2013-2014 University of Colorado Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haha already done! Was crazy expensive though, but definitely worth!

Interviews here seem to vary depending on who your interviewers are (they range from conversational to stress interviews). I had both. Be prepare to answer typical questions regarding your application as well as give your opinion on healthcare topics and ethical scenarios. Good luck!

Hi friends! I literally just received a call from Colorado yesterday and have an interview this Friday! Ah! Any tips/suggestions/etc? I am OOS :O

The interviewers are a wide range from retired professors to second year medical students to social workers. Some will have read your personal statements, others won't even bring it up. They all care about different things.

Also the room numbers are confusing. The buildings are numbered. I know one or two students ended up in the wrong place.

I will say the atmosphere is very welcoming and bring comfortable shoes for waking on your tour.

Congratulations and good luck!

I brought in a change of clothing (from business to business casual) for the tour. So if you are like me and will die walking down a flight of stairs in heels or something - bring that. Bring some snacks. Bring a pen/pencil, maybe also a notepad (my interviewer commented on me taking notes during the interview). You will have a room to keep your stuff in between all the events which was really nice.

Bring/do something that makes you standout. For me was my mini business in selling unique homemade thank you cards and I "gave them a sample" while giving them a thank you card.

I had one very conversational interview and one stress interview as well. I'd recommend glancing at this list, if you haven't already: http://advising.colorado.edu/sites/default/files/Med_100

Almost every question in my stress interview was from it, word-for-word. Good luck!

ARE YOU SERIOUS?!? Those were over half of all the questions I've gotten from interviewers---verbatim. Man, this is what I get for avoiding SDN during my application process.

It's ok - don't want to be too well versed. My interviewer and I talked about if I should get a puppy for 50% of the time. :/

Haha I hope to get your interviewer? 🙂

And WOW, I did not expect to get so much support and tips from the friendly strangers of SDN! You all are so great!!!! Thank you so much! I cross my fingers and hope everything will go well this Friday. CU is such a dream for me that I had never expected them to call me x_x

It was more nerve wrecking because he didn't give me a chance to answer any of the real questions. I honestly thought I did SO bad they called me the same day to reject me immediately and tell me to give up :/ . They called me when I was applying for FAP for the next application season - ironic right? Haha

Hahaha aw, but at least it was the good news, and not the bad! That's what matters. : ) What is FAP?

If you get approved for FAP they let you take mCAT and apply to med school for a lower rate... Haha

I see I see. Well, anyways, crossing my fingers and hoping I will maybe meet some of you guys who are interviewing tomorrow

Puppies are awesome! Everyone seems to have dog or two in Denver.

Do you have one? I want to have a dog and I want a roommate that either has a dog or willing to get one.

I always wondered, is it possible to get a dog during medical school? I mean, I can understand getting a cat because cats don't require too much in terms of care... but dogs seem like they need so much time. 🙁 I want a dog too, but I don't want to get one, if med school is too busy for one.

I'm an animal lover and have been thinking the same thing. I'd love to have dogs and cats one day but I'm thinking that I will only have time for a cat during med school. I've been thinking about adopting a younger/house trained cat for school (whenever that happens)!

I have a super cute kitty!!! But I will need a non-allergic roommate. I am working on training my cat to sit and jump.

Are IIs still going out? Would love to at least visit here but I haven't heard anything since my late completion in October..
They said interviews will be held through first Friday of March.

I assume they are still sending II because some people may have already gotten acceptance and will turn down CUSOM II - which will open up some interview slots 😀

For any of those who are on the official Class of 2018 Facebook group, roughly how long did it take the group admins to add you?

I have been waiting for about two weeks to get added to the group. All of my FB info lines up with the name etc the admissions office has for me.

Apparently they are waiting for an updated list. I was let in after a 2 days but that was before the end of January.

When I interviewed, they said that the March day will be their last interview day, and then we all have to wait and hope until March 31 (for those of us who don't immediately get accepted).

For those who submitted their CU contract 2 weeks within acceptance, was there a confirmation email or something of that nature?

Thanks!

I think there's only one interview day left; am I right to assume we should find out our status soon?
Based on last year's thread, the notifications started coming as early as a day after the last interview. I'm going to try and use this site gingerly so I don't go insane (will probably happen anyways).

I had no conformation but I did call in to check.

I was accepted about a month ago (IS, 32, 3.8) and was wondering if any of you had any info on the Anschutz/Colorado Springs branch assignment? I applied to both, but picked Anschutz as my priority and was just wondering if anyone had any insight into how they'll decide or whatnot.... Thanks!!

