Hi Matt,
As an OOSer, I was wondering how we might get an interview invitation - for example, by phone, email, or snail mail?
Also, do you know if the school would like updates of our final grades for this term if we have them now?

I'm an OOS M1 student. Last year, they sent mine via email. Good luck!

OOS interview!!! This is a great day! Look forward to seeing many of you there!

ugh i hate the waiting.....interviewed in october and now just hanging out in limbo

Hey all, whats the interview format at UAMS? Is it one-on-one?

it's a blind interview (they only know your name) and you're usually interviewed by 2-3 people, usually including 1 medical student and faculty. It's a very low-key interview-they just are trying to feel you out and don't usually ask anything too tough. The interview lasts around 45 minutes. One of my interviewers asked a lot of hypothetical medical scenario questions. and they'll ask about your clinical experiences. Other than that, pretty typical and actually enjoyable. Good luck!!!

How are they sending the OOS invites if ya don't mind?

Hey Matt,
In the email they sent us about interview day, they said there would be a get together friday night with current med students and faculty. Do you know what time the get together might be? I am looking at booking a flight, but it wouldn't land until 6pm, and I really don't want to miss the get together!

Thanks 🙂

Hey guys just wondering if UAMS has a school of medicine building or if the classrooms with other programs are all integrated???

There is not a dedicated college of medicine building. The classrooms, sim labs, etc. are distributed amongst other buildings, but they're all pretty close.

For those of you that got interviews, did you get the conformation email from Linda yet?

I have not. I replied like 7 minutes after she sent out the IIs lol! I wouldn't sweat it this early though. Could be waiting for most/all of those invited to respond before they send out the info, seeing as how they probably need a rough estimate to plan the Friday event and such.

cool. What state are you from?

If you are OOS and didn't get an ii on friday does that translate into a rejection?

I don't think so. They will continue to send IIs to replace every person that withdraws from the offer. So they will probably be sending IIs until this Friday. This is of course how I understand the situation, so I may be off. Good luck!

Congrats on the invites!

It's normally at 7 I believe. They normally have it downtown, the last two years we've held it at the hotel they recommend staying at, but that hotel has changed brands/ownership recently so I haven't heard if they'll be using the same place or not. Either way, you should be okay with a 6pm landing. It doesn't take long to get downtown from the airport and the reception normally lasts a couple hours.

UAMS doesn't have the best record at campus planning... College of Medicine stuff is all over the education side of campus, but things are pretty close together.

Does the dinner figure into the admissions decision? I figure some adcoms will be there to meet the applicants. What percentage of OOS applicants invited usually show up to the dinner?

No it does not factor into the decision. The reception is really for you guys, and it's your only real chance to see the faculty and students in a more relaxed atmosphere. It is also the only time you'll have the opportunity to chat with some of the course directors one on one. I'd add that it's also the best time to learn a little more about the city, what life is like as a student here, etc. It's normally very well attended, I would estimate 70-80% on average show up.

Thanks Matt! Everybody I have come into contact with from UAMS thus far has been really nice. Can't wait to meet ya'll in January.

A little bird told me that early acceptances for Arkansas residents went out in the mail yesterday....

Yep, they sure did. One of my friends got his acceptance packet in the mail today!

Very close. He actually lives in LR.

Ahh, gotcha. I'm a couple hours away from LR, so I'll give my packet a couple more days before I've resigned myself to not getting one this month. Haha.

Got an acceptance packet in the mail today, first one of the cycle. It feels so surreal! Best of luck for the OOS interviews and the IS cycles!

Just got my acceptance packet today! So excited to be attending UAMS in the fall.

Received the OOS will not be receiving an interview notification. Its nice that they went ahead and let me know.

3.3 undergrad/3.8 smp/32 mcat for those interested.

Good luck all!

Hi everyone,

Got my interview invite and am thrilled to get the opportunity to possibly meet some of y'all in a few weeks. We got an email two days ago that said we should have received another email by today at the latest from Linda DuPuy with information about interview day. I did not receive any email. Did any of you? Thanks!

Anyone with some helpful advice on the blind team-interview style at UAMS? I just read its two physicians interviewing us at the same time (with a potential 3rd). I'm nervous and looking to prepare over winter break!

Thanks so much!

