Hi umms2017!

I just wanted to let you know that there was a slight mistake on the tracker...WashU is listed twice in the "accepted" column. I didn't know if you wanted to notify Mr. Ruiz about this so he could change it. It's probably not a big deal though.

Thanks for the heads up! Based on the interview count, I'd assume one of those is supposed to be for Harvard alumni. It'll be changed by the time the next tracker is released, if not sooner! I'll let Director Ruiz know this week.

got rejected pre-interview today.

I've been accepted to 9 other programs, your loss. Your secondary fee just brought hell upon whatever UM grads I'll see as an attending.

just kidding. or am i?
Given your 9 acceptances, you should take your energy out on grads from the 8 schools that made you fly to interview (+/- revisit weekends) even though you don't end up matriculating to them -- much more costly than a secondary fee! Congrats on an otherwise successful cycle. Remember, you only need one acceptance, and many people don't even get that far, so be grateful for your success and try not to treat the application process as a game to rack up a high score.

From Twitter: "We are making a few interview offers today as a part of our plan to make all interview offers by 1/24/2014."

Good luck to those still waiting. 🙂 Rooting for you all!

I wanna go here. If I get in on 2/15 then I'm matriculating and that's final.

But...I think my interviews went just OK. So I'm probably toast.

The end.

I was accepted, my thought was one great, one that was fine, and one I was definitely a little worried about.

Sometimes, your perception can be skewed--especially when you are anxious or nervous. 🙂 You never know! Rooting for you, dude.

Good to know.. I am in the same boat. I had one fantastic interview, one that was just ok, and one where I got more than a couple strange looks.

Above all else I think I was too nervous to sell myself properly... Hopefully whoever presents my application to the committee does a better job than I did at pointing out what I'd bring to the class.

Best wishes to you on becoming a new Wolverine. Are you OOS or IS??

Hi Everyone! I will be interviewing on Feb 7th. Do you have any tips for the interview day? Any comments on the interviews?

3 interviews back-to-back, 30 minutes each, open file except for grades/MCAT scores. Consensus based on survey data is that for the most part everyone has really enjoyed the interviews! Check out the interview day website if you haven't already, which has a lot more useful info: http://www.med.umich.edu/medschool/interview/

UMMS is one of the only med schools that has alumni conduct interviews (sample size- my interview trail 2012-13), as well as faculty and M2-M4 students (you might not have one of each, it might end up 2/1/0 in any possible mix). You won't find out until the morning of if you'll be interviewing with an alum, but when preparing, think of questions to ask potential alumni interviewers about their experience as a medical student here, since the students will still be in it and the faculty might have attended a different medical school.

You'll have a session with the Admissions team while the other half of the group is interviewing, followed by lunch with a ton of students and a clinical experience with faculty in the afternoon. Very relaxed day overall; always a fun time for the interviewees and the med students!

Send our account a PM if you have any further questions about anything, and we will see you in ~2 weeks!

Thank you, this is very helpful! Very excited to visit!

Interview Day outcomes for MD candidates:

1/10: 52% Admit-13% Defer-35% Waitlist.

1/17: 68% Admit-6% Defer-26% Waitlist.

See? Michigan really does admit pretty equally throughout the application cycle. I am a little excited and a little scared to know a decision has been made upon my application. I am slightly disappointed that I'm going to have to wait another ~17 days to find out, but I'll put on my brave face and tough it out.

do you know how many people interviewed on your day?

Nope. Most interview days have between 30 and 40 interviewees, I believe.
Picture profile says 35!

If there are 300 acceptance offers already, then another 14 from 1/10 and 24 from 1/17, they might be planning to exceed the target of 350, since that's 338 already. People interviewing on the final date probably shouldn't expect a 68% acceptance rate, but it'll definitely be at least 35-40%.

My M1 class has 10-15 people who deferred for a year, while only ~5 accepted students last year are taking a year off and joining the 2014 incoming class, so that might explain why they have room to go above target cap.

1/17 was an MSTP day, and the outcomes indicated are only for MD candidates. You gotta correct for that.

