2013-2014 Stanford University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
First of all, like everyone has said already, most of people who step out of Stanford interviews do not feel 100% confident, so it's not a big deal if you thiinnk you mess up one or two stations. So keep calm and move on. Secondly, just like every other top med schools, Stanford has very limited spots (or even more so), so don't think you are not good enough if you don't get in at the end. We all know admission process is kind of random (I was rejected by my safety school without interviews). All of my friends who had an interview with Stanford at least get in a decent program, so the interview invitation from Stanford is a already extremely good sign for your application. Best luck everyone! And make sure you come if you get in 😉

I love it when trolls don't even take the time to put on a good costume... you should be fine Jedi

I think that comment was supposed to be sarcastic... Don't know. Sarcasm doesn't go well over the internet.

Has anyone who was complete in September received an invite yet...? Has anyone recently received an invite?

Stanford has been so quiet this year... No II's on SDN lately and no mass rejections like last year. I wonder when they'll send them with the new director.

Do any current students have any thoughts on what is going on?

Not a current student, but at the interview we were told everything is going to be a little slower and deliberate this year because of the massive over-enrollment last year. For example, they were predicting mid-December for first wave of acceptances vs early/mid-November last year. I assume this delay trickles down to not only the review process post-interview but also the pre-interview reviews before invites.

question. i know there is supposed to be a new director of admissions this year. was the director last year fired? if so, was it because of the over-enrollment?

Lol probably not. I don't think the directors are responsible for choosing who is accepted into the school. I've found that there is a lot of turnover for most directors jobs because it's a lot of responsibility (dealing with people who call every second to ask about the status of their app) and the pay isn't that great anyway.

Thanks for the response! Sorry if you already said this somewhere and I couldn't find it but could you tell me when you submitted your secondary and when you received the interview invite from Stanford?

nvm! found it 🙂

Has anyone gotten an interview invite lately? Stanford is notorious for sending them on weekend mornings. Besides that, all the school threads on SDN this year (Stanford in particular) has been so quiet...

No one?

I'm a first year applicant, but most of the schools I've applied to this year seem to be running behind where they were last year, according to other SDNers. Very quiet.

Thanks! I think part of it also is that SDN is so quiet this year in general. I mean the Mayo thread this year is 1/2 the length of what it should be (compared to last year and the year before that).

Okay I'll phrase it this way then (in bold so everyone can see)... Has anyone with a LizzyM score of less than 74/less than stellar stats gotten an interview invite? From what it looks like, Stanford isn't looking at apps by complete dates and are cherry-picking the top stat applicants and giving them interview invites almost immediately. I haven't seen an interview invite yet from someone with a less than stellar stats on the Stanford thread.

I wouldn't call myself "sub-par" at all (you might wanna rephrase that) , but my LizzyM score is indeed about a point or two below 74 and I got an invite.

Lol changed it! Congrats on the II! Are you an URM by any chance?

I'm pretty sure this is what they are doing... I submitted my secondary last week and woke up to an II today (LizzyM > 75). But I think the secondary deadline was last Friday so maybe they'll begin reviewing the apps they passed over very soon! 🙂

Congrats on the II! I guess it makes sense. From previous threads, it looked like you compete with your interview group/interviewees on your interview day for spots in the class. Previous threads said that during committee meetings, they look at each interview day one by one and will accept 1/3, waitlist 1/3, and reject 1/3 on that particular interview day.

By the way, what interview date options were you given? Just want to gauge where they are in the interview invite process.

Question: has Stanford mailed out ANY rejections so far??

No, supposedly, they have a new admissions director this year, so the application timeline has changed for Stanford.

I heard that there's a new director, but it's still pretty crazy that they haven't rejected anyone yet. I.e. put people like myself out of their misery. lol. I'm grateful to other schools for being quick about it.

It's possible they might just be gathering all the pre-interview rejections and will mail them all in one bundle.

I was digging around old threads today, and I found this gem: http://med.stanford.edu/irt/web_applications/mesa.html

For what it's worth, it looks like Stanford has a very thorough pre-interview and post-interview review process, and judging from this thread (some people getting interview invites less than a week after being complete), high stat applicants probably have some form of expedited review.

Every time I read something like this (above) on this thread, I wonder what it was in my application that made them pass me over... LM = 76 (so I think I'm "high stats?"), and I never heard anything back from Stanford after being complete mid-July. So I think they're passing up plenty of high-stats people too.

This process is too mysterious anyway. Could be the particular reviewer your app was handed to also (they could be slower to review apps). On top of that Stanford interviews less than 500 applicants anyway.

anyone know if stanford has rejected anyone at all. i know stanford is rolling so i would expect them to have rejected people, right

Apart from Nicco, have there been any other Stanford acceptances? I know NOT EVERYONE is on SDN but it's unusual that we have only heard from one accepted student.

At the interview they said the bulk of the acceptances will not begin until December.

I remember them saying this as well, but I assume there will at least a few acceptances in November and therefore SDN should hear about more than just one.

SDN has been very quiet this year and not many people are posting anything besides the usual posters. There aren't even the one post people coming on here to share their good news. For example, I'm sure Mayo has accepted at least 20 people so far, yet only 2 people have posted on SDN saying they've been accepted, and all the threads are half the length of what they were last year.

Thanks for your observation. I did not know this.

I agree. It seems like the traffic has simmered down this year compared to previous years. I can't seem to find a plethora of information about individual school application processes outside of Michigan... Dying over here as this long, update-less process drags on

Accepted today via phone call (literally shaking when I called back Dr. Garcia). Interviewed 10/11

Congrats!! (Also on your other acceptances)

Who knows. What has happened to all the SDNers? And one post SDNers too?
