2013-2014 Loyola University (Stritch) Application Thread

Signed up for second look day; so excited! A good friend who's at Loyola told me lots of people bring their families to SL, so I invited my parents to come (we can bring 3 guests) and they are very excited now too.

Can't wait to meet potential future classmates. 🙂

See you there! I just booked my flight this morning- so excited! 🙂

Awesome! Hoping for good weather...Chicago weather can be so unpredictable, lol. Up until yesterday & today, the weather was acting like it was still Jan (re: very cold & lots of snow). As it is, we are getting snow tonight. :/ (even though it's 52 right now)

April weather should be better (likely 50s, 60s if we're lucky)...although we'll probably be inside the whole time so it really doesn't matter too much haha.

Cool, I was thinking about bringing my future step-children (they're teenagers), but Im concerned the MS1-initiated activities may not be kid-friendly...

Because it's only a day event (not a weekend) and from hearing about how many accepted students bring their parents, it sounds very family-friendly. I doubt there'll be any inappropriate activities for teenagers...unless you're talking about possible bar trips in the evening?

Edit: From what my friend told me, the activities are something like this: lectures/discussions on fin aid/housing/classes/etc, tours, lunch, and an ice cream social at the end of the day.

Thanks for the info! Really helpful!

love me a good ice cream social. I'll be bringing my wife. Super stoked to get another look with hopefully a little more objective/less tense experience.

So I know they are meeting tomorrow, March 17th. Will decisions come out via phone call?

Some people get phone calls and letters, some just get letters. I don't know how they choose who gets what.

My thoughts are that good news comes in a call and bad news in a letter... so that makes this one of the longest days of my life. I think instead of going to work I should spend the day staring at my phone.

Soooo today is the 17th....I'm a nervous wreck!!! Hurry up and call me! haha 😛

For everyone lucky enough to get a call tonight, please remember to post the time (include time zone) so we know when they start. Thank you 🙂

Seriously?! no one?!
We have all been wait listed haven't we? -______________-

JUST GOT THE CALL ABOUT 10 MINUTES AGO! Super Excited! It's 8:00 PM EST! The 2nd look day is April 11th! Woo Hoo! Looking forward to meeting all of my future Loyolans!

Got the call about an hour ago!! I'm very excited! Whose going to second look? It's April 11th!
I'll be there!! Am attempting to reach the parents/family now so they can come haha. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE ELSE! I know how the anxiety feels but there is definitely more calls to come from what I've read!

I didn't hear my phone ring in time so I was left with a voicemail. I listened to it and Dean Jones mentioned that second look was April 11th and if I needed help they would help me. Is this implying that they might cover flight costs?

How was everyones general thoughts about their visit to Loyola? Does anyone know the schedule for the second look? Thanks!

Hi Medicalhopeful congrats on your acceptance! At your interview were you told you would receive a call or letter in the mail? We were told a letter but it seems like most people get calls. Losing hope :/

Hey kd4383 I believe there are two different faculty members, one whom prefers to call the accepted medical students and one whom prefers to send letters/not call. From what I've read, there have been a lot of students who never got a call but did receive a letter in the mail 4 or 5 days after they were told they'd be notified so I wouldn't lose hope quite yet.
Looking back on the thread, the latest a student was notified of being accepted was 1 week after she was initially told she'd be notified and it was via letter (mail).

Thank you bmmedbound this is great information. I wont get my hopes up too high but this is definitely good to hear.

Does anyone know if wait listed applicants are invited to second look in April?

Is anyone looking for a roomie for the fall?!
I'll be a first year, completely new to the area and will need roommate(s).
Holla!

FINALLY! A rejection! haha, pre-ii. Kinda figured at this point. Good luck, all!

I aggiea1! I'll be a first year this coming year as well. WE actually have a Facebook page (I'll link below), all you have to do is request the admins. The second years have posted a roommate survey on there, and it seems to be the way a lot of people connect. Thought you might find it helpful 🙂

Hello there and congratulations to all those with acceptances! I am currently deciding between Loyola and BU (so thankful for acceptances!) and am having such a hard time!!! One of the issues that I keep thinking about are location and the fact that Loyola isn't pass/fail but otherwise I absolutely LOVED Loyola and really felt at home there. I was wondering if any current students could give me some info about what they think about their experiences at Loyola or what they think are some of the strongest/weakest points. Thanks and good luck to everyone!

Have a lot of people matched up as roommates already?? I haven't joined the facebook group yet, mostly because I want to meet people face to face at second look first (before being inundated with facebook friend requests)...but I don't want to miss out on potential roommates, either.

I agree with you on this. I've just requested to join the group now and have registered for 2nd look but don't want to miss out on good opportunities to find some good roommates either

Hey aggiea1 I am haha! I'm not familiar with the area either but from what I've heard a lot of students reside in forest park and oak par which are nearby areas. I don't know what type of housing it is (town homes/houses/apartments/etc.) so I'm hoping we get a lot more information about all of this on 2nd look day!

That makes me feel better (that not everyone who's been accepted is on the group & pairing up yet).

Let me know how things are; I might join sooner then.

Yep. I currently live/work around Loyola's area and Oak Park and Forrest Park are definitely the most popular (and probably safer/safest) of the neighborhoods from what I've heard/know of. Oak Park's even got a bunch of apartments up for rent right now, and probably even more in the summer. If you're looking at houses, Brookfield/La Grange/the other southern suburbs (south from Loyola, anyway) would work better. I think the best bet of the area is apartments, though.

I'm sure they'll give more info on second look day, though.

*Forest park, excuse my spelling.

Hi cyaneidae, I had the same concern about joining the fb group, but I have noticed it's a pretty chill group of people, thus it looks like everyone is waiting to meet in person before friend-requesting.
Furthermore, the group is a great resource for info/answers and we've already started roommate surveys, so people can have the most successful pairings.
Hope to see you there!

Nope... Only two ppl have posted roommate surveys as of now.

Congrats on your acceptances! Both are good schools, so you really can't go wrong. I will say though that when I had to choose between those schools, I ended up going with Loyola and haven't regretted it for a second. You can read my thoughts on Loyola and BU's interview days here and here, respectively.

As far as location, I personally love that Loyola is located in the suburbs, but that's just me. Also, at least the Forest Park/Maywood/Berwyn/Oak Park/etc. "suburbs" are really actually pretty busy with a lot going on. If you definitely prefer to be in the middle of a downtown bustle, then BU might be better. Regarding the grading system here (H/HP/P/F, not curved), it works out fine. If you want to pass, then pass. If you want to put in a little more effort and get rewarded for it (for whatever it's worth), then you can. It's not curved, so you're not competing against your classmates. Everyone can honor a test if they want too. I personally think that's more important than whether a school is P/F, letter grades, or anything in between. Good luck on your decision.

Hi Cyaneidae, as it has been mentioned, most people are just beginning to fill out their roommate surveys. As of tonight, there are only about 4-5 people who have posted their completed surveys. I would say that there really is no rush at this point. Seems like we're trying to get a feel of what we're all looking for without friend-ing everyone or scrambling to get roommates.

Someone who I know went to Second Look last year said that Stritch gives out a big packet with living information included. Hope this helps, and I look forward to meeting you face-to-face in a few weeks!

Like others said, no need to rush. I think people are just getting excited. It doesn't make much sense to do any roommate matching before second look unless you're not attending. Why do it over Facebook when you could find someone you gel with in person?

No not yet...the thing is I won't be able to make it to second look day....so I'm trying to do this from a distance...sad day -____-
