2013-2014 University of California - San Diego Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did anyone do both the MMI and PRIME interviews on their interview day?

I was invited to interview and they mentioned in it that they wanted to interview me for PRIME as well so I am assuming it's a different process...are they two separate admissions like at UCLA or is it more like UCSF where you get admitted to the school then you get admitted to PRIME?

Thanks yall

Anyone else get a weird e-bill notification from UCSD with subject line "UCSD Electronic Billing Notice OCTOBER 2013" or am I all alone? Expected more SDNers to be complaining about this this morning!

...If charging applicants a semesters tuition is a new part of the process, I will faint 😱!

Regardless, best of luck to you all 😍

same here...

Must be some sort of mistake.

Yeah I got this notification this morning too. Is this just a really late confirmation of our payment for the secondary?

Did you receive the same email back in early september as well or is this the first time?

If you submitted a secondary, you're in the UCSD system (remember creating your log in?).

Those are just notices sent out to everyone every month or quarter or whatever... depending on your status (undergrads, grads, medical students, applicants, etc). They send them out even if your owed balance is zero. I'm guessing the reason why med school applicants get them is because they have submitted a payment through UCSD's billing system.

I was a student at UCSD. This is normal. 👍

Awesome, thanks so much!

Yeah, you're not alone 🙂 I figured it was just an automatic email sent to everyone in their system

Has anyone been "put on hold" after submitting secondary? Seems like UCSD is going slower this year. Submitted secondary in July and haven't heard anything.

I still don't know what that "Interview hold -- " means on the status page. Does everyone have that? I've had that since day one 😕

It means you're not on hold for an interview. I have it too! I think everyone does unless they were put on hold.

My best recommendation would be to visit your local pharmacy and request an over-the-counter chill pill 😛

Phew. 😀

Prescription strength chill-pill needed.

wait... my "Hold For Interview" doesn't have a date...
Also, I haven't heard a thing from them. Complete since 8/21.
Is anyone on the same boat?

Yeah seems like the default is hold of interview without a date when they're still reviewing your application. If they do add a date then it means you're on hold. So no date is actually good.

They're still on August apps from what I've seen on this thread so no worries.

Yup. Complete 8/1 and total radio silence ever since.

I, for one, am hoping this means SD is going to do rejections this year, rather than the bs holds and no-contact they're known for

My brother, who's been complete since early July has heard nothing.

Our roommate who applied at the same time as my brother already interviewed.

I had a coworker who was complete early September; she's attending her interview next week.

I was complete mid-august. I'm on the silent boat.

It looks like they're not necessarily interviewing based on when you submitted your secondary, which is unfortunate for some of us.

Yeah, SD has been following a high-stats trend for the past few years. Its funny though, they think they're UCSF or something. A lot of those kids aren't going to matriculate. Sucks for SD I guess

Well, my "low-statted" self will be happy to take one of their spots. : )

I was there earlier this week and they said that they will start doing rejections this year, because they felt bad previous years for keeping everyone in the "pool"

I wouldn't be surprised if SD had some significant pull, though. It has the benefit of being such a nice place to live; I'd rather spend four years in La Jolla's weather than SF's, to be honest.

Yeah seriously, the weather here is amazing... all year round

Omg. I would take SD over SF any day! But I'm just saying....SF is allowed to be more stat heavy than SD is. From what I've noticed, SD has interviewed a lot of people on SDN that have interviews at the Ivy's and stuff, but not many that have the more modest interviews. That's more what I meant about not matriculating there

California schools just seem slower than other schools. This is probably because they have to spend the first few months screening for secondaries. I would say it's still way too soon to panic. Schools where we should be panicking (like Hofstra) are more obvious about passing us over

Yeah I agree, I feel like these schools are considering stat heavy applications first. No way they are making decisions in order of completion date, or at least I find that very hard to believe.

complete 8/18 here and no word yet 🙁, I think I would cry from happiness if I got an interview here... does anyone know what days they send out IIs?

Lol so harsh! SD is still very good so they deserve the high stats. But I'm more than happy to have a spot since I got rejected by UCSF already...
Sucks to not have English as your first language. Cuz the MCAT is not for foreigners....

