2013-2014 Florida State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
UF and USF also have a very, very, very strong IS bias.
I did not get that impression from my interactions with USF medical students. For the past 2 years, the class has been ~21% OOS, which is much more than FSU. Also, as mentioned above, the SELECT program is popular among OOS applicants. In general, if an OOS applicant was to apply to a state school in Florida, they would have much better chances at USF than at FSU.

I can't speak about UF because I know nothing of the program, nor did I apply/interview there.

Can anyone explain the 2 weeks to accept the acceptance? I thought everyone had until April to choose where to attend?

A lot of places require you to accept their acceptance/pay a deposit/etc within a time frame in order to hold your seat for the incoming class. You can then do this many times over for all of your acceptances and hold multiples seats until the spring when you have to narrow it down to one school... Hope that helps.

And on another note I was just accepted here today!!! Interviewed 11/18 & First of the cycle!! 😀

Depends where you're staying. You could probably cab it. I never used public transportation while in tally....

Any of those who have recently received II's...do you mind saying when your secondary was complete and under review??

I received my interview last week and I was complete mid November. So I waited about a month! Hope this helps!

First IS acceptance! :heckyeah:
Complete early august I think, and interviewed a couple weeks ago. Don't know when I was under review. Best of luck!!

Does anyone know where FSU med students mainly live? With the undergrad school right next to the COM, I feel that it would stink to live next to a bunch of party undergrads. Anyone heard?

People live all over really. Some live right by campus. Those places are more expensive and not as nice. Noise might be an issue too. Then quite a few live around the city. Some down the appalachee parkway side. Some more on the other sides of campus. You will get more for your money the further you are away. Tallahassee traffic can be rough and parking of course is an issue so those are things you have to weigh. With video lectures you probably don't have to make as many trips to campus as you otherwise would.

I am not a med student but I went to FSU and know people who are. If I was to attend fsu I would probably live a little bit away in a house where I get more for my money/a bit more peace. I am a bit older (26) and will be living with my girlfriend and dog so my personal situation might make a difference.

I've kinda done it all, and theirs benefits to it all. First year of undergrad, "private dorm" right off campus. Second year apartment in the ghetto. Third and fourth year townhouse about 15 mins from campus that was pretty nice and affordable. First two years of med school I lived in the "student ghetto" right by the stadium.

I liked living about 15 mins away from campus. I had a nice townhouse where I split rent with two other guys paying about 350-400 each. That's probably the most bang for your buck. It was safe, easy to commute and I felt like I actually left school.

I also really liked living right by the stadium in the "student ghetto." I split a big house with a bunch of guys (not med students). Sure, there were nights were I was woken up by my drunken neighbors parties; but it was great being able to walk to class. I had a couple friends that lived within a couple blocks that really liked it.

Given the rental situation in Tally, I'd probably either stay close to campus and get a house, or go about 15-20 mins away and get a house or townhouse. I'd stay away from big apartments in Tally, their pretty overpriced and you're a lot more likely to run into an upstairs neighbor that listens to music at 2AM every night, parking problems and annoying landlords. If you stay near campus, look just west of campus (by the med school) or southwest. North of campus gets sketchy, as does directly south. If you get further out, Midtown is nice, down appalachee is fine as is northwest of town down Tharpe.

Truth here.

The big apartments in Tally will do everything they can to screw you. So stay away from them.

I have an interview creepy up on me. Everyone willinging to share a few tips and/ or suggestions?
On top of what TimesNewRoman said, just treat the interview as a conversation, because it really is. The Affordable Care Act came up in one of my interviews, but I think the questions are interviewer specific (like most schools).Other than that, questions are just about yourself (at least for me it was). Gook luck

Three simple steps:
1. Forget what you actually want to do.
2. You now want to be a family medicine doc treating old people in a rural area (OF COURSE you will do house calls).
3. Win.

Good luck!

My interview is over. And omg I am in love with FSU COM. Hopefully i get accepted but, I know this late in the game my chances are low.

Will it say at all in the application portal if you have been declined? Or do they only send out email or letter rejections? And are they still giving out interviews?

Reflecting back on my intetview and I am realizing my mistakes, aww. Nothing I can do now, it is in the hands of God.

Just sent an update email containing academics, work experience and shadowing from winter break. Have been under review since 9/9.

I was interviewed and waitlisted for the past two years. Now that I've done everything they told me to do to be more competitive (post-bacc program with high grades and raise MCAT score), I've been under review since 10/1. I just don't get it. I'm still hoping that they'll get to me... 🙁

I've been under review for awhile also.... does anybody know when the end of the interview season is? Seems it has been very quiet.

Not sure when the end of the interview season is...but I can tell you the interview groups are very small. There was only 7 or 8 interviewees when I went. Another thing, when I was invited for the II, there were openings that following week. Meaning you can get a call tomorrow for an interview next week, so there's still plenty of time. Just sit tight!

I appreciate your positive response.... the waiting is brutal!

Congratulations thisisansley and maybemed2013!!!! Huge accomplishment! Make sure to join our class Facebook page....search "fsu college of medicine - class of 2018"

I have a 3.65 GPA and 32 MCAT and haven't received and interview invitation. What does everyone who has been accepted think, do I have similar stats or do you think I'll get an interview?

Well I just had an interview not too long ago, but haven't heard back yet. I know FSU pretty well and your GPA/MCAT sound great! FSU really looks at your ECs. Not so much research (but it's awesome if you have gotten some experience) but more of your exposure to medicine and patient contact as well as service/involvement. If some of your ECs involve primary care or maybe a rural community that is definitely a plus! Sorry this is so long 😛 I love FSU and it's definitely a wonderful med school. Scores get your foot in the door but your ECs and the communities you served are definitely a crucial component. Hope this helps!! Good luck!

I interviewed on Monday (1/27) and was wondering how long it took to hear back about waitlist/acceptance.
Thank you

It took a week and a half for me. I interviewed on a Monday, heard back the following Wednesday.

Does anyone know when their interview season ends and how many spots are left?

just got put 'on hold' 🙁 does that mean i'm waitlisted??
I think so- it basically means they haven't made a final decision; so same thing as a wait-listed status except not so formally. IDK if they internally rank or what not. GL!! I hope you get in!

Thanks me too I really liked FSU and it's so close to home for me 🙁

I was also placed on hold for FSU back in October. If I had to guess, there's probably no movement until the end. Someone else can correct me here if I'm wrong.

My stats are slightly higher than yours and I've heard from basically every school I applied to except for FSU. It's odd to me because I think I'm a pretty good fit for FSU so this has led me to believe that FSU might be trying to stray away from applicants they feel will go to a school with higher averages. I may be wrong, but if I am right, and this is a school you are really serious about attending, I think you should consider writing to them and letting them know how you feel! I don't think it would hurt 🙂

we'll at least we're in it together

I'm sure someone has answered this on here before, but does anyone know based on past years how far into the year interviews are offered? Thanks for any replies!

From this year's 'application complete' email: FSU will be conducting interviews every Monday and Friday through the end of April.
