oooooo I want that 10/17 slot...please send me an II UCSD!!

For those that received IIs, congrats! UCSD is a wonderful school with so much to offer. For those that haven't heard a peep since submitting your secondary, relaaaaaax. They'll get to you eventually. I think for our year (I'm an MS1), the most matriculants from one interview day came from a day in December (note: I said 'matriculants' not 'accepted' students). Anyways, I figured I'd say hi, congratulate those with IIs and calm those who are still waiting 🙂

Good luck

I think I read somewhere once that most med school matriculants come from later interview dates because people who interview early are usually top tier applicants who have their pick of many acceptances, while later interviewees might only get interviews at 1-2 high ranked schools.

Yeah, that's most likely true. I threw that fact in there just so that those who haven't received an II yet won't think that their chances of acceptance are completely shot. But yes, you are probably correct.

I forgot to mention, if you have any questions about UCSD, I'll try to come here every once in a while and answer them. I'm pretty busy (with school and life in beautiful La Jolla), but I'll try to get on once a week or so. Good luck everyone!

I have a question that's been driving me insane!

On my secondary I marked that I'm interested in MD/MPH and MD/advanced degree as a medical student. That doesn't mean I'm applying to an MD/MPH etc program right? Just that I'd be interested in it if I was accepted?

Honestly, I think it does :|.

Might be to your detriment because at most schools, they screen you for those programs first, then kick you back into the regular MD pile if you don't make their cut. You didn't do MD/PhD did you? Just the MPH and clinical research programs?

Please call and make sure though! Maybe if this is the case, you can get yourself kicked back out if need be.

Well it was the way the question was phrased. It was something like "as a medical student, would you be interested in any of the following before graduation" and then it gave you a non-MSTP MD/PHD and MD+MPH from Cal State SD as options. If you picked none it gave you this "make sure you look for research opportunities at other institutions then" message. I emailed them to make sure, but we'll see I guess. Through AMCAS I only applied to MD.

Hey LuciusVorenus,

Yeah, I don't really have an answer to your question. Good idea on e-mailing them to make sure, though I doubt marking your interest in those programs will be detrimental to your application. E-mailing Brian from admissions will give you a clear answer. Sorry I couldn't help much. Hope you get an answer soon.

I emailed the general admissions email but got no reply, I might email the person you just mentioned instead. Thanks!

I'm not sure how to approach the autobiographical sketch. Should I write it like my personal statement but with a better overview over my whole life? Should I begin with a hook? Any advice is appreciated 🙂

I started with a hook and basically started writing out my life story from birth to today lol....then I realized I was wayyy over the character limit! 😳 I went back and highlighted the parts which showed my interest in medicine and how my life experiences shaped the goals I have, but tried not to say anything I already said in my PS. It was definately hard, but I dug really deep and discovered there are plenty of other experiences to talk about! Many I didn't get a chance to disclose in my PS and many non-medical experiences which reveal personality traits, diversity, challenges, etc.

This is basically a chance for you to elaborate and give them a better picture of who you are as a person, where you come from, what you've gone through...you definately want to use this space to say something new that's not in your PS!

You can do it! And it will be fantastic! 🙂

Does anybody know if UCSD is responsive to in the area updates?

Anyone get a secondary recently?

Just so people who still haven't filled it out yet know, I called and they said it's simply asking if you would be interested in applying AFTER you've started your first year - so you're still in the same MD applicant pool, it just wants to know how interested you are in research I guess.

is it really taking 6-8 weeks to review a primary app after submitting SSN? Has anyone gotten a secondary in less time that that? If not, it doesn't look good for me.

I was verified 7/31, but was awarded a secondary 8/15 after the SSN and acc verification (8/5)

Did anyone else get an ebill email from UCSD a few days after submitting your payment? It doesn't mean my payment didn't go through right?

I just got the ebill, and my payment was posted (and drawn from my banking account) about a month ago. Don't sweat it. 👍

I submitted my SSN on 8/12 and received a secondary on 8/15

I just did... I submitted my payment a few weeks ago. I think it might just be an automatic thing since it's the beginning of the month.

Maybe call and ask? I think they would tell you. As a reapplicant, I know last year the thread was pretty sure it was a no

Thanks Nikki! And I agree, the thread is kinda dead, but it was more live a month ago when the first IIs were going out

Totally get that this might be my neurotic self freaking out, but has anyone not gotten a secondary for sometime and then received one?

I got the "create an account" email on 8/21 and then radio-silence. And folks have received secondaries after me. Does this mean I'm not getting one?

I'm thinking those who have gotten ones before me have better stats and stuff, but that there might be hope for me later on? Given the delay in AMCAS processing maybe they're being more stingy/slow with giving them out?

Would it be a terrible idea to call them and ask? Anyone done this with positive results?

Sorry for the freak out, but SD is my number one choice! 🙁 I would really really really love a secondary but at the same time, would rather just know I'm not getting one rather than just keep getting super heart-in-throat every time I get an email 🙁

I think it took me something like 10 days to get the secondary, and it might take longer now since more people are getting verified. I wouldn't worry too much.

Took me 18 days to get the secondary

I forgot to post on SDN for a while...though I may or may not have been stalking each thread every couple of hours 😉

8/26 - AMCAS verified
8/29 - Secondary received
8/30 - Secondary sent

Now it's just an endless waiting game...:scared:

EDIT: ebilling note is because of application fee - no action required. Just called. 🙂

anyone interview yet? how is it?

I want a secondary!!! 🙁

I'm thinking about calling---I'm kinda lame and searched the last years threads and found a note from someone who said all secondaries were autosent and that they go back later to hand read for secondaries. Hoping thats the case this year and I wasn't just autoscreened out

All the UCs prescreen before sending secondaries. UCLA, UCSD and UCSF take the longest time before sending secondaries in my experience. After all things were in (SSN and account verification) for me (1 week), I waited about another 2 weeks before getting one from SD

I'm in the same position as lall. Still no secondary from la or sf either though.

Jennyfish, i know Ucs screen but since i haven't gotten secondaries and people who were verified after me have, i have to wonder if I've been passed over on, and they'll come back to debate me or if I've just been passed over for a secondary and will get a rejection eventually. Sf is ok because they'll tell me soon I'm sure given how quickly people on thread are getting weeded out, butttttt la and sd don't tell you until the end. Hella sucky and stressful

Oh ok, I didn't catch that based on the last few messages I have read. That makes more sense. I know some people had same day secondaries, but my guess is they're in the vast minority and must have something extremely compelling about their apps. Here's to hoping for some kind of good news for you all from those schools though. 🙂

The silence can be pretty unnerving. But it's also only been 2ish weeks. If your app is otherwise great, it may still be too soon to count yourself out!

Does anyone know if mstp application takes longer to prescreen for secondary or it goes through a completely different route than regular MD? Thx!

Just submitted the secondary...am I considered late?

Does it take longer for them to look at people who also applied to the PRIME program? I'm a little bummed that I haven't heard back.

Best of luck to those of you who are interviewing tomorrow! Congratulations on getting this far on the process! I'm sure you guys will do great 👍.

Is it just me, or did UCSD not send out too many II's yet this season? Comparing to past year's threads, there are significantly less reported II's on SDN 😕
