about being "accepted" pending an open seat. That school called it waitlist, not alternate.

In other words, they'd like to accept you but their class is full. Once accepted students begin declining FAU and accepting alternatives, you'll be given the opportunity to officially be accepted as the class opens up.

I got that same email. "Placed at top of alternate list" "accepted pending an open seat"

I was very confused by it as well. It's definitely a waitlist. On the website it says, "the alternate list is ranked by the committee and applicants at the top of the list will be offered an acceptance before students lower on the list." So there is that and I believe the dean told us that like 60% of the class comes off the waitlist but it means more waiting and for those of you who are in the same boat as I am I really cannot take more waiting.

I'm going to call the office tomorrow to get more details.

this is the definition of a waitlist. How many people on the alternate list were not accepted last year or the year before that? How many people are on this alternate list currently?

Oh man, I was wait listed early on (November). Now I'm nervous.

Ok I looked into it further by way of reading last year's thread. It sounds like there is an "accepted alternate" and just regular alternate list. The accepted one means that they want to accept us but the class is full so we need to sit tight. Apparently the letter we are waiting to receive will go into this differentiation a bit.

As usual, the threads needs to be taken with a grain of salt. However, considering what the email said, what Mrs. Montfort said about a lot of people coming off the waitlist, and what I've read about other students' experiences, I'm pretty confident that the email some of us got today saying "you are accepted pending a spot" means we have a very good shot at getting in. So let's all pray that some of the accepted folks get acceptances at school they prefer so we can officially be part of the class of 2018!

i guess thats a big downside to interviewing this late at a school with such a small class. They're full already. I don't interview til March

Yeah interviewing late definitely puts you at a disadvantage. I called them today and they told me if I had interviewed earlier I would have been accepted. But the alternate list is ranked so if they really like you, you can end up at the top and bump everyone else down. So don't be too discouraged. Enjoy interview day. It's very laid back.

This is good info. Anyone know what percentage of last year's accepted alternate list was officially accepted though? Did FAU pull from their regular alternate list? If so, does that mean all of the accepted alternates got in?

It's definitely not bad news.

Well I'm not sure how statistically accurate a two year history is but I think it was 50 to 60% of the class off the waitlist in the past two years.

Also, what makes me feel better is that I know a lot of people already accepted are holding multiple acceptances at higher ranked schools.

That being said I loved fau and I know others did too so who knows who will and who won't drop their acceptance. It really depends with such a small class.

My impression is that most on the accepted alternate list get a spot and perhaps even some from the regular waitlist may if a lot of people drop or if they don't like remaining interviewees.

The office told me a lot of people start to drop in April so hopefully we'll know by then if not it'll be around may 15. So more waiting! Ugh!

As you can tell I am really banking on getting in here so those of you accepted who are seriously not considering going please relinquish your acceptances so we have a shot! My sincere thanks!!

So that's around 32 students on the alternate list that take the acceptance - hopefully the accepted alternate list is not 10x longer than that - I wonder if FAU gives out this "accepted alternate" status to everyone they could even conceivably admit? I'd rather they be honest with me and just tell me my rank on the list I can plan for the future. I'm just so nervous that I'm at the bottom of the "accepted alternate list" so that it doesn't even mean anything and it's just like being on a regular waitlist.

Hang in there mossyfiber. I know exactly how you feel and I'm right there in the same boat. We just need to be patient. We'll most likely get what we want. In the meantime, watch some bad TV or something and pass the time. You can plan for the future in June when you have all the facts. Nothing to be done as of yet...

I'm in the same boat as well (although hopefully there's not TOO many of us!)

Are y'all IS or OOS? I'm OOS. I assume that the alternate list is divided IS/OOS as they wouldn't replace an IS applicant with an OOS one (and probably vice versa).

As many of us are waiting as accepted but pending open seats, I request the fortunate ones holding multiple med school admissions, please please select your school so others have a chance- time is key, pls don't wait till may 15

Yes I second Medrok!

Please tell FAU you're not going if you plan on going somewhere else... We have all been working so hard for this and time is the biggest determining factor at this point.

I am out of state. I didn't really think about the fact that they might have to divide the wait lists. I think all the speculating might just be hurting our brains. There is no real way of knowing how they go about the process. The best we can do is wait and not stress out (hah so much easier said than done!)

I doubt you'll see any movement until at least late April when most schools send out financial aid packages. Most are holding out on multiple acceptances to compare options. Best to so is just wait until May 15 as I doubt anyone is letting go of their seat any before then.

Withdrew my acceptance. Good luck to everyone!

Has anyone in our group (Chemster/Medrok/MossyFiber/boogers et al) actually received the "acceptance letter"? The e-mail said it would come a few days after the decision e-mail, but I haven't heard anything since.

They didn't mail it until this Wed.

Edit: I just got it today. There's nothing in it except for two pieces of paper - the print version of the accepted alternate email and another paper stating the contingencies for acceptance - e.g. transcripts by June 1st, bachelor's degree or higher completed, etc. Not the warmest of schools IMO.

Oh, they also give you the url for https://medadmissions.fau.edu/admitted/, a site where the majority of links do not work and which links to their "new medical student forum" https://www.facebook.com/fau.medicine

I haven't gotten my letter yet either.

I called the office last Tuesday and they said they were sending the letters out Wednesday (2/26). I thought it would have arrived by now.

Let me know when you guys get yours.

I might call them on Thursday if it hasn't arrived by them. I feel bad that I keep bugging them though...

Really - the letter doesn't matter as long as you confirm your acceptance of their waitlist (they take email confirmations).

Ok thanks for letting me know I will send them a email then. Worst thing that could happen right now would be for them to give up my spot!

Anyone have a rough idea of how big the accepted alternate group is? Email makes it sound like this it's an informal acceptance but it seems like a lot of people have gotten the AA.

This is exactly what I think. The school isn't allowed to overaccept and the class size is 64. Other schools that overaccept do so by about 2-3 times the class size (I think).

Therefore, since we are coming to the end of the cycle, we can probably guess that there are 64-128 accepted alternates (split into two groups and each group ranked). Last year, 53/65 students were in state - approx. 83% in state, 17% out of state. So we can probably guess that there are approx. 53-106 Florida accepted alternates and 10-22 OOS accepted alternates. Hopefully my math's not too far off.

I feel pretty bad for whoever's potentially #106 on this ranked "accepted alternate list" - it's definitely more like a regular waitlist at that point and FAU's "informal acceptance" wording would give them a lot of false hope.

One more thing that I just thought of - if the alternate list is ranked, and an applicant is on the bottom of the list, does it mean that they will be continuously bumped down as new applicants that are high ranked are added? e.g. rank 10 / cohort of 10, then another 10 students who are better are accepted, so now you're ranked 20/20?

from what I understand, yes

So I am officially exclusively on wait lists and have yet to get in anywhere.

I think that you guys are right. A lot of people have gotten that same alternate list email and you must get bumped down if it is ranked.

With everything that this process has entailed for me, I am officially no longer optimistic. At this point I think it is easier to accept defeat than to continue waiting hopefully.

Congrats to everyone who got in this year. Those of you still waiting, I sincerely feel for you. And for everyone on the alternate lists I hope that you have also gotten acceptances because this is truly awful.
