Being that I'm on the waitlist, a couple of questions

1) If I get accepted off the waitlist, could I still defer?
2) Does the waitlist operate off the same quotas as the regular admissions process?

I think you can still defer once you get accepted off the wait list. And yes.

No mail for me yet in Georgia. Hoping I will not be waiting till Monday. Congrats to all who have been accepted!

I am waiting all the way in Miami.... It's ok tho.... Waiting by the beach, getting a tan. Can't complain! Hehe

Mine came today in NWA. Alternate. Gosh dang it. Send in those declines, people! I mean really, who wants to go to Arkansas...?

Alternate 🙁. I have to pay a $1500 seat deposit to another school by April 15th.

I took off work at noon, called the post office and they said my mail carrier is running late today, probably won't be till 3 or 4...

Not gonna lie I've driven all around the neighborhood looking for a USPS truck haha.

Hahaha I actually "LOL" best of luck!!!

Acceptance letter came today to Chicago! My first/only acceptance; So excited to meet everyone! Good luck to everyone on the alternate list!

I figure I ought to share what knowledge I've gleaned from the admissions office about the alternate list...seeing as I am also stuck in this awfulness with the rest of those on the list!

The list will be frozen and nobody admitted off of it until the list of rural medicine peeps is set and moved to the top, which will be in the second to third week of March. After that they'll start filling available spots as people decline.

April 30 is the deadline for students to commit to one school, instead of May 15 like last year, so at that point is when the first big move off the list will (hopefully) be. After that it's as people drop or defer.

Everyone might have known all this, but I didn't! Hope it's of some help to someone who is freaking out the same as myself.

At 5 the mail still hadn't been delivered so I got back in my car and drove around again- found him! Showed him my ID and he grumbled but gave me my packet.

Accepted! Congratulations and condolences to everyone else.

Congratulations! You are the first person I have heard of who stalked their mailman to get a packet. That's dedication. Or possibly crazy. Eh, the lines are often blurred with med students anyway.

I STILL haven't received my notification. The wait is killing me. Hoping I get something today - no matter what the decision - because the wait until Monday would be torture.

Got accepted Thursday from NWA. Cannot wait for this fall.

Someone already created a Facebook group called "UAMS COM class of 2018"

Congrats to everyone and best wishes to everyone.

Congrats to those who got acceptances! You'll want to get in on that facebook group ASAP to start facebook stalking your future classmates. If you wanna get real neurotic, human structure lab groups are alphabetized.

Actually, Linda DuPuy posts a bunch in those groups with really useful information/reminders. Enjoy your summer! It's the second-to-last one you are entitled to (and lots of folks give up their M1-M2 summer for research/preceptorships/etc.).

Traditionally, as far as the Facebook group is concerned, an officer in the current M1 class creates it after they get the official list from Linda DuPuy. So.... Hmm. Y'all are on the ball! 🙂 Someone might eventually ask for admin privileges on that group so they can invite everyone else that hasn't heard about it or looked for it. As Bamfu said, it's a great resource for reminders from Ms. DuPuy and is also a great way to find roommate or place to live.

Does anybody know if out of state has their own wait list? Or are instate and out of state students on the same waitlist?

Does anyone know the average number of wait listed applicants that get accepted each year?

i think it varies year to year. I talked to my premed advisor about it last year cuz i was wait listed. some years there's a ton of movement and all the students that were wait listed from my school got in. other years, there's not as much movement. but typically, it seems like the wait list here does get a lot of movement from what i've heard

Just thought I'd let everyone know that there will be at least one seat open. It was a tough decision, but I signed and sealed my decline letter today. Hope someone has a very good phone call/ letter soon! Best of luck in y'all's careers!

This thread has been exceptionally dead since last week- I'm just gonna go ahead and reiterate how excited I am 🙂

anybody get pulled yet?

anybody get pulled yet?
No, and they won't until they finalize the rural program list and bump those people to the top. That will probably be the 15th at the earliest, maybe a few days to a week later.

So what's the deal with student parking on campus? Is there any, and if so, what's the best option in terms of price and proximity to where classes are held? Although I plan on living near campus, I probably won't be within walking distance (or at least what I consider walking distance haha).

You're SUPPOSED to park in War Memorial or Ray Winder, which are free (sans a transportation fee that will be added to your tuition). Overflow goes to the zoo.

Finding a spot is usually pretty easy for class at 8 or 9, but student parking is in War Memorial or Ray Winder. From there, you can walk or ride a shuttle. From War Memorial, it is invariably faster to walk unless you get there just as the bus does. I do not park at Ray Winder, so I don't know if it's faster to wait on the bus. There are shuttles to and from those lots all day. If you are hellbent on riding the bus, I'd recommend getting there 25 minutes before class starts.

There's also a pay-to-park deck adjacent to the College of Public Health that you used to be able to park at for free if you left after 8 PM (no one there to take your money). Word is there's always a security person there now, though.

I heard a bunch of tips in last year's thread on where to park, but I never investigated them and forgot them. I think there may be a small lot nearer to IDW or ED2 that students can use (I'm sure it's always full), and I remember hearing about being able to park somewhere if you don't get a parking sticker. I dunno. Maybe Matt or someone can come shine some light on better choices if there are any.

