2013-2014 Tufts University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Both are really strong programs, and more than anything it comes down to gut feeling from each school. Personally, when I was interviewing at both I felt that Tufts students were happier and more laid back, but that is obviously a personal opinion. Objectively speaking, the BU curriculum is a bit different, and IMO more stressful in that you start with anatomy right away and do at the same time as basic sciences (at least the last time I checked) whereas Tufts has a more gradual ramp up in difficulty. BU has a great new housing option, but Tufts has a much newer library and study area, so there is that to consider.

If you are from the area and are really torn, definitely take advantage of second look days and/or contact both schools and ask if you can go back and visit again. Do both in the same day to get a good comparison of both the students and physical space

While I prefer Tufts for the reasons stated, BU is clearly superior in terms of prestige/ranking/training however you define it.

Well ranking is true, and I suppose prestige would follow ranking. However, there is a big difference between those two measures and quality of training. If you are comparing BMC to TMC then I give the edge to BU, but if you include the broader Tufts network for third year with places like Baystate, Lahey, Newton-Wellsley, etc.. it is far less clear. Furthermore, the difference in rank and prestige is small enough that I doubt it would have an impact when it came time to match. IMO, between the two, finding the correct fit for yourself is far more important than relative position on the rankings list.

is there any sort of acknowledgement when you upload updates? I know other schools have acknowledged updates via email

Well, they show up under "upload documents" after you upload a document... so there's that. However, I haven't had an e-mail from them since 7/23. That leads me to believe my two updates were not explicitly acknowledged.

To the person who asked BU or Tufts... well, you are asking in the Tufts thread. I would say to go Tufts all the way (just because I would have handily chosen Tufts over BU).

For those who interviewed on January 9th: Didn't the admission office say that they would release the decisions this week?

Is anyone on the fence about the MPH program? I've been accepted but I'm worried about the cost and the workload with cramming it into 4 years. I know the program director says that MD/MPH students fare just as well overall but that's not to say that it doesn't limit them in some ways. Anyways, anyone have any other opinions or reservations about it?

There seem to be 6 interview days left in march so I don't think they're done yet. Good luck!

Only six more days!? 🙁 When will all this fruitless hoping end for me!?!? Just send me a rejection already if you're not going to interview me...

Hmm Don't worry! There were still 6 interview dates open in March when I checked last. And there were about 20 people at mine. So that's a MAX of 120 spots left (I'm sure they've filled many of them), but there is still hope! Also, people will still be declining admission/interview invites up until then.
I was complete beginning of September and received II mid-October. But some people got an II way later than their complete date. It's a crapshoot, so don't give up hope yet. lol

When was your interview? I applied to the MD/MBA program as well and was given the deffered decision status in Oct.
I interviewed Nov. 7th, was accepted to the MD program 12/6, and was accepted to the MD/MBA program yesterday

Just to be sure, Tufts has no update on the secondary status unless you are invited for an interview? As in, no rejections, no holds, no re-reviews, etc.?

Correct. At least I didn't have any changes to mine after I submitted it. I'm not accepted yet but nothing has changed on mine so far, and I doubt they'll change it once you're accepted since they do the entire phone call/email/snail mail thing! 🙂

Acceptance email today. MD/MBA program
potential future classmates! The cost of it is so astounding though, and I'm not sure how great the Brandeis program is...

Edit: Interviewed November, accepted to MD december, accepted to MD/MBA a few weeks ago.

I agree. It's insanely expensive. But I do like that it's specifically in health management. I'm not sure that other MD/MBA programs are completely tailored to that (although I'm not quite sure).
I think the 4-year aspect is great and do think it'll be worth it, BUT the money is definitely daunting. My question is...does the financial aid office consider the MBA degree as well when giving out the award packages, or do they only consider financing the MD?

I would really hope so, because 100k a year means 175k repayment by the time we exit residency, considering residency is only 3 years, and by that time, we would owe roughly half a million. Holy ****. I heard from students that the MBA program is more tailored towards nonprofit management, not necessarily healthcare management/admin, which is also along the lines of what I want to do later on. The 4 year aspect is also something I like, but it also means no summers I believe, because that is when most of the MBA gets done.

Yeah very true. Really? The guy in charge of the program who spoke to us on interview day made a big emphasis on healthcare management. I am definitely interested in an admin/management route. So I guess that's something to think about.
Yeah the curriculum is laid out on the website. First summer starts in July and one other summer is taken up, but they sprinkle one course or so throughout the med school curriculum as well. It's a lot more work, but I think it'll be worth it. They also told us that the MD/MBA students always get matched to their first or second choice for residency and usually their first. It's a useful thing to have and be knowledgeable about!
We shall see though. I am anxiously waiting to get into the MD part first...hahaha 🙂

Oh wow, I did not know about the matching haha. That is definitely something to consider. Anyway, best of luck and hopefully you get in!

Yeah he said the MBA candidates are very desirable. I liked that haha. Thank you very much!! :-D

Just saw I was complete no decision / in the re-review pile. What exactly does this mean at this point in the cycle? Love DC, would love GW.

Ahh...this thread has been very quiet lately! Have any decisions come out recently?
I intervewed on Jan 9th, so I'm wondering when we're supposed to hear back. This wait is so much more stressful than the wait for MCAT scores!

I feel like deferred ultimately means wait-listed or rejected, but maybe that's just me being pessimistic haha

Accepted to MD/MBA earlier this week. Not so happy that I have to make a final decision within 2 weeks, especially considering I have no information about financial aid yet.

Looking at last year's thread some deferred people got accepted in early May right before the deadline. So its sort of a pre-waitlist that would move a little bit before the waitlist does.

I agree! I interviewed on the 16th, and I'm really really nervous. I am praying for a yes. I believe we'll have to suffer for a couple of more weeks. They told us that they'll be reviewing all of the January interviewees around now and will be making decisions. They said mid-February we should have received our decision!

Really?!? They told us the end of January! Now I'm more confused and nervous lol. I'm gonna be attached to my phone for the next two weeks. I really want a yes!
I hope you get in too! I just loved how everyone seemed to know each other so well.

Oh my gosh! I actually wrote down "decision = middle of February" when they were talking to us. But if they told you that...maybe that will be the case for you!
I'm super nervous too. I have Tufts...and one other school (that's Texas so the class is practically filled at this point). I am scared, but I think we got it! I appreciate that, and I hope you get in as well! I also loved that about Tufts. Very collegial students and an amazingly friendly staff.

Does anyone know if they silently reject? I've been complete since 10/02 and haven't heard anything since.

I submitted 7/23 and have heard zippo. I assume my file is a silent rejection at this point. I'm not sure if, with your late completion date, they would have fully reviewed your file by now. I expect so. I would be interested to hear if anyone else has a bit of insight into their review process.

Withdrew my application yesterday (post-interview). Good luck everyone and congrats to those already accepted!

Anyone who interviewed for Maine Track in January hear back yet?

No calls yet? Or emails? I'm on pins and needles!! I just need to forget that they've probably already made the decisions for the January interviewees...maybe then I'll get a nice surprise phone call. Here's to hoping! Good luck to everyone else who's waiting to hear back!

ACCEPTED!!!!
Got a voicemail because I missed the call. I'm so excited!!
Interviewed 1/14, was told I would be hearing back 3rd week of February, so I wasn't expecting the news at all.
33, 3.8, 3.8

Good luck to everyone else waiting!!!!!!!

And this is when the rest of us who are waiting start freaking out....congratulations guys!!
