2013-2014 University of Rochester Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Could you elaborate on this HPWL?
For at least the past two years on April 4th (if you look in the previous years' threads) there was an email sent by Dr. Hansen to a select few to tell them that they were in the Top Tier or on the HPWL (High Priority Wait List) and that their acceptance was pretty much guarenteed. All of the SDNers who received this email were accepted later on.

I just received an email from Rochester that must be the High Priority Wait List that pinkyandthebrain is talking about. The email says "Currently, our list of accepted applicants is over-subscribed. However, I am sending this email to inform you that you currently are in the top tier of Rochester's Wait List. If our admissions process unfolds as in past years, I fully expect that you will be offered an acceptance into the Class of 2018, and should hear from us by mid-May."

Yep. That is totally it. Now I just have fingers crossed that mine is on its way!

Hopefully I didn't make you stress to bad! I was just adding the information to help everyone know the most recent news from Rochester. Best of luck to you!

Well seeing as I didn't get it (yet, hopefully!) I am pretty stressed out.

That's awesome Runningdude. Looks like you're getting into Rochester.

Happy Friday all 🙂 long time lurker and another HPWL-er here very interested in hearing how the Second Look today goes for everyone! Would love to hear some feedback and impressions when you all get home!

Not on the HPWL but I'm still hopeful to get off regular wait list. Although, I hear that it is basically a no at this point....

I Really have to give Rochester a lot of credit for putting on a great second look last week. Could definitely see myself there in a few months

You had a good revisit? Care to elaborate a little? I unfortunately couldn't make it.

The revisit was great. We had a lecture from Dr. J (apparently a big fish in neurology) then a short anatomy lab and an interesting PBL. There was a student interest group fair, and a QandA with current 4th years, and a housing tour, and a night out at the bar that was a lot of fun. Meeting my future classmates was the best part--it seems like a fantastic group of people, and the current students were really cool too.

We were also told that financial aid info would be sent out during the week of the 21st, assuming that you sent in all your paperwork in a timely manner.

If you have any more specific questions let me know!

Basically this. I felt a great connection and companionship with the people I met, especially compared to other schools I have seen. I think it's a good sign when a school can let its students speak for it!

released my seat yesterday, I hope that it goes to one of you!!

Is the general consensus that we would be hearing back about aid this week?

Hello All,

This is the first time I am posting on SDN but I figured I should also advertise on here.
I am decided on coming to Rochester this fall and I found a potential house in the White Coat area on Crittenden street (right across from Strong/school) but the realtors prefer to rent the house in it's entirety as opposed to each individual rooms separately. It is a 4 bedroom 2.5 baths. So I would need 3 other roommates. The house looks really nice. If anyone is interested please reply or send send me an email at [email protected].

I was told that financial aid would come this week.
So far, I haven't received anything. Has anyone else? I think Imma send an email.

I was really hoping... nothing yet. PM if you find anything out!!!

I'm assuming they will all go out at once, or in close proximity to each other. Probably too late this for this week, but I'd be surprised if we didn't hear something next week. Really excited.

Mailing the packages...well that changes everything.

Thank you so much, I can relax 🙂

I received my package in the mail. Not quite what I expected... Anyone else get theirs yet?

Hey HeadEast2014! I got mine in the mail yesterday as well. I have a lot of need but my package is still really generous. At other schools, I'll probably have to take out $40K this year in loans but at Roch, I'll only need $30K. They threw in about $40K of scholarships and prizes.

Maybe HeadEast2014 and astern could speak to this from revisit - but I'm still a little unsure of exactly how the M1 / M2 pre-clinical is set up...i.e. are lectures still not recorded / mandatory? How much time do they spend in lecture vs. PBL vs. anatomy every day? And are students happy with this in general - especially M4s looking back on it? How about with how clerkships are assigned? I know I have info on grading and class ranking somewhere, but if you could comment on how that was done again (P/F vs. H/P/F with internal ranking...which I'm assuming given AOA availability?) and general student satisfaction with that I'd really appreciate it! Feel free to PM me if easier, too.

From what I gathered lectures are still not recorded but not mandatory. Only small group sessions in ICM, PBLs, and anatomy labs are mandatory. Lectures are generally from 8-12 with small group sessions in the afternoon but sometimes PBL can be in the mornings too. M, W, F are the longer days. The M4 at my lunch group and other M1s stated that they were happy with the diversity in how the material is taught (i.e what is taught in lecture gets reinforced in PBL, lab, and small group sessions).

Hey--
So I was similarly concerned about the unrecorded classes. I basically assumed that meant that classes were, while not explicitly, mandatory. My host immediately dispelled that myth by letting me know that he frequently misses 2-3 classes a week, and that by the winter time of M1, only about half the class shows up anyway (which seemed true regardless of medical school). It seems the notes are thorough and complete enough that classes can be missed every now and again.

Zenosticks answered about the amount of time dedicated to each part of the curriculum, but I would add that very quickly in your medical school career you start on the primary care clerkship which is taught over the second half of M1 and all of M2, basically leading to M-F being fairly full days of class and/or clinic. The impression that I got was that, while it is a lot of work, it is not by any means overwhelming/untenable and the benefits are noticeable when M3 comes around.

All lecture courses are P/F the first two years, while PCC (primary care clerkship) is H/P/F I believe. I also was told that Rochester uses a pure P/F system. That is, every students' first two years are summed up in one sentence on every residency application recommendation letter: "DressageDoc passed all of her/his preclinical courses at Rochester Medical School" or something to that effect.

Rochester set itself apart from other schools in the community of its students. As opposed to schools in NYC or other cities, I felt Rochester's dynamic was very focused on getting to know each other and building relationships within a class. I got that feeling from the M4 panel and from the M1s I stayed with and from everyone else I interacted with that weekend. Maybe it is because they draw heavily from liberal arts schools or because they are kind of isolated out there or because they all go to class first semester (so know each other very well), all I know is that I really felt comfortable there.

**Disclaimer here that I may have recollected some things incorrectly. Hope it helps!

These are all fantastic - thanks guys, really appreciate the info! Seriously leaning in this direction now.

Just to add to the info. I got my package as well and it was pretty generous. Very similar to winterchill's package actually.

Withdrew yesterday--such a tough decision! Good luck to everyone on the WL!

Has anyone gotten in off of the regular wait list? Any idea if there is still movement?

FYI: Today's update from admissions
"Currently, our class is holding well so we may not get very far into our Wait List, unless something unusual happens"

FWIW I'm on the high priority waitlist and haven't heard anything yet. If that's any indication they may not touch the regular waitlist at all.

Sorry to be a downer 🙁

No problem and thanks for the update! I just wanted to know where I stand. It's not a big deal as I already have an acceptance, but I did love the school and was still hoping to attend. Oh, well.

Just released my spot here. I am so sorry that I won't be joining you guys at this wonderful school, but Australia called and I had to answer. Best of luck to everyone!

Can anybody comment on the time Interview day is over? I am most likely scheduling my flight back home at 5:10 pm and wanted to make sure I will make it on time. I would have to be at the airport 30 mns before the flight...Do interviews really end at 4:30 pm?
Would it be bad if I check the "do you need to leave before 4:30 pm" option?

Thank youuuuu!
