2013-2014 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Not to get anyone's hopes up, but it really doesn't seem uncommon for them to either call you sometime later in the week, or not call you at all.
My point is that it ain't over til it's Friday.

True...but not to be that pessimistic guy here, but there are only 2 more committee meetings left before waitlists/rejections go out.

Wasn't it one? Oops?

Is it true that they can see where other applicants were already accepted? (Wishful thinking) Give the rest of us a chance!

I think they have one on 2/24 and one more the second week of March.. Do we know that they actually met last night? I know SDN is a small subset of the entire applicant population, but I haven't heard of anyone getting accepted last night..

Accepted!!!! I got the call last night around 9pm. They sure made me wait a long time for this call because I interviewed on Oct 9th. In case you all are curious, IS 3.9, 32. Good luck to all of you!
Congrats! It makes me feel better about my 15-week wait. Mind sharing who your adcom was?

Did you apply MSTP or MD?

Congratulations!

Does anyone know of any Class of 2018 facebook group or anything like that?

🙁 Considering I'm sitting under a foot of snow with the rest of NC...Stalking the USPS lady is probably out of question? (If they aren't spending their snow day making calls *hint hint* those letters won't be coming anytime soon.)

Debbie Dower Signing Off :arghh:

I had to (literally) walk three miles uphill in the snow to get home from the hospital today (no buses), so you can safely assume that the admissions office won't be in until Friday at the earliest. Offices have been closed for tomorrow.

Congrats, I interviewed the 8th. Good to know they're still reviewing us!

Interviewed here recently and absolutely loved it. Joni informed us that there were still plenty of spots available in the class and that people "should" know come mid-March. Acceptances are generally phone calls while everything else is email.

This is good news! Thanks!

Well then, they won't mind giving the "waiters" some of those plentiful spots? Haha

Is that the general consensus? I started looking at the trend last year. Just trying to figure out what the latest some of us early interviewers might hear. We thinking some sort of decision by end of March at the very least? I wonder if I should be brave and call....

Last year, I got the rejection email on April 3rd, after they had sent out the last Monday night acceptances on March 18. The way the calendar looks this year, they probably have a meeting on March 10th or March 17th, and my guess is that rejections and wait lists will go out a couple of weeks after that. That would put us right at the end of March or first week of April.

Is March 10th the next time they meet or will they meet before then?

Do they really say exactly when they're meeting?
No, but it's not a hard deduction. We know that they meet on Mondays (Learned that from SDN), and we know that they meet on alternating weeks (learned that from Joni), and we know which Mondays they meet based on when people post acceptances on this thread (SDN, again).

Personally I expect 2 more committee meetings, and I think that in theory, they should accept more people on the last possible meeting than they usually do in other meetings.

They send the packets out on Monday. I found out right after business hours the Friday before they send anything in the mail via phone, so meetings would be Friday. SDN isn't great for detective work on exact dates, and it just seems to give people near heart attacks haha

This is a ridiculous question, but I'll try anyway. Does anyone have an average response time after the interview?

To take with a grain of salt. This is what I have gathered from advisors, books, and former students: Within the 8 week time frame a minority of people are either rejected or accepted. The majority of applicants fall somewhere in the middle and are constantly re-reviewed throughout the interview cycle. The final decision on these applicants is made in mid March after all interviews are completed and AAMC requires schools to have given out a number of acceptances equal to the number of seats available in the class (see Traffic Rules for admissions committees on AAMC's website). Most schools like UNC typically offer no more acceptances than seats as there is a large retention rate in acceptances. It is very costly to miscalculate and overfill a class. Only after a declined offer is there waitlist movement. Typically there are about 10 students that are accepted after getting waitlisted at UNC. This movement usually happens around decision day, May 15th. Hope this answers some questions.

Great answer. Thanks!!

I interviewed 1/28. An acquaintance of mine interviewed the same day. Acquaintance just received acceptance. It hasn't even been that long, but damn...I just...damn. Put me out of my misery!

Dang that is fast. Did they hear back today or last week sometime?

Not to be a downer, but hearing how everyone and their cats are getting accepted makes me super depressed.

🙁 I looked at the thread from last year and the committee did not meet at the end of February for some reason... I wonder if they met tonight?
I asked a friend of mine (student interviewer) last week the same question and he informed me that the admissions committee is taking a hiatus to finish the interviews. Thus, they didn't meet tonight. I believe that the last interviews will be finished this week. Good Luck to everyone that is still waiting for a decision!

Thank you! This is very useful news.