C'mon now! SD is a top 20 and seems to have much more reasonable tuition than UCLA or UCSF...plus as others have said, the weather is bomb 👍

That's rather harsh. UCSD is a top 20 school on the rise. I interviewed here and there is a lot to be excited. If I got into both UCSD and Hopkins, it would honestly be a tough decision.

It might be a slight exaggeration, but I have seen people on sdn and irl who are the "top tier type applicants"and only apply to some of the ucs "just because" and would only consider ucsf if they got accepted. It still comes down to a game of prestige, even if sd is an amazing school 😛

My belief is that US News ranking really don't mean a whole lot. They're not scientific and put too much weight on certain aspects over others. Any top 50, especially any top 20, will get you where you want to go. The question then should revolve around what matters most to you (location, happiness, curriculum, facilities, area, prestige). That said, when did #15 on USNews stop being prestigious?

Geez people. Get over it. I have nothing against SD and would definitely take SD over SF (as I've already said). That being said, it is still rising, it is NOT ucsf. And yes, many people would take it over SF, but more would take LA or SF over it.

Not to mention, as I said, many of the people I've seen on SDN (small sample size, I'll give that to you), who interviewed at SD have interviews at places like SF, Harvard, Columbia, Hopkins, Mayo etc. and few have the GW, Davis, Tufts etc. as their others.

Yes totally, I believe you that you would take SD over any of those schools, but I'm also saying that the prestige of those schools is going to be hard for most of those candidates to ignore.

My opinion, you have yours. Chalk it up to my being jealous of your invites- UCSD is my number one choice, I'll trade you my UCSF for your UCSD invite

Edited because sometimes I'm too sensitive to read properly. Sorry

Wow, really? Way to be an *******. For your information I scored a 14 on the Verbal. Thanks, try again

Also, if you're going to be racist, let's try and spell out "because." Sorry, the MCAT isn't for idiots, either.

I thought the OP were referring to him/herself about English not being his/her first language and how it held them back from doing better on the MCAT, not directing that statement at you, but maybe I'm reading it wrong. Congrats on the 14V btw! I could never seem to crack that section.

Maybe. Apparently I am sensitive.

Thanks, neil

Seriously. The second time I took the MCAT, i went up on both sciences but dropped 3 points on the verbal. HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN

I think you just have to have a different type of brain for it. For me, my physics scores refused to move no matter what I did. Verbal....I didn't really have to study for. Got used to the structure, and it was done. If I had the option I would give up a couple VR points to PS haha

That's how I interpreted TeaCup as well

Yeah, edited out. I was being too sensitive. And hey, maybe that 14 doesn't say as much about my comprehension skills as I thought, eh? Haha

Naw man, it does. That's a really impressive number. I was always in the 10-12 range...I never could have gotten that high up there...that literally means you missed 3 questions tops...that's nuts.

Just so people don't misunderstand me about the MCAT, I was talking about myself. And I haven't gotten an invite yet! I'd die to go there.

In response to all the recent posts, well, that kind of escalated quickly .

As petty as it sounds, ranking and prestige aren't exactly interchangeable. Yes, everything you said is true, but you have to admit that there are people who would quickly choose an acceptance to schools that are more widely "recognized" than a school that may be less "prestigious," yet a "better fit" for them. Assuming money is not a deciding factor, of course 😛

You have schools like UColorado that are top 10 in primary care, but you don't hear as many people talking about wanting to go there than Yale, Mayo, Johns Hopkins, etc. Not everyone is like this, of course! I'm just saying that not everyone who applies to UCSD considers it as their top 3 (the interview/acceptance hoarders )

Either way, I hope you all are able to land interviews/acceptances here. 😀

maybe I'm wrong, I dont have to time to go to each site and look it up so I just went to MSAR, but all the UC's have very similar tuition (~$32k instate and about $10K added on if your out of state... Davis was a bit higher...). Cost of living may vary alittle but anywhere near La Jolla, is gonna be pricey.... I just don't see UCSD costing less in the end (not by an amount that matters anyways).

Oh I was just looking at USNWR:

http://grad-schools.usnews.rankings...ools/university-of-california-san-diego-04011

These numbers may be wrong but it says ~11k tuition instate and ~25k out of state....which would be significantly cheaper than UCSF (~32k instate) or UCLA (~35k instate).

But maybe the numbers are wrong on USNWR?