Accepted! Got a call from someone (I can't remember who it was--I was too excited) last night just before the Oscars started. I still haven't received any email, though.

I interviewed January 31st. I'm OOS, 3.68gpa 33 MCAT, URM. I had a crazy amount of volunteer hours and research, though.

Just thought I'd let those of you on edge know. I've been there. Best of luck to all of you.

I had designated both with Anschutz as a priority too.

I got a call from Erik Wallace, who is the new director or dean (I can't remember which) of the Springs branch last Thursday. He gave me a little run down of what they are trying to accomplish with the Springs branch and whatnot. He told me that they plan on pulling people who designated Springs only first and then fill the remaining spots with individuals who had designated either branch and show an interest in attending 3rd year there. It sounded to me like they were looking at applicants that will fit with the pool of individuals that had assigned the Springs branch as their primary choice.

I hope that helps.

Congrats to all that have been accepted, for those that are waiting...its killing me too!

So perhaps I am overanalyzing as we are advised not to do, but I have questions about the Colorado Springs Branch.
I indicated CS as my first choice, and I remember that they had mentioned at the interview that there was more interest there than they had anticipated. I haven't heard anything since the interview which made me think that they might be waiting to accept those students until after all interviews. Has anyone been specifically accepted to the branch yet? If not, maybe that is part of the persistent silence for those of us that remain...just a thought

Hmm ps maybe this actually is killing me 😱 I realized that I have been so absorbed by this all day and looking at the schools web page that I forgot to eat...hmm oops haha

Unfortunately Dr. Wallace didn't mention if anyone had officially been accepted to the Springs branch or not. Sorry I can't provide any other insight to this.

:/ they told us indicating which location would not matter in our acceptance

Thanks for your thoughts! yes they did say that it wouldn't affect whether or not we are accepted, but now I am guessing it might affect when we are accepted. For those that they are honestly considering for the branch, I could imagine that they have already listed them as accepted to the school and awaiting further decision for which campus. It would make sense due to the few spots and high interest. Especially because they would likely be very focused on making the first class very qualified. But this is all speculation after all.
Haha but in attempts to alleviate the misery, I thought about how the time changes in a week! I thought, hey they have one less hour to make their decision from what I thought!!! Then I realized we gain an hour in the spring...aka they have a whole extra hour than I thought:smack: 😢 Its just an hour right? Whats an hour if at the end of the day you get accepted!!!

That is also what I heard during the interview day.

🙂 I think it wouldn't hurt if you took some time to watch some TV/play some candycrush/watch Frozen!/etc and get away from the waiting mindset. It will eat you alive.

Agree. Do all the stuff you wish you could do... And do it :3

I agree with what has been said above, refusing to relax will accelerate the aging process! That said, I am in the same boat as you so I understand. The ADCOM told us the branch placements are decided after the class has been selected and finalized; therefore, your branch selection has no weight on your admissions decision. As far as those who are admitted early, well they rocked the interview (that is, at least from what the ADCOM told us--I doubt they are 100% transparent regarding their process though). The rest of the applicants that didn't have a "near perfect" interview score are selected after the last interview day, this Friday, so there is a good chance we will start hearing next week.

Even though we might be hearing soon, I'd still recommend relaxing. For me, admission to CU would be the difference between med school this fall or applying next cycle. I highly encourage relaxing while the ball is in someone else's court. Personally, I'm going to spend some quality time playing Metro: Last Light. Frozen was pretty epic though!

Fortunately I have been doing just that, playing old video game favorites...zelda and such! Nostalgic and therapeutic! Will go see frozen too...finding nemo is a favorite

That sounds right though, and I know those that have been accepted rocked the interview- good job! So do we have a current count from facebook for those that have been accepted? What is our estimate on spots left? I ask this in no stress (relaxing a bit more now 🙂
We will know soon enough! Good luck everyone!
Ps for those that post, you should add what specialties you might be interested...i am thinking pediatrics or neurology

I received a call from the new Associate Dean of the CS Branch recently discussing the plan for the branch. We talked about a lot of the plans for the development of the rotations there, and it strikes me a pretty good opportunity for the cohort that attends. However, placements have not yet been set. I had indicated interest in the branch twice (once on the secondary and again at the interview or through a follow up email) and this preference did not seem to have been passed on. It's a brand new program (really T minus 2.5 years away from its first students), and I'm sure no small task, so I'd expect some confusion or outright changes on the horizon.

I like to imagine this is what happened for me. Thanks for the ego boost! 🙂

Last interview day was yesterday. I'm expecting more acceptances in 3, 2, 1 . . .
