2013-2014 University of California - Davis Application Thread

Can you talk about your experience so far. Is the curriculum truly organ based? I think not right? Is there an internal ranking of students? How about attendance? How many hrs of contact per week?

I really love it here! First year is not organ-based, but 2nd year is systems-based. There is no internal ranking for the first two years that I know of (I may be wrong about this, but I think every school has to rank the clinical years 3/4 in some way?). I'd say there's a good mix of required/non-required classes, but the schedule varies every week. This week, we had two days of no required class and the other three days had between 2-3 hours.

All classes are video recorded. I am watching one this very moment, haha...

Waitlisted today. @feesh how do they rank applicants that are waitlisted? So chances are pretty high to be accepted out of the waitlist? I heard they interview around 500, accept 100, and 100 waitlist 100. Is this correct? Thank you!

I'm sorry - I really have no clue! I'm sure it varies a lot from year to year. I remember in my WL email, they said that up to 50% of the WL has been accepted in the past.

Thanks for the info! How do you feel about first year not being organ-based? Can you describe how it's set-up a little bit?

I think the schedule is shown well here: http://www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/mdprogram/curriculum/courses/index.html. I like the curriculum layout! The first block contains fundamentals- anatomy, physiology, histology, molecular bio- that you need to know before studying any organ system in depth. The second block- pharmacology, microbio, pathology, immunology, endocrine/genetics- feels like a natural progression from this. These are also subjects that apply to all organ systems, yet Block 2 is a bit more medical than Block 1 (I mean, not that block 1 wasn't medical, but the subjects in 2nd block just feel more unique to medical school specifically). I think it's nice to have this year of broader overview before delving into specific systems individually. For one, when we take the more focused courses next year, it will be less stressful because it's not the first time we've seen some of the material . We'll also have a better idea of how specific disorders/medications can fit into the bigger picture.

Hope that helps. I'm sure there are pros and cons to each curriculum approach, but this is the only perspective I have. Overall, I genuinely like it and am very happy with the organization.

Hey guys, just wondering: Does being invited for the TEACH-MS program actually mean that you have been accepted into the regular MD program? I just got an interview invite via email. I'm not exactly sure how to react... Obviously I am super thrilled to have this interview invite, but at the same time I'm just hesitant thinking about what this could possibly mean: possible 1st acceptance?? I don't want to get my hopes up.. especially since I haven't received any acceptance email for the regular program. I saw that the website says "Once accepted to the UC Davis School of Medicine, interested students will be contacted" but maybe they changed things since they last updated that part of the website? I still feel like I shouldn't get my hopes up until I get a confirmed email about my status...

Thank you to anyone who can help!! And sorry for coming off as pretty neurotic. Not gonna lie, that's how I feel right now gah!!!

Sorry to be a downer, but the special programs are independent of the regular admissions. That doesn't mean you should lose hope though!

Awww boo 🙁 No you aren't being a downer. I usually try to keep my hopes low anyway. (That way I'll always be happy haha 😛) Welp thank you for the help anyway! I guess I'll just have to wait and see...

Okay silly question again, but does anyone remember if Davis said they will or will not accept Letters of Intent/Interest? Thanks!

At the interview, they mentioned that they do not accept update letters; while I was there, they didn't specifically say anything about letters of interest/intent, but I would imagine that they fall under the same umbrella.

Has anyone received a rejection letter yet? Not that I care about the outcome anymore, but it seems a bit rude for them to put us on an "interview waitlist" for 5-6 months and just let things run their course...it's always nice to be treated with respect. 🙂

So, is there an accepted students facebook page?

I have an interview there this Friday so..

my bad... congrats on the interview! Maybe they have added another interview since last time I talked to Dean Henderson during my revisit, he said the last day would be Feb 28th...

Does anybody know when Davis will make decision regarding wait list. I am on wait list since December. No news since. Does wait list means rejection?

Thanks. I was not very clear in my question. I suppose your answer in May refer to decision for people waiting for interview (i.e pre interview). I have not received interview invitation. Has been on wait list (pre interview) since Dec'13.

Ohhhhh. For pre-II waitlist, I have no idea. However, based on previous years, I think Davis does silent rejections... so you may not hear anything at all. There is no way to know, unless perhaps you call the admissions office to inquire about your status.

Hi there, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but UC Davis had their last interview group yesterday. There are no more interviews or II's this cycle. 🙁

It's true. I interviewed on the LAST interview date this cycle. It was March 7th. No further interviews will be granted this cycle.

The last day was this past Friday. I was a part of the group.

Does anyone know if UCD accepts a letter of interest for those who are WL? Would it even help?

Has anyone from the Feb 28th interview day received a call? The wait is killing me! Trying to stay busy but it's not working...

Just got the acceptance call from Dr. Sousa today! Guys, I have a feeling more calls are coming. ^_^ Interviewed 3/7.

I went business casual, during my individual revisit. Slacks and a nice blouse. Worked out well. Have fun!
Thank you so much... Would you say jeans are out of the question? I was considering jeans with a nice blouse and a sports coat.

My revisit involved rounding with a pediatrician at the hospital... I didn't see anyone working there that was in jeans. Med students, residents, and the attending physicians were all in slacks with a blouse or shirt/tie for males.

Thank you both very much for your input!! Slacks it is... :biglove:

Anyone doing the second look this weekend? I think that first day is gonna be more casual, but I have my shadow opportunity with an EM doc on Sat and I'll be needing scrubs then. I'll probably bring some nice khakis with me just in case.

Weird that only some peeps were invited. Wonder why??

Did they tell you to bring scrubs for the EM shadowing? I shadowed a couple EM docs during my individual revisit and I just wore business casual.

Does any know if there is any hope in getting a call before may 15?

They don't want any letters until after may 15, right? Or did they say no letters at all? I can't remember.
