It took me two cycles, too. This included more volunteering (both medical and non medical) and +4 on the MCAT. I've noticed a trend while interviewing. It now seems that "non-traditional" applicants are the new "traditional" applicants. Almost everyone with which I interviewed and spoke told me that they had a graduate degree, military experience, or post graduate employment for a couple years. I really have no idea how many people get into medical school these days straight out of college, but it seems to me that post graduate experiences may eventually become another de facto requirement, like volunteering or working in a healthcare setting (some schools do not technically require this).
