For those accepted, check out the Facebook page as @3rdarmageddon mentioned. In the Facebook Group, we're trying to start a carpool for those of you in the New York/Philadelphia/Pittsburgh region. We're going to meet up in Harrisburg, it looks like. Should save some money for all of us.

Looking forward to meeting all of you. I will be the guy in the Cavailer costume. :zip:

Does anyone know anything about UVA merit aid?

Hey @everest888 & @coug_96 ... you guys probably got the e-mail about financial aid. Just in case, here's the page about how to apply for financial aid in general. This application includes some information (background, home state/county, etc.) that is used for scholarships. Here's their page about other sources of assistance. Otherwise, I think it is more or less anyone's guess -- there's not much in last year's thread but a few hints in the 2011-2012 thread. We're supposed to get financial aid package offers on May 1st.

As for merit-based stuff, I remember @3rdarmageddon was pretty pessimistic about this as an OOSer, but I don't know if he was just speculating or if he had some reason to believe it. Someone stated in the 2011-2012 thread that: "At the financial aid meeting during interview day, they told us scholarships are rare and didn't give a very defined timeline for when they come out." I remember a similar vibe at the Financial Aid presentation, but I don't recall that the presenter said that merit schollies are unlikely. Perhaps this is what you were referring to, @3rdarmageddon ?

On the other hand, later in the 2011-2012 thread, @OrangeandMaroon stated that: "This isn't true. I can't speak to how many, but there are non-need based scholarships awarded. / Email came in early april." in response to a comment that "So pretty much the only scholarships that are given out are based on financial aid/need." @Steeler7588 (claiming to be a UVA med student) agreed with the first person:

"As OrangeandMaroon said, there are definitely merit scholarships, although they vary in how much they're worth. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of their merit awards has some sort of qualifier attached - from a certain area, of a particular heritage, etc. But there's nothing you can apply for specifically - at least, of UVa awards... definitely apply for any other awards of which you're eligible (the financial aid office does a good job of sending out national, regional, etc scholarship opportunities)."

In response to the idea that merit aid only accompanies admissions decisions, @Steeler7588 said that: "I was awarded my merit scholarship in mid/late April."

So... I think we can conclude that merit based aid may be given out as late as April/May, but it's tough to say exactly when.

I've seen the online instructions because that's what I've been going off of.. but you got a financial aid email?

Yup. Received this on Jan. 24th. If you haven't received one, I recommend that you call the number at the bottom of the e-mail, which is copied and pasted below the dotted line, @terp720 ....

Dear Ace-Co-A,

Congratulations on being offered admission to the University of Virginia School of Medicine!

This email contains important information, so please keep it in a safe place. Below you will find instructions to get a password to log in to the UVAStudent Information System. Former UVA students should already have a password (your Netbadge password), but may use the steps below to create a new one if needed.

In addition, we are providing you with your University ID, which you will need for certain tasks prior to your enrollment in August. Your UniversityID is #########.

To obtain a password for the Student Information System (SIS):

Go to the SIS login page at www.virginia.edu/sis

Click on “Get Password” on the right side of the page

Enter your UVA Computing ID: $$$#$$

and SIS ID: #######

Enter the other information (first name, last name, date of birth, email address) exactly as it was entered on your AMCAS admission application (you may want to refer to your application to ensure the correct match).

Click on the “Submit Request” button, and the system will generate your password. Copy it down carefully in a secure place. You may also want to highlight the password (being careful not to highlight any extra spaces) and “copy” the password so that you can paste it when you log in. Return to the login page (link above) and click on “SIS Login” to use your computing ID and newly generated password to log in to the student system.

All students applying for financial aid will need to log in to SIS to complete the UVA financial aid application. Please review the financial aidapplication instructions at http://www.medicine.virginia.edu/education/medical-students/financial-aid/application-process.

We want to make applying for financial aid as painless as possible! In addition to detailed instructions on how to apply for financial aid, our website also has a list of Frequently Asked Questions and contact information for your counselor: http://www.medicine.virginia.edu/education/medical-students/financial-aid

If you have any questions about obtaining your password or logging into SIS, please contact me at (434) 924-0033 or [email protected].

Sincerely,

Tonya Shifflett

Really bummed that I can't make it to UVA's second look weekend. I probably would have taken you guys up on that!

Steeler7588 (claiming to be a UVA med student) agreed with the first person:

I can verify that Steeler is currently a fourth year medical student.

Based on the list of scholarships the Medical School Foundation has each year, I'd say the Merit scholarships are given based on the feelings of the admissions committee for recruiting purposes. But I have nothing to support that argument.

