2013-2014 University of Central Florida Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It took me two cycles, too. This included more volunteering (both medical and non medical) and +4 on the MCAT. I've noticed a trend while interviewing. It now seems that "non-traditional" applicants are the new "traditional" applicants. Almost everyone with which I interviewed and spoke told me that they had a graduate degree, military experience, or post graduate employment for a couple years. I really have no idea how many people get into medical school these days straight out of college, but it seems to me that post graduate experiences may eventually become another de facto requirement, like volunteering or working in a healthcare setting (some schools do not technically require this).

So anything left is getting sent out today?

+1, most applicants these days are at least one year out of college if not more. I think this is the new trend for most medical schools. Perhaps the stigma of reapplicant isn't as bad as people make it on here.

The impression I got on interview day was that it's less about traditional vs non-traditional and more about the applicant showing consistent interest and involvement in caring and helping others in and out of health-care settings. I'm sure if you looked at the stats the class would be very diverse which UCF puts a huge emphasis on but ultimately trad or non-trad, they are looking for people who have shown they can handle the academic demands of medical school as well as the personality demands of being a caring physician.

Agreed. I think they just want passionate people who care and are interested in various different aspects of medicine. This diversity comes from age, experiences, ideas, etc. It's all about the person (This is really UCF's unofficial motto IMO)
Being a non-trad usually gives you more experiences, but you don't have to necessarily be a non-trad to have said experiences. But I do admit there are A LOT of non-trads going into medicine. Tulane med is known for being a school with like 50% non-trads. But also I feel like other graduate degrees like Ph.D's have a fair amount of non-trad applicants too. Just my 2 cents.

I also agree that the admissions process is not targeting a certain population of traditional or non-traditional students. It was just an observation. I never got an impression that non-traditional applicants, by virtue of them non-traditional, were preferred - only that they were plenty of them. And yes, it is hard to do in 3 years all of what someone else did in 9 years (that was my tenure), but it's still possible in many cases possible. In my opinion, the industriousness of those outliers may actually make them better applicants. Character, experiences, and demonstrated success, among others, seem to be the things admissions committees seek. Ph.D's certainly do have a fair amount of non-traditional applicant, too.

Hello REL,

I just wanted to ask about a concern of mine. I am interested in possibly pursuing a competitive specialty and it is my understanding that you have a better chance with a home program vs away. I feel UCF students are at a disadvantage in this regard, but I talked to an M2 and he told me UCF is actually trying to build a home program for the class of 2018 (I know UCF has an IM program currently). Could you please tell me more about these plans or more information?

Does anyone know how often UCF accepts applicants? (Weekly, Monthly...etc.) And how many each time?

REL, could you let me know when in March those on the waitlist will be hearing about their final positioning? Thanks

The committee meets on Tuesdays (seems like weekly but not positive on this) and I believe REL told my interview group they accept the top 5-6 on the overall list after each meeting.

Anyone else up that interviewing today? Soooo nervous this would be a dream come true!!! I'm already just so excited for the opportunity!!

REL has laid Excalibur upon thy shoulders and I was officially just knighted. This acceptance is a huge blessing to my family and I, and I can't wait for August. UCF is by far the school that will provide for me all the tools that I personally need to become the best physician I can be. I am so excited to meet all the others in the class. If the group I interviewed with is any indication of who will be in the class of 2018, there are truly some amazing people that I will be embarking on this journey with.

Just Knighted. I've wanted to go to UCF since I first saw REL try to recruit their entering class in 2007. I'm a reapplicant who just barely missed coming off the waitlist 3 application cycles ago. After taking REL's suggestions on improving my application to heart, I now sit with an acceptance. After seeing many many schools and dealing with many many admission departments, I can really say that UCF has a top tier admissions department. It's almost as if REL has gone through the process himself with an eye on how to minimize stress for the applicant. If you don't get in this year, talk to REL. Do what he says. And reap the benefits of an acceptance that determination brings down the road.

This thread has so much more action than the UF 2014 one. That one's still on 8 pages, go UCF!

This is the longest wait of my life!! Lol

Hang in there! That phone call makes all the waiting worth it and UCF is by far the fastest school/admissions I've ever dealt with. REL is so upfront and honest about everything it takes the stress out of the process, at least it did for me! When is your call date?

The 26!

Least that is soon! Although 7-8 days can feel like an eternity when your future is on the line. The worst is the day before/day of I got the call the Tuesday night before my call date. My department doesn't allow personal phone calls/cell phones on the floor so I had to leave my phone in my locker all day and the torture of knowing I would miss the call was terrible. Least REL is awesome and left a voicemail allowing me to call him back up until 9:30pm ET which I made by 15 min since I'm on the west coast. Waiting all night to call him back would've been worse!

Does anyone know if UCF would grant 1 year deferrals to admitted applicants? I can't find anything on the website about it. Thanks!

Hey guys hope everyone is doing well... I was just curious if there are any ideas on if we should expect a March status update for the waitlist? The Feb update was a bit earlier in the month and I would certainly love an update on how things are moving along. Definitely love this part of UCF's admissions process... removes some of the mystery haha

I know there having a meeting on march 26!

Anybody else waiting to see UCF's match list? I read that 100% of their students matched, so that's awesome! This list will definitely play a big role when I make my decision.

Yes! So excited to see it, hopefully people start posting soon! 🙂 My decision is 99.9% made, this will just help ensure what I already know!

Me too!!! I wish there was a video of the ceremony!

everyone should immediately turn down their acceptance here (solely so those of us in lower third can get some love) 😉 .....for real, I'm happy for all of you who will end up going there. Still my first choice to be at ucf, but it's sinking in that I'm likely going to end up out of state

Pretty solid match list! Matched into most specialties, including quite a few competitive ones. I see Harvard, Mayo, UT Southwestern, Stanford, Baylor, UPenn, Georgetown, Einstein, Emory, Northwestern, and UC Davis in the mix!