I had a physician (an ophthalmologist), a pharmacist, and an M4 as my interview panel. Just be yourself. It was pretty laid-back, since it's closed file. Mine was pretty conversational, and I think you'll be fine as long as you're real and honest.

Congrats and good luck to all of the invited OOS interviewees!

I had the same group of interviewers as above. They were all nice.

Did any OOS with absolutely no ties get an interview? I am also interested in the rural health program. The following is from UAMS's website "
November 15, 2013
Non-Arkansas residents with strong ties to Arkansas must submit letter to UAMS advocating strong ties to Arkansas."

Does this mean you HAVE to have ties in order to be interviewed? Also, will I receive an invite to send this letter in?

I'll be applying next cycle. Thank you all.

Regarding UAMS interviews - I had a clinical psychologist from Arkansas Children's Hospital and two M4's applying to pediatric residencies. I'm interested in pediatrics so honestly I had a blast. Very conversational and laid back. My advice would be to just be yourself and have a good time.

Regarding having no ties to the state at all - there's a much earlier post in this thread I think from a friend of mine who had absolutely no ties to Arkansas and was accepted. It's possible. Ties help though. As far as what they wrote in the letter, I haven't a clue. I'd have to ask.

Congrats to the early acceptances and OOS interviewees!

I will not be able to make it to the gathering... but hello everyone :hello:!!! Good luck to all 🙂 We should consider ourselves very lucky to have gotten that invitation. Competition is fierce!!!😒 According to MSAR out of 1,821 OOS applicants, only 86 got interviews. So Congrats :=|:-):

Thanks for the info! It would be helpful to know what they talked about/ what their topic was on their essay. Maybe you can PM me or just post here. I really appreciate it.

Unable to sleep and on Christmas break, so thought I'd take a peak at this thread. This site was a great resource and I used it often last year. MilkmanAl gave lots of good advice. It's hard to believe just a few months ago I was playing the waiting game, but I get excited living vicariously through you all as you eagerly await your acceptance letters. I will hold back any and all unsolicited advice as you will surely get plenty on your way to becoming medical students. I'm not an admissions expert and only have my own personal experience to draw upon; however, I was an in-state non-traditional recovering from a low undergraduate GPA and average MCAT score. I'm part of the rural practice program and am happy to answer any questions about it. On my interview day, I simply used that 45 min (which seemed to last only 5-10 min) to allow my interviewers to get to know me. I have several OOS friends in my class and am happy they found their way to Arkansas. Guys and gals, you are embarking on a wonderful journey. Med school has been every bit as intense as I expected it to be, but the faculty and friends that I have met here are constantly making it the best time of my life. So good luck and make excellent use of this time to do things you enjoy and to spend time with loved ones before next Fall!

Hi ya'll!!!! Just want to let all my broke peps know (like myself), that I rented a car and will be staying at the Marriott, and I will give a lift to anyone who needs it on Saturday. I am schedule to the 9:30 group. Well... its a compact car... so I guess I can fit 4 people hehe.

Can anyone discuss housing options near UAMS? I swear I've read it either in this thread or an older one but can't find it on mobile. Maybe even just post old info if you know where to find it.

any 1bd, within walking distance hopefully? Anything pet friendly?

Thanks to anybody that is familiar with the area and can help out!

I've posted something pretty extensive on here before about housing but I don't have the bookmarks from the older years anymore. Around UAMS (particularly within walking distance) your options are mostly to rent a house, or there are a few duplexes. There are very few traditional apartments within walking distance to UAMS and some of the few I've seen I wouldn't recommend. Lots of the houses in Hillcrest go up for rent in the summer though, so if being within walking distance is a priority, I would strongly recommend looking into that area. (Listings are found by word of mouth, facebook group, craigslist, etc.) There are lots of decent apartments that are within a 5-10 minute drive in Riverdale, Downtown, or Midtown.

I used Apartment Hunters to compile some listings for me before visiting Little Rock, then spent a Friday and Saturday here touring a bunch of places. I wanted to be within walking distance and lucked out finding a random "for rent" sign up in front of a house I liked when exploring the area between Markham and Kavanaugh. I know a lot of people that have pets so I don't think it will be too difficult to find a pet friendly place.

I can probably post something more extensive later, but hopefully that gives you a little bit of a start.