Thanks for verifying! :highfive:

Who's all signed up for second look?

I'm gonna be there! Excited to meet you guys! 🙂 is anyone coming from DC/MD that might be interested in me carpooling with them, please let me know.

Do you have an idea of when these scholarships are given out?

I think scholarships will go out with the FinAid packages, which start going out May 1st

When I called the FinAid office, I think I remember being told that there's a chance the packages could start going out mid/late April depending on when tuition and fees is set

Hey. If I do remember you are an F1 international student right (as am I). I don't believe we qualify for that aid. A quick call to fin aid can confirm. But I met some int students during my interview and they were told because of their status they didn't qualify.

Hmmm... I was pretty sure we qualified for merit based scholarships. Those we don't have to apply for separately and they are awarded by the admissions department. We don't qualify for any of the need based aid though. I did meet with financial aid briefly during my interview day but I'll double check.

Edit: I think I was thinking of another school. I'm not seeing the information on merit scholarships I was thinking about. I'll call the admissions people to double check. When I spoke to the Fin Aid office about the Generalist Scholars Program I was told I wouldn't be able to get that funding due to the VISA status, but I thought they told me I would still be eligible for merit scholarships.

How'd you get your SIS and computing ID without the email? I didn't receive one either and I was accepted back in October..

I had to call the office to get mine. They send the email automatically, but mine got deleted along with spam. It takes literally like an instant for them to send it.

Actually just found a link on SIS website that gives you both of them. Hooray for being too lazy to call

Mine's not up yet so I keep checking it like a crazy person--sorry to hear that, people either seem to be thrilled with their packages or not so impressed

You'll receive an email as well so no need to keep logging into that system.

So UVA's financial aid FAQ says that they will give need-based scholarships to OOS up to 24K with demonstrated financial need, and it seemed to me that the admissions officers said that the full amount would generally be given if need was demonstrated. I was awarded significantly less despite my FAFSA indicating an expected family contribution of 0. Anyone have any idea if demonstration of need is less cut and dry, or why need-based scholarships might vary so much?

During the financial aid presentation on interview day, I specifically asked the lady whether we'll get need based scholarships if we meet the criteria/if need is demonstrated regardless of other selective factors like academic setting etc etc. And she answered yes, you will get it if you need it. I think...technically you should get the full amount? But honestly I have no idea how they distribute the money.... Maybe contacting your financial aid counselor would be a good idea.

Thanks, I just seem to have been offered a lot less than was estimated using the tool on their website. I appreciate the info.

The discrepancy comes from the fact that FAFSA automatically disregards parental information for graduate/professional students and only takes into account student finances. And since most students are broke, EFC is usually 0. UVA however DOES take into account parent info when calculating EFC (using the complicated formula below):

http://www.medicine.virginia.edu/ed...ssistance/calculated-parent-contribution.html

Of course, this is regardless of your parents' willingness to actually help pay for your education. I'm guessing the idea is that more affluent families (with parent incomes > $200k annually) have more resources to help their child get through med school compared to a family with a household income of $80k. Hope that makes sense.

Hey everyone! I was just recently accepted into the class and I'm looking for roommate(s)/a place to live. Anyone have any openings or suggestions? Feel free to PM me if you are interested/with suggestions!

The Facebook page is a great way to meet prospective roommates. There is even a list on there with people that need/looking for roommates. Congrats on your acceptance!

Hi, I am an accepted student who did not make it to the Second Look Weekend. I wonder are you still looking for a roommate? Also, how about the parking option of your apartment. Thank you.

Hi, everyone, I am looking forward to starting school in UVa. I wonder can any current students offer suggestions on housing options? Also, is it necessary to have a car on campus? Thank you very much.

Hey, if any female MS1's are interested in sharing a 2Br with me that costs around 600 and is a 20 min walk/bus from school, please message me.

Just bumping this for my future reference to see if we've had any waitlist movement?

Welcome to Charlottesville for anybody who comes off the waitlist! 🙂

if anyone is wondering, i called UVa and they said they haven't pulled anyone from the wait list yet. not looking too good.

I withdrew 5.14.14 so hopefully that means that there is at least 1 spot left to give to someone on the waitlist!

Hi, I'm an In-state applicant who is applying next year. I was wondering if being IS makes a huge difference for UVA SOM admissions? My GPA is less than perfect but my MCAT is on par with UVA stats (3.68 cGPA, 3.50 sGPA, 36 MCAT).

I wonder if anyone had similar stats and scored an II or Acceptance from UVA? Total dream school for me.
