2013-2014 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Application Thread

II today!! First one of the cycle which sucks, but nevertheless I am beyond excited. My only concern is the residency question. I was recently denied in-state residency for my graduate school program in Florida...and since I've only ever lived in North Carolina until this year while attending graduate school, I can only assume that i'm still considered a NC resident? I mean if I'm denied residency here, I have to be a resident somewhere?

Unfortunately, you can be left without state residency anywhere if you don't satisfy the requirements of residency for any state. Review the information here to make sure you satisfy the requirements for NC residency. You can also call the university to discuss the details of your situation. It is easy to lose NC residency and hard to reestablish it.

Source: I had to reestablish residency a few years ago after leaving the state for awhile.

Well that sucks. Now that I've gotten an interview though, I wonder if it matters for my consideration. The difference in tuition doesn't really matter to me as I'm applying through the Navy's HPSP. I'll give them a call today. Thanks for your input.

I think if you applied as in-state and you got an interview, your residency status is no longer an issue as it pertains to your admissions consideration (since interviews are the heavily screened part for OOS students). However, it could definitely affect your tuition if you are accepted.

Serious question then: What is to stop anyone from just putting NC as their state of residence on AMCAS just to increase their chances of admission? Or do they ever actually verify residency for admissions (not just tuition) purposes?

My guess is if they later determine you intentionally lied about your residency status to leverage your chances, you'd be subject to having the offer revoked.

Well it's possible this year might be an anomaly where that is concerned, considering the residency forms weren't available until late.

Does everyone who has been verified as an NC resident go to NC schools? I don't and haven't heard back yet

I didn't go to an NC school and haven't heard back either. I've only been an NC resident for a short while.

I got my verification e-mail today and attend college out of state as well.

Well hopefully mine won't be a problem then. I lived in NC my entire life and attended undergrad there at Wake Forest. I only went to USF because, at the time, I didn't see a graduate program I needed at any of the NC schools and my wife's family lives in Florida so that's where we looked.

I can't give you a 100% guarantee answer, but it honestly sounds like you will more than easily qualify as an NC resident, especially if you're able to provide copies of documents like a NC driver's license, NC high school diploma etc.

I went to school out of state and have been an official NC resident less than two years. Interviewed in November and am waiting to hear back.

EDIT: Whoops, just realized people are talking about verification for tuition, not for just interview purposes. Haven't heard back about tuition stuff yet...but from the way they were talking at the interview, it seems like as long as you've been in-state for 1 year, they're not too hard on you, as OOS applicants often get IS tuition after the first year.

I haven't done my in-state verification yet....does anyone know what the deadline on this is? I was accepted in October. I should probably get on this. :scared:

Correct me if I'm wrong, fellow UNC applicants, but I don't think there is a specific due date (though I'm sure it has to be in by late spring for financial aid purposes). I'd just do it ASAP, they have a lot of them to sort through!

We pretty much thinking they will meet Monday?

Though Monday is just a countdown to 6pm, which is a letdown because then it's 8 and chances of a call that late are slim, so then it's a countdown to Thursday or Friday due to mail possibilities, which is a letdown because then it's the weekend again...

For those accepted tonight, if it's not too much trouble, can you guys also post when you guys interviewed? Much appreciated.

Hmmm... How bizarre. Maybe some calls will go out tomorrow? Or acceptance letters later in the week?

One of my friends got in tonight. They interviewed mid November and had Dr. Gilliland.

At least there's a new episode of Archer to ease my disappointment.

Has anyone with Dr. Slatkoff heard anything?

Or Dr. Ursano? I haven't seen anyone else even mention they had her.

It seems like not too many people who interviewed in November have heard yet. I was the week of Thanksgiving (saw one person say they heard back quickly who was there that week...but then no one else has said anything).

Did anyone interview with Dr. Houpt? Have any of you heard anything who interviewed with him?

I wonder if UNC puts a lot of people on the unofficial hold and accepts in bulk toward the end?

Some of the other NC schools have offered less than 50 acceptances so far...

Actually the wake forest thread reported 53 offers back in december, so it might be past 60 by now. I'm not too sure for ECU or duke though. But then again, I really only care about chapel hill

I got in! JUST got a call from Dr. Slatkoff my interviewer! I have low GPA 3.2 and avg MCAT 31 and I interviewed in Sept 25th. I know I have low stats; I praise God for still giving me a chance!

Everyone good luck!!!

Congrats! I interviewed with Dr. Slatkoff in September as well, so I'm hoping I still have a chance.

Wow, congrats! Your personality and EC's must've made a great impression 🙂

I had Dr. Ursano. I interviewed mid October and thought my interview went very well, but no news yet. Guess there's nothing to do besides keep waiting and hoping for good news.

Anyone have any input on this? UNC is my top choice and I'd do anything to show them how badly I want to attend, but I read a discussion about e-mailing your interviewer in one of the previous years threads and there seemed to be mixed opinions on if it would be helpful or not and whether or not it was appropriate to directly contact your interviewer.

Also, congrats leehj1! Seems like it definitely worked out for the best in your case!
