2013-2014 University of Illinois Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For the LORs section what does Grad/Professional mean? I have a PI letter from a university I have never attended and wanted to know if it was even possible to include that letter. Thx

Congrats! and yea, I also got an II and had the same problem. They must not have posted the dates yet.

My stats are 35 MCAT, 3.87 GPA from a Chicago area uni. I sent in all my materials pretty early. Congrats to you, rfenzo!

Congrats to you as well! Has anyone figured out where the interview scheduling grid is located?

I got my interview notice today! 😀 Woo!

But when I logged in to look at available dates, it's still blank. Anyone else in the same boat?

Whoa! That was fast! Congrats, but yea tell us when you submitted your secondary?

My status states "awaiting review." Does that mean I am complete?

Yea they posted the dates earlier today on the appstat page and you have to call to schedule a date.

Did anyone else have problems accessing the secondary application? The link they emailed isn't loading.

Hey guys,
I'm an incoming M1 at UIC and am happy to answer questions about the application process. If you like, feel free to message me as I might not be checking the forums that often. Unfortunately (seeing as I haven't actually started school yet) I'm probably not the best person to answer some questions, but feel free to fire away.

Best of luck!

Edit: I'll be doing the UMed program and am happy to answer questions about the application process for that and what I know about it so far.

Do they send an email when they mark you complete? I'm not sure how to check my status...

they have a status page, but it really does not tell you much...I would give them a call

Anyone kind enough to share the secondary prompts, anyone?

more like... are these really the only prompts?

1. Describe a situation in which you were really stressed. Tell us how you dealt with it. Please detail your reaction(s), and how it affected you. If this situation, or a similar one, were to happen again, how would you handle it?
2. Describe a hobby or activity other than something in medicine, in which you have a keen interest. Why?

If you are not a full time student, you have to describe your current activities and employment (3,500 char.), and you have to describe any disadvantages or complications that affected your education (150 words), to which you can reply 'Not Applicable'.

Hey Guy quick question about the pre-requisites:

Do they accept AP Credit for the behavioral/ social science requirement?

Also:

I understand what they mean by complications but do you guy know any examples of advantages that would be worth talking about?

Thanks!

Yes they do accept AP credit for that requirement. They accepted my AP Psych anyway.

In terms of advantages, I imagine they're referring to assets that other students may not have like doctors in the family, UIC alumni, etc. For example, a friend from gradschool could've gone to the medschool of her choice bc of her dad's wealth and sports connections...
BUT! It seems like you can easily shoot yourself in the foot with that kind of answer...

Or experiences that might be advantageous for your study of medicine - like a masters degree in a hard science 👍

Thanks for all of your reponses guys!

Really appreciate it!

Also I've been hearing a lot about their UMed program, I went to their website. It looks pretty cool. I was wondering if being in the UMed program=getting a full scholarship?

I wish, but sadly this is not true. UMed students pay the same tuition. UMed does, however, add value to your experience in medical school and ultimately to your application for residencies.

Good luck everyone! I was accepted this last cycle. If you guys have any questions feel free to ask.

Can we send more than three LORs or is three the max? Also, do MD/PhD applicants get any additional prompts or is it all the same for everyone? Thanks

Congrats on the acceptance! I'd appreciate it if you could answer a few of my questions.

I'm not using my school's committee letter due to some circumstances and so I will only be sending separate letters. Do you how the UIC admissions committee view applicants without committee letters?

Also, can I send more than three individual LORs or is three the max?

Thanks!

First interview invite today! Completed 7/3. 3.8/32. Scheduled for 9/13. Hope to see some of you there!

This might be a dumb question, but has anyone had the status "awaiting admission officer letter review"? I've had it for over a week now, and they have all my LORs and everything else. Is that just the status they give you before the review your app?

Where can you see the status of your application? Is it the part at the bottom of the page when you log into the secondary?

After you log into the secondary you press "next" on the bottom of the page and it shows you the status of your application!

I'm certainly not the best qualified poster to answer to this but I got an II yesterday without a committee letter and with 5 individual letters.

For the U IL status, does applicant in progress mean that they are waiting for my application to be complete or that it is under review?

Page 2 of this thread has a flow chart that might help you out.

Where can you see the status of your application? Is it the part at the bottom of the page when you log into the secondary?

there is a separate site for checking your app. Should've gotten an email with the title "College of Medicine Admissions" that gave you the password you needed for the secondary. In that email they give you a link to the site where you can check your status: the link is http://services.comd.uic.edu/appstat

For the U IL status, does applicant in progress mean that they are waiting for my application to be complete or that it is under review?

according to an M1 from last year who posted on page 2:
"Application in Process" = You are complete.
"Applicant in Process" = Your file is being reviewed

replace process with progress and you get a decent idea

Thanks! Did you receive the email with this link immediately after submitting or a few days later? I didn't get any confirmation email or anything after I submitted my secondary a few days ago.

I got the email with the status check link a couple minutes before I got the secondary email.

i got an II but when i log onto my page i don't dont see where interview dates are? i clicked the application status button and i just see that every box is checked and it says my app was successfully submitted... where do i find interview dates at?

I have also had this status for about 5 days now. Any changes to yours?

For the EC section, did you guys put in clubs and such that you were members of but didn't play a large role in. Right now I only have employment, volunteer, and my leadership role. I cant decide if I should add shadowing and memberships.

Call the number in the email.

Interview dates are not on the status page on the secondary application. There is a link to the "appstat" status page in the initial email sent before the secondary.

I added 1 other organization and 1 entry on shadowing since I had room.

scheduled the interview and it's 5 hours long!?

can anyone who has interviewed give any feedback with regards to what goes on? is that all interviews or is there other stuff as well?

if you dont mind what are your stats and when were you complete?

as for your question i cant answer for sure, but from reading their interview page that SDN has (http://studentdoctor.net/schools/school/uic-med/survey/26#question_overflow_112) it looks like theres lunch involved, so im guessing its like a days worth or stuff but according to the data only about 1 hour of interviewing
