Top Five Ways to Go Blue
1) Invite me for an interview!
... the rest isn't important.

+1

On the other hand...the admissions tracker is updated! I'm relieved to see how many interview spots have still not been given out 😛

Also, I'm very impressed with whoever scored a 43

Haha yeah, I saw that 43 there the other day... crazy! Their average MCAT and GPA figures for interview invites can also only be described as crazy.

Edit: for anyone who doesn't feel like looking it up, the average "Interview Offered" stats are as follows:
IS: 3.85 GPA, 37 MCAT -- 60/200 interviews offered.
OOS: 3.85 GPA, 38 MCAT -- 191/375 interviews offered.

Surprised nobody has review the interview day on Friday, so here it goes.

Themes throughout the day: transparency, flexibility, innovation.

As an Ohio-Stater, I didn't know what to expect for this interview. However, Dean Gay and Director Ruiz really were welcoming and broke the ice right at the beginning of the interview day. The admissions department as a whole is really fantastic, welcoming, and open/approachable.

One impressive thing Dr. Ruiz mentioned was how UMich is really pushing for a more holistic review process. He said that by the time UMich has made a decision on your file, around 10-20 people have given input on your level of fit for UMich. They're all about making sure they have a diverse class composed of people from different skill-sets and socio/cultural/economic backgrounds, and this showed in the candidates.

The candidates were impressive and, I believe because of the openness fostered by the admissions team, very open to candid conversation. I actually FB-befriended a bunch of people who I met.

One thing that's new this year is the un-tour. We split up into groups of 10, each led by two current med students, and "un-toured" various clinical settings. My group was slated to see OBGYN, so we watched a simulated childbirth. The attendings in the room who walked us through the demonstration were all very sociable and had strong ties to UMich.

Overall, UMich made a strong and friendly impression on me that I think will go a long way.

Hope you all find this helpful. Feel free to PM me with other questions.

So.....no 10:10 Tuesday then? 🙁

Twitter: "Expecting to make nearly 3 dozen interview offers today-fairly evenly split between R/NR-This is a great applicant pool! "

STILL under review. Darn. Does R/NR mean rural/non rural? Or some other fancy acronym?

II for U of M 🙂 Found out via the application tracker in the middle of a quiet library and had to silently hug myself to keep from crying. I love this school so much 🙂 They are scheduling interviews for 10/18 and 10/25.

I was complete 8/21. IS.

Stats:

MCAT 32+
GPA 3.8+

+2 🙁

Everytime I look at the app tracker, I feel like I'm pursuing a crush but the crush just keeps friend-zoning me and all I can think is "Why won't you love me?!" 😛

Congrats!!

Don't lose hope! They haven't even accepted anyone yet! It's very early in the game 🙂 Wishing everyone the best on their apps!

does anyone know if later applications have been successful at umich ? I submitted my secondary yesterday and everything else is in.

according to the app, they still haven't acknowledged receiving my secondary yet though...

I'm a bit tight at the moment and I was just wondering--if I fly in the day before, would it be possible to fly out the day of my interview? I just don't want to have to pay for another night's hotel fee. =( I'm just worried it'll look bad if I'm taking my luggage with me to interview day, however. Are there any storage areas? Should I just grit my teeth and pay for the extra night? Thanks so much for any advice!

Most everyone left the day of the interview -- only a few people stayed to watch the game the next day. You can leave your luggage in a designated office and it wouldn't be weird at all to bring your suitcase with you.

Haven't posted yet on this forum, but I'm II here as of yesterday evening! 😀 I was really surprised, as I didn't complete the secondary until last Friday.

Who else is going to Ann Arbor on 10/25?

Surprised they offered an interview to a lower-class Spartan. :meanie:

(Just kidding ... I'm just jelly ... Congrats tho! 😀)

After being invited to an interview does your acceptance rely heavily on your interview performance? Also after an II do grades necessarily matter?

