2013-2014 University of California - Davis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They don't want any letters until after may 15, right? Or did they say no letters at all? I can't remember.

I called the office today and Joanna from admissions told me ucdsom doesn't accept any letters at all (even after May 15). I would just call and double check in case you're concerned about it. Hope that helps!

Regarding update letters or LOI, directly from the post-interview e-mail:

"Your application is now complete and ready to be submitted to the Admissions Committee. Unless requested, we do NOT accept accept [sic] additional information. Please continue to check the applicant portal for your application status. "

Have any accepted students heard back regarding their official financial aid package? I got my estimate a few weeks ago, but haven't heard anything official yet. I remember reading that they were going to start sending them out sometime in April.

Just the call from Charmaine about the estimate, nothing official yet.

Same here, I haven't gotten any notification about my financial aid, estimate or otherwise.
As of a few days ago, they are still in the estimate phase so I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm guessing they have to deal with close to 200 packages (accepted, offered, WL, etc).

P.S. They can only give estimates until they have more concrete details of the confirmed incoming class. I'm speculating that after May 15th you may have more info. Of course, if it plays a factor in your decision you can always ask :poke:.

A friend told me someone was accepted on friday. Did anyone else get a call?

I'm sure some people get accepted through May 15 as others begin to drop. I have a friend who withdrew their acceptance just last Wednesday.

I'm waitlisted and not too sure if I should be submitting any financial aid stuff? Anyone know what to do?

When I filled out my FAFSA I listed all the schools I could possibly go to, including waitlisted schools. If you've already done it you can still make changes to your school selection list!

I called and asked if there was anything that needed to be done regarding financial aid, as some schools have a may first deadline for materials. They said just make sure fafsa was filled out and that's it.

Thanks for the replies! I put them on my FAFSA stuff when I filled it out, so I'm covered there! Thanks!

I haven't heard from them or people I know who are on the waitlist as well.

Has anyone sent in an update letter or had any communication with the office of admissions?

According to quite a bit of posts on here they don't accept update letters.

It's probably been quiet. I know 3 people on the Davis waitlist and none of us have heard.

thanks. The wait is killing me. hopefully there is some movement soon.

I know it's killing me too! Especially because in previous years so many people got off the waitlist ~May 15/16!!
maybe all the people who got off the waitlist are off celebrating 😛

in a more serious note, how do you know if you are on the waitlist? Is there a formal waitlist or is everyone on it

They tell you post interview via email. Its a "formal" list, don't believe its ranked

I heard they rank from someone in admissions.

The wait is killing me too! They are a bit slow this year, perhaps because of AMCAS application delay we all experienced.

Per the Admissions office, some people have been pulled off the waitlist, but this year there just hasn't been as much movement as prior years.

Did you call the admissions office asking about it?

Yes, call the office this morning. They confirmed that the waitlist process has begun i.e. there are people who have been pulled off of the waitlist - but, as I mentioned, it is just a lot slower than prior years.

Just our luck this year huh.

Can't believe there is not even one SDN member who got off the wait list, or knew someone who did. Nonetheless, someone I know did share that the movement may be smaller this year since they changed their acceptance algorithm to achieve higher yield by compromising on GPA and MCAT thresholds compared to other UCs'! Higher yield helps their ranking apparently - sad if true.

Not true. I got a 7 on VR; I also know some people with average MCAT who got in. Bottom line: It's not July yet, don't give up just yet!

The point was that it will be extremely difficult if not impossible to get into other UCs' with low overall stats except for URM or other special case. As such, if UCD likes everything else for whatever reasons and accepts someone with low stats, that candidate is not going anywhere else. They may also be taking in more OOS with their relatively relaxed standards to get higher tuition and higher yield - kind of 2 birds with 1 stone.

I see your point now. But higher yield doesn't necessarily translate into higher ranking (likely not at all), since ranking = mcat + gpa + research funding + residency matching (the Dean of Admissions at one of the schools I interviewed at said this). Thus if they tried to accept the lower stats people that would only hurt their ranking!

Can't argue with that if this came from an admissions dean. Still at a loss to understand no WL movement. Also don't understand why they can't be completely transparent at this jucture in the process and let WL'd students know of their ranking and chances instead of adding to their anxiety. There is so muh emphasis on importance of transparency for med school applicants and even for medical professionals so I feel they should practice what they preach🙂.