Bamfu said most of it. The majority of students park in War Memorial or Ray Winder and walk or take the shuttle. It's a little irritating in bad weather/a little sketchy at night if you walk, but the shuttles run reasonably frequently. The other options are to pay for a garage level A, or Lot 1 I think it is, permit and be right next to everything (I have no idea what that costs but several of my classmates do that), get a free permit for Lot 10 (you have to have a sticker to park here and it fills up quick in the mornings, but it is free and closer than Ray Winder/War Memorial), or find parking streetside in Hillcrest next to campus (I do not recommend this but some people do it). There is also a cheap evening/student sticker that people get to park in the visitor section of the A level of the deck next to the library/COPH, but you can't park there until after 4:30pm. If you live in the residence halls there is a very small resident lot that you can buy a permit for, but I hear there's generally a waiting list for that.

I lived on campus for weeks last summer- maybe it was because I didn't know the good spots, but parking was a nightmare.
Does anyone use a scooter, or is that just a poor life decision for LR? I remember seeing free 50 cc parking by the library.

On another note, is there a dress code of any sort for class? Or does everyone just throw away their clothes and wear scrubs?

Would it be possible to get a spot on one of the parking decks? The one that we parked in for our interviews would be nice 🙂

No general dress code for years 1-2. On days you see simulated/real patients, you wear white coat + shirt and tie/female equivalent. My classmates wear anything from sweatpants and gym shorts with a T-shirt to slacks and a tucked in shirt. Matt can tell you about year 3-4, but being on different wards requires different dress to my knowledge.

That's the pay-to-park deck. You can park there, they'll just charge you daily. There is a list for the other assigned parking areas. I'm not even sure if students can get on it (I think they can), but I know employees that have been on the waiting list for years and haven't gotten a spot.

edit: Just get some nice walking shoes and prepare to trek to IDW/ED-2.

A couple people in my class drive scooters. Little Rock is hilly and Markham has a very loose speed limit (50 is really the same as 35 anyway) so scooters aren't the most optimal transportation if it's your only vehicle (especially this winter), but the free parking by the library does make it almost worth risking life and limb.

Wear whatever you want to class. But there is no reason for a 1st or 2nd year to wear scrubs unless it's gross lab or you're volunteering in the ER right after lecture or something. The hospitals are getting irritated about the stockpiles of scrubs that are missing and you will quite possibly be mocked by M3s, M4s, residents, and attendings for wearing scrubs to class when you haven't even stepped foot in the hospital yet. (Just throwing that fair warning out there 😀.)

Generally speaking 3rd and 4th year you will wear a lot of dress clothes on clinical rotations and scrubs on surgery rotations (except for specific days of the week when you will be expected to dress up). I bought a lot of ties and dress clothes during 3rd and 4th year. Though once you hit about November of 4th year you quit caring about most things that aren't related to interviews and you definitely start slacking on the dress code side of things. I haven't worn a tie to anything other than an interview in months. (4th year is indeed awesome once you're done with interviews.) Some rotations are more relaxed than others (Pediatrics is good about not caring about ties during the summer when it's horribly hot and you have to walk a half mile from parking to the hospital), but you want to look the doctor part when seeing patients and you'll be reminded of that frequently by some attendings.

That's Parking 2, Level A. They sell permits for the spaces on the other side of that white chain from the visitor/pay per hour parking. Don't know what they cost but you can definitely buy one, though there may be a short waiting list at times. If you have an evening permit you're not allowed to use the pay per hour parking before 4:30pm (after which it is free if you have the permit of course). Well, technically students aren't allowed to use it at all during the day but unless you're in your white coat or scrubs they often don't know and you can slip by and just pay the $7 or whatever if you need to park there for a day. If you've got a student permit sticker or are obviously a student though they can write you a ticket or some such thing. (This is relatively new, I never had to deal with it but have been hearing about/seeing it happen to people lately.)

Interviewed for the rural board on Tuesday and just found out I wasn't approved. Anyone else hear back or know how many people got it? Does anyone know how many alternates are on the list this year? Thanks

They never provide a number. Safe to bet at least 40-50 are on the list. They always make sure there are more on the alternate list than they expect to take. That said, some years there is a lot of movement so don't lose hope!

Okay, I don't know if any alternates are still checking this, but I called Tammy Henson this morning. She said they took 8 people total into the rural program and 1 was already accepted. So 7 people got moved to the top of the list.

So are those 8 people all alternates or did they only accept 8 people (alternates + med students) this year? And thanks for checking!

So they approved 8 people total for the program. 7 were alternates and 1 person had already been accepted as a student. Hope that helps!

Oh ok I see now. Thanks again and good luck to you! Hopefully us waitlisted people can see some significant movement this year :xf:

Withdrew my acceptance last week. Good luck guys and hopefully one of you will get my spot! Best wishes everyone!

Anyone here accepted to rural medicine? One of my buddies from undergrad was, we went and celebrated on Dickson last weekend haha.

Speaking of which, if anyone in the Fayetteville area wants to go grab a couple, I'm very down. Still riding high on my acceptance letter

I know browsing SDN tends to breed neuroticism at this time but if it helps, 2 of my friends are withdrawing as well. Now we know at least 3 people will be taken off the waitlist this cycle 😛

Okay great! Thanks!

It's been given to us (M4s) but not sure what their stance is on publishing it. I can't imagine why it would be a problem, people were given the option to opt-out of it if they didn't want their match location, etc. released.

See attached.
