applied early

APPLY EARLY!! IF YOU WANT TO GET INTO STANFORD MEDICAL SCHOOL!!

(It does not matter if you scored a 35 on the MCAT they look @ you holistically).

Also, I am a female.
I am from China.
That makes me a Chinese girl.

This is suspiciously similar to a post that was deleted from the Harvard thread...I'm a just a tad doubtful.

Stanford SOM just won two Nobel Prizes within three days! Beasty!!!

Hmm... It's strange they aren't following last year's pattern of rejection letters...

Does anyone know if Stanford allows applicants to jot down notes during the 2 min reading time and if they have the a copy of the prompt inside the interview rooms? Had my first MMI at another school today and found these two things to be quite useful!

They have a copy of the prompt inside the room but you are not allowed to take notes or take anything with you.

I sent Stanford an update notice about the fact that I was going to present at a research conference.

I got a response that said that they only accept additional information after an interview invitation which I'm guessing is a nice way of saying that I prolly won't get one... 🙁 Was this policy officially stated anywhere?

:: face plant ::

Sorry I don't go through each schools admissions page and read every word...but yeah just found that section.

tbh, seems like common sense not to send in the area emails if you haven't been invited yet.

well i didn't send an in the area email, it was just a short update letter. and i think you are using the phrase common sense a little loosely. I have seen plenty of people on these forums send update letters before their interview invite.

You're right. I totally misinterpreted what you wrote. My bad.

That's not what I've heard. In the area emails are supposedly sent to the schools in your range number wise who haven't sent you an II if you are going to be in town to interview at other school.

Yeah I would agree with you on this one.

I wouldn't go as far as to interpret it as them saying you won't get an interview. You're most likely still in the running, they just won't add the update to your file. 🙂

Secondary submitted and complete today!

I'm pretty late but decided to apply anyway. The curriculum here sounds amazing! It would be awesome to get an interview here.

Good luck everyone!

Hey guys,

Can someone please clarify the difference between the "Scholarly concentration" and the "Med scholar Program"?

From what I got they are both opportunities to do research..

I get that the SC is mandatory. But if you do MedScholar program does that substitute for SC? Or are they completely different things?

Any input will be appreciated! 🙂

Thank you!!

<sigh> Felt like I flubbed a few stations. Not a total crash and burn, but I've been kicking myself about it. 🙁 I guess I just have to wait and see...

Scholary Concentration= "Major" in medical school. Each requires 12 units (courses, research seminars, journal clubs, etc.) and there are sub-concentrations that you can complete as well (Women's Health, Cancer Bio, etc. that substitute 6 of those units with a specific focus area). There's a research project component to these concentrations that are usually funded through Medical Scholars.....

Medical Scholars= Funding for research projects while a student. These don't necessarily have to relate to your scholarly concentration, but most do.

Just checking in here. More than two weeks ago, microgirl, strugglebus and I were noting that we've all been complete quite a while (mid-July) with no word from Stanford. I'm mostly puzzled, at this point. I feel like my application must have been read by now, and there must be something that caused the reviewers to think I was a poor fit, though I'm not sure what that was. I believe that I'm a competitive applicant for the school, so their silence is... confusing.

Anyways, congratulations to those who have interviewed or have invites - and to those who may be receiving acceptances shortly!

There's a new director of admissions this year so things may be a tad different. Just an fyi

They also accidentally over-enrolled last year (goal: 92, matriculants: 110 -> 8 deferred -> class of 112), so they told us they were being cautious with acceptances as well. Small batches and later in the timeline.

Thanks for the heads up! More waiting...

I wouldn't worry - one of the med students at Stanford said he felt like he bombed the MMIs last year. And he's in.

I feel they drop the lowest MMI interview score (pure guess), because I did poorly in one of my interviews, but I still got in. So don't panic, if you mess up one or two during your interview.

I believe they drop both the lowest and the highest scores.

In my opinion MMIs take the pressure off interviewing because in the end all it translates into is a numerical score. Most people are going to be somewhere around the middle, so the admission committee will be looking to the rest of your application for distinctions whereas a traditional interview summary can contain red flags words and phrases for whatever reason that can serve to disqualify you.

Anectodal evidence: in one of my stations last year, I literally failed to say a single constructive thing and there was about 5 minutes of silence. Not exaggerating at all.

With 8 deferments from last year, it only leaves 84 seats this year. Last year was a good year for getting in, this year may be the opposite. Wondering if those 8 got any extra incentive for deferring.

For this question, would gap years between undergrad and medical school be counted as an interruption?

I think not...I think they are considering an interruption as someone taking time off during the four years of college, not after.

No, we did not. 😛 The admission committee just approves my deferral request very very fast (within 3 days).

To reassure those of you who felt like your MMI didn't go that well, last year, I thought this was definitely my absolute worst interview. No joke. When I finished half of the stations, I told myself to get myself through the rest of them and just leave with dignity since I thought there was no way in hell that I was going to get in. And I'm here now.

I don't want to give you a false hope, but don't stress too much! They do take other factors besides the interview into account...and you may not have done as poorly on the MMI as you think you did.

honestly, the way this thread is progressing, it seems like stanford is barely interviewing. what the heck?

possible folks are just not as active on sdn this year?

I do wonder if what others said is true that they are really interviewing very few people because they over enrolled last year. They already have a small class and interview relatively few people compared to some other schools, so it might just be a particularly hard year to get into Stanford!

Just scheduled an interview at UCSF -- anyone know if Stanford is responsive to in the area requests? I don't want to fly cross-country twice but also don't want to push my luck

Interviewed at Stanford last week, glad to hear I'm not the only one who felt it didn't go so well 🙁

It wasn't terrible, but it was the only interview that I can't say went well. Stanford was the 2nd MMI I did, the first went well and I actually slightly enjoyed it. Stanford's MMI was not very enjoyable, except for one or two stations. After each interview I've gone on, I almost always feel confident that I still have a good chance at acceptance, but after Stanford's MMI, I feel much less confident than before I interviewed. From the few people I've talked to who went through it, they also had similar sentiments.

So cold in this thread... Does anybody have the acceptance stats in previous year?

I know we have "likes" now, but +1 for emphasis, hahah. Urg.

I interviewed here very early and I also came out feeling down. The worst part is I was in the last MMI group and by the time I interviewed I was already sprung on the school.

Yeah, from the looks of it, you probably didn't get in. Oh well good luck next time lol

Just had a question on the "practice scenario" questions on the secondary app. Anyone realize there is no option for providing clinical care, but NOT in a private practice setting? For example, working as a hospital emergency room doctor? Are we to just assume this is the same thing as private practice? Just wondering what others with my dilemma are facing. Thanks in advance.
