2013-2014 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you! I also live in Chapel Hill, so if I NEVER EVER want to leave home again, that is now a possibility haha. My interview day was kind of crazy - during one, I saved the day by bravely squishing a spider in the corner (the faculty member was NOT a fan of spiders) & spent half of it talking about baking cakes haha. I like to think my heroism won the day.
That's awesome! I'm also from Chapel Hill, and I remember one of my interviewers seemed to like that fact since she pointed out to me that it was often good to have a support network of family in the area. Here's hoping she liked me!

If it doesn't explicitly help, it definitely doesn't hurt, especially as in state. It may have also helped that I went to undergrad outside of NC and the south. Honestly who knows? If you had fun during interviews or they were at least pleasant yet challenging, I would be feeling good about it. Good luck!!

Im 10 weeks out from interview and thinking about writing another interest letter to my interviewer on the adcom. I sent a thank you letter directly following the interview, so I dont know how helpful this will be. Thoughts?

This topic was discussed earlier in this thread. The general consensus seemed to be that unless your adcom explicitly told you to contact them with any questions, or left their contact info with you (i.e. you didn't have to look up their email address), it's generally best to just be patient and wait. I personally doubt it'll hurt to send them an interest letter, but it may come off as being a little intrusive, especially since UNC tells you explicitly not to send in updates.

So much for do no harm 😉

I'm not really sure it would help anything. It is not uncommon to wait 10 plus weeks for a decision, so it may just come across as being pushy. When other people from the thread have sent interest letters or inquiries it seems like the advice is to be patient. I know I have been waiting for 13 weeks and it is pretty rough, but hopefully we will hear good news soon!

Womp womp :\ pre-interview rejection. OOS complete early September

Do any current UNC students have a sense of the housing market for students? At my undergrad people usully signed their lease the preceding fall, so I'm getting a little edgy as we enter February and there's no information about roommate listings. They said we could ask at second look day, but is March 29 getting sort of late for fall housing near UNC?

(I guess on that note, anyone looking for a semi-vegetarian roommate who owns two parakeets and does the dishes promptly? I come with a nice rice cooker.)

any asian girl (or any girl that doesnt mind the smell of korean food) looking for a roommate near unc...?

I am not up to date with on-campus deadlines, but for off-campus apartments (still relatively close) they usually have some spots open well into March and April. 🙂 I wouldn't get too stressed over it. I'm sure there will be on-campus apartments available as well for incoming graduate students, but I'm not 100%.

Worst case scenario: Mom n Pop live a half hour away.

So what is the community stance on updating the admissions office regarding developments that may be deemed relevant to your application. Since interviewing, I started a new job working at a hospital. This may or may not be relevant to the adcom, Im not sure. But I was hoping I could at least use it as semi-legitimate excuse to call the admissions office and talk to them about the status of my application. Thoughts?

I think the consensus is that it should be avoided... UNC specifically asks for applicants not to send updates on current activities. But I think they would be more than happy to answer your questions if you wanted to call them.

anybody know how full the unc class is by now? seems like most schools, including ecu, are about half full...

I'd say at least 75% full by now. There's only 3 committee meetings left (2 in February and 1 in march), and then after that it's rejected/waitlisted.

I was about to ask this haha. Does anyone know that stats on people getting in that interview in February? I would imagine since there are only a few committee meetings after their interviews, it would be a lot less likely than others? Or since they're interviews are later, they're more fresh during the committee meetings? I wasn't sure if anyone might have an idea on this topic?

This is purely speculation (and heavily biased by the fact that I want to be accepted), but I feel like logically, if you've been reviewed this many times without being flat-out rejected, then you stand a better chance then the latest applicants who are about as competitive as you. If a late applicant is a clear stand-out, then there's no reason why they wouldn't get an acceptance quickly. But if you have two similarly competitive applicants for one spot, but one interviewed much earlier and the committee has repeatedly decided not to reject him/her, then the earlier applicant would probably have a better chance simply because the committee has had more time to think about that applicant's potential as a student. Again, this is purely speculation, but I doubt medical school admissions love making last minute clutch decisions without much deliberation.

I really, really want that to be true!

Me too, but there's been far too little post interview rejections so far, so I feel like the majority of people won't get rejected/waitlisted until april/may time-frame. Thus I think people who interview late is on the same standing as people who interviewed early.

Now if there's been tons of post interview rejections, then that means people who haven't been cut are probably much stronger applicants. It really depends on the number of post interview rejections.

True, but we also don't know how many post-interview rejections have been given. We are only assuming that not many have been given based on the limited responses we've seen on this thread. Personally, I feel that more people would be willing to create an account to post that they've been accepted rather than rejected.

Anecdotal, but I don't know of anyone who has been WLed or Rejected post-interview (I only know >20 interviewees outside of SDN), but I know quite a few acceptances.

I think that it is far from over, but I don't think that they've gotten around to rejecting and WLing people.

It's not over til the fat lady sings! Also, I know a couple people accepted to both ECU and UNC so they'll free a spot up for someone at some point.

Tuesday, February 11th, AMCAS alerts med schools where their applicants have been accepted thus far. At least this is what I heard from my Pre-Med advisor. I can't find it online, but if this is true this could really change the game for those of us who have been accepted at other schools. I am interested to see how this affects decisions from UNC.

Can someone join and tell us how many have joined?

There are 37 members...but none of the people I know personally who have been accepted have joined it. It appears to be run by students not administrators, so it is far from an accurate number of people who have been accepted. I presume it's done by word of mouth and not officially.

I mean, there are 37 members. But I know a few of those people are not first years, and one of them isn't even a med student. Lol

No...those of us starting in 2014 will be graduating in the spring of 2018

MS1 2014-2015
MS2 2015-2016
MS3 2016-2017
MS4 2017-2018

Alright, well either way there aren't only accepted students for this year on there. I know three members personally and they're M1s/M2s, but maybe they join to answer questions. Though one member interviewed the same day I did... IDK, I guess I'll join since the deposit is in.

Go for it 👍 I'm not joining until I get an email from a UNC admin saying "join this official group" haha

OK so joined the group and looked at a bunch of the member pages - most are current UNCSOM students, but it is meant as an accepted students page. There's only one post from an accepted medical student, one post from an accepted dental student looking for a roommate. The rest (so far) are current students looking for roommates or travel partners.

So in other words trying to use that page to estimate the number of current accepted students is almost completely futile.

Exactly. If that were my gauge, less than 10-15 have been accepted, and we know that ain't the case haha

As far as I know only that many people have been accepted. This thread is the only source of news I get on UNC. I am pretty sure I am the only person at Auburn to even apply to UNC. haha

Fingers crossed for good news. Need to find out so I can put my house on the market. This wait is so stressful!

Are post interview rejections only through email? Or are they also through snail mail?

Well it looks like I won't be getting the call tonight. Here's to waiting for the next two weeks...

Anyone get good news tonight?

Not to get anyone's hopes up, but it really doesn't seem uncommon for them to either call you sometime later in the week, or not call you at all.
My point is that it ain't over til it's Friday.