We were told review of your file is comprehensive, even after the interview. The director gave the example of someone with a mediocre interview being accepted over someone who had a stellar one because of how the rest of their applications stacked up not only to each other but also to the class they were trying to build as a whole. The often used analogy on SDN is the ladder analogy, where one's application/secondary/LORs place an applicant at a certain rung on the ladder and the interview can move someone up, down, or keep them at the same place. Ultimately, at the end of all this, those higher on the ladder will be accepted over others. This "ranking system" was very similar to how they explained their process to us. So yes, the interview is a big part of your application, but it is still *one* component; I don't think it will make or break most applicants. It was noted in our information session that one negative review won't tank your application. Obviously one negative review and a host of other smaller reasons might become costly, but they do try to make the process as unbiased as possible by soliciting input from a host of qualified people -- I seem to remember 10 to 15, but someone can correct me.

I don't know the answer to your second question, but I imagine they matter in as much as they mattered even before the II.

Loved interview day as well.
21 days, 13 hours, 48 minutes to 12:01 am on October 15th 😛

Twitter update: It’s another 10:10 Tuesday. We’ll make about a dozen interview offers this morning #GoBlueMed

Has anyone's file been closed here yet? Just wondering if I've been on review for ~10-12 weeks because I have any remote shot at all or if that's how UM does in general.

According to their twitter and some friends I have at UoM, they have been closing files. I was put on hold last week, 10 weeks after completion. Although with the way they are filling interview spots, a hold is effectively a rejection :/

sorry to hear that... did you hear about the hold status via email?

Email that said I had a status change. The UoM account then had a message that read to the effect of: "Your file has been reviewed. While your file is still under consideration, we cannot offer you an interview at this time. Your file is open to further review and we will contact you by February as to the status of your file."

I see.. sounds like a hold.. but you never know! I've been "under review" since early July... so...

Recent tweets:

9/25: Admission team doing final prep for today's AEC meeting - we'll review candidates who interviewed 9/6 and 9/13 today!
9/25: First AEC meeting of the year finished early! A good slate of candidates resulted in many positive outcomes-more detailed stats to come!
9/27: I'll have outcomes information (% Accepted, etc.) from our first AEC meeting later today! #gobluemed

Here's to hoping they accept 100% of those who interviewed on 9/6 and 9/13
😛

I'll post their more detailed tweet when it becomes available.

Here it is: @UMichMedAdmiss: Outcomes from the 9/6 & 9/13 Interview Days: 72% Accepted-20% Waitlisted-8%Defer-Will post these individual decisions on October 15

There were 40 people on the my (the first) interview day. Assuming 40 were interviewed on the second interview day, there were 58/80 accepted, 16/80 waitlisted, and 6 deferred.

Here's their analogous post from last year:

10/4/2012: Outcomes from 9/7 and 9/14 interview dates: 65% Accept-10% Defer-25% Waitlist-0% Reject.

Michigan has not accepted anyone from the waitlist in the last 4 years.

Hope you all find this information helpful!

Hey guys, I'm just wondering if anyone else here has received a follow up email from UofM reminding you to complete your secondary. I decided to not even bother with my UofM secondary after my less than stellar MCAT performance a month and a half ago (which I still don't know how I managed to score SO much lower than my average), but just received an email from them reminding me that I still have not completed my secondary.

Is this just an automated email, or does no one know here because you've all already completed your secondary haha

I would assume it's automated, but I don't know for sure. Sorry that you are disappointed with your score 😳

Incredible numbers! Here's to hoping we fall under that 72%!!!!!! :xf:

I also received the e-mail and I am wondering the same thing. I was already planning to submit the secondary, but was perfecting my essay responses. I have a feeling it is an automated e-mail sent if you have not submitted a secondary for a certain period of time after U of M received your primary (anecdotally sometime more than 2 weeks) Perhaps, they will clarify this on the twitter. Any adcom or students able to chime in on this?

Once again, UMich plays my life with another "learn more" / "tweet chat" email. Had a mini conniption just now.