Good call! In that case, there are several more spots than noted in my above post. Thanks for the clarification!

What is the difference between Defer and Waitlist? I have a cousin who was deferred initially in November to December and then to March. Does he stand any chance at all? Appreciate feedback

The waitlist is a final decision.. the application won't be reviewed anymore unless they can't fill the class with accepted applicants. The chance of being taken off the waitlist is very rare and hasn't happened in the last 3+ years if I remember correctly.

Deferring is a postponement of a decision... it's more of a "we'll tell you later, we're not sure yet." The application will be reviewed again in December or March and then reevaluated for a final decision of acceptance or waitlist. I recommend checking out this flow chart on the admission website:

Adding to the above post, a fair number of applicants who have been deferred will generally be accepted during the December & March update waves, given that it's a fairly small pool of candidates (ballpark ~10% of interviewees, so not more than ~60 people). However, with the already high # of acceptance offers made this cycle, I don't imagine them realistically accepting too many from the deferred applicant group in March (no insider information, purely based on the reported numbers). If he is still strongly interested in Michigan, he should definitely send an update/interest letter via the status page, and good news might roll around in the coming weeks. Best of luck!

Got the email for second look. Is the dress code casual?? Didn't see a reference to this in the email.

Hm. Still don't have it. I got a call about it yesterday from a student so I know I should getthe email today. Maybe it's in spam. I just wanted to register today. Oh well! Will just have to be patient and wait. 🙂

Don't wait too long, as the email has a registration link. Maybe send Sandy Davis an email!!

Dress code is more formal (business casual) for Thursday (Diversity & Health Equity) and Friday, but Saturday is casual.

Also, for admitted students, feel free to post questions on the Facebook group since more people, including Admissions staff, can field questions; don't be shy! If you haven't already joined, lots of great info is going up fairly frequently -- there's a link on the status page.

If you haven't received the invite email, you can definitely still sign up through the registration website (there's a Sign Up tab on the left)
http://www.med.umich.edu/medschool/admissions/weekend/index.html

Check in with Admissions and/or check your spam folder to make sure the email wasn't filtered by mistake, but all admitted students can register starting today!

Got my e-mail! As suspected, it was in the spam folder. Signed up for second look. See some of you there! 🙂

If the January interview dates are supposed to get status updates no matter what on 2/15, when do you think the acceptance e-mails will go out? I have heard it is often earlier than the date that the rest of the status updates are sent out.

This was just posted on twitter:

M.D. Candidates who interviewed in January will get decisions via status page on Wednesday (Feb. 12) at 12:12 p.m. #GoBlueMed
8:45am - 10 Feb 14

Yeah I saw that. So I guess we'll all find out at the same time :]

Decisions should be up now! Good luck to everyone.

I wonder why decisions came out 4 days early....has this typically happened?

I know that financial aid doesn't get back until after March 31st--but does that mean we have to wait until that late to hear about scholarship and grant offers?

From what I've collected (as a fellow applicant), only recruiting scholarships can come out earlier.

Yea, I think they said March 21 was when they would announce scholarships. (merit based)

The merit scholarship award determination process is independent of the need-based financial aid determination process, so all ~350 students are in the running for the former without the submission of any paperwork. On March 21, all recipients of merit scholarships will be notified (and, as admitted students may withdraw their place in the class starting April 1, merit scholarships may be recycled to additional students in another round in April/May, depending on anticipated yield, etc). Need-based scholarships ("grants") and other institutional/federal financial aid will be determined during March & April, and everyone should get a complete financial aid package by mid-April I believe, assuming all deadlines are met. Try to get everything in as early as possible to expedite the process. You'll still have a few weeks prior to May 15 to evaluate your financial situation between UMMS and other places you may be considering, but promptness and patience is definitely key in this final step of the application process.

Got a Status of death in December, surprise interview in January, interviewed with the last interview group of the season and received an offer today. That being said, 60% of my interview group was accepted as well, so to all you guys applying next year and don't hear for a long time, don't lose hope.
