2013-2014 University of California - Irvine Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was verified first day of the application process and submitted my secondary a couple days ago. I am a California resident who goes to UCSB with a 3.75/ 34 mcat I was rejected today through email.

How do you feel about your secondary essays? Any grammar errors? Or your personal statement or LORs? Just wondering.

been ''under review'' since Monday. ahhhh been so anxious...I am sensing first batch of II's will go out either tomorrow (Friday) or next week.

Good to know they are willing to give that kind of feedback! Hopefully other schools will pan out for you. Best of luck!

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. At least the feedback they gave appeared to be thorough and they responded in a timely manner. Best of luck elsewhere 👍

Yeah they responded to my request in only 2 hours. I emailed them back a thank you because they really did give me a good response

Who did you email to get this info? I'd like to get some feedback on my app as well.

Secondary submitted today! :luck: (I also am applying to PRIME-LC)

hmm still under review...i hope that's a good sign!

im all paranoid now that theres something wrong with my application to reject me so quickly.

Just noticed that I had my interview request as well! Figured they would send an email or something, but I was checking the statuses on a few of my secondaries and saw it. Super excited; first interview! 😀

Congrats! I hope I get an II here too.. but first I have to submit my secondary haha

damn. im still under review since Monday. Because I am a reapplicant, I am really tempted to send an email to the admissions to tell them what i've done since last year......which I did quite a lot. and hoping that'll get me an interview...

Just submitted! This is one of my top choices so I hope I get an II! :xf:

Also, when looking at my application page, there is absolutely no information about my letters of recommendations. I noticed in the secondary instructions that it said that once you submit, you will only be able to see the instructions and LOR form. I never saw an LOR form to begin with. Did everyone else have this too or am I missing where to find it?

I emailed [email protected] to see the reasoning behind my rejection. She is the dean of admissions at UC Irvine.
Please let me know if it has to do with completing the required courses! I realized I didn't complete the upper div bio req (I haven't been processed yet, so still waiting on that) but I was wondering if it's even worth submitting a secondary or if they will automatically reject if you haven't completed the pre-reqs. It says on their website that they just have to be completed by July 15th though, so I'm not sure if they can reject based on that...

Wow! Just went and checked my status and saw I was awarded an interview! Was not expecting to see that on a Sunday evening.

So have people figured out why they got rejections?

has anyone, who received an interview, not completed their pre-reqs??

What is considered a "community activity"? Is this just volunteer work? Do we include paid work experience in this section? What about individual activities (i.e. triathlons) in this community activity section? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thank you 🙂

Hey Everybody,

Was going to contact the school directly, but I thought this question may have come up on here before.

For non-biology majors, will upper division classes in related areas be accepted? Clinical exercise physiology, metabolism, and pathophysiology are all 400-level courses that I have taken, but they are not listed under the "BIO" call number.

If anybody knows if this will work, please let me know!

Thanks,
Bill R.

No, they said it had something to do with me missing certain non academic aspects in my application.

Also I removed information about the response to keep the conversation confidential. Sorry about that.

Just bumping this in case anyone is able to help me out. If not - does anyone happen to know who I should contact to figure this out? The site indicates that they would address it at the interview, but at that point it would be too late for me to sign up for an upper-division bio class.

Thanks again.

I would think they would qualify. However, it really is in your best interest to just ask the school.

I honestly dont know if I should proceed with the secondary here. My stats are not stellar. 3.5-3.6 GPA and 27 mcat ouchh. I got a secondary though. I have very unique extra curriculars though. I will give it some though but your guys advice what should I do?

Im surprised I didnt get screened

This is just my 2 cents but it would depend on your state of residency. If you're IS, I would go through with it regardless. If you're OOS however, I reckon it'd be pretty damn tough to snag an interview with your MCAT score. Your unique EC's would have to be nothing short of curing cancer. You did receive a secondary though, so there is some palpable interest in your application.

That would be the logic behind my reasoning but we all know logic is, more often than not, thrown straight out of the window in the med school application process. So if it was me, I'd apply anyway. I wouldn't wanna look back and wonder "what if?" The only thing you really have to lose is the application fee but money comes and goes.

yea im in IS. I competed in some tennis tournaments professionally and had a chance to practice with my countrys tennis team and possibly represent my country in davis cup. Im currently sponsored and such. I also have a game on the iphone store thats gaining popularity but yea. Some other stuff like lots of research etc but those are my two unique things

I will do it money comes and goes. I feel like im wasting money though just cuz UC irvine rarely admits low mcats that arent URM (going by md apps.

After I finish Toledo tonight ill do that. Even though ill prolly be shot down who cares yolo lol

I'd say apply. I don't see why they'd send secondaries to people unless they're interested in them enough to consider an II. At the very least, it's worth a shot.

How long did it take you all to receive the secondary from here after your primary was verified? I was verified on 7/23 and still no secondary. Hoping for it on Monday morning
