2014-2015 Boston University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone interviewing this upcoming Monday want to meet up on Sunday? I am flying at like noon and I have no clue as to what to do with myself during the day.

II this morning! living in boston would be a dream come true. lizzy M = 71-72, OOS

Hey, hoping to get some insight from a current medical student at BU. What do you like/dislike about BU and its atmosphere? I know that the curriculum is pass/fail; is there still competitiveness among the students?

I've been mostly lurking here in the past, but I thought I would share my good news (I found it so helpful when people shared their interview invite dates, and stats), so:

II this morning! - complete email 9/2 - LizzyM 77

My first II so my heart is still racing a bit!

has anyone tried to log on to their account and got the 'your application is in high demand' notice to refresh the page? does that mean the app is being looked at? lol not likely that anyone here would know though haha

Nah dude, it means other schools are trying to poach your application away from BU. They are fighting with tooth and nail to keep you around, give em some space.

ahh obviously why didn't I realize that. i'm working on trying to find a new hobby

are they receptive to in the area emails? interviewing at tufts in october and need to decrease this traveling because I'm starting to go crazy 🙂

II today!! OOS. URM. 3.9 GPA. 12/11/10 MCAT. Completed 8/13
Grats! Also completed 8/13, but only silence here. Suppose that means I'm still under review/silent rejection for now. Did not receive delay or diversity emails.

Where are people staying here? I'm interviewing here on 10/17. Suggestions or someone looking to split a nice room? 24 male, might as well be freaking tinder up in here. Don't care if you are male or female.

I'll be in the area from 10/15 - 10/17
Feel free to pm me if interested or with questions?

I'm staying at the Best Western Roundhouse - pretty cheap and very close to the medical campus. They have a shuttle that goes there too!
I honestly just plugged the address into Google Maps and then searched for hotels nearby. The red dots for hotels pop up on the map, and you can input the dates to see the rates at each hotel. Its pretty nifty. I hope that helps 🙂

II this morning. Haven't scheduled my interview yet coz I'm waiting for reply from another school in Boston. Does any one know if BU has rolling admission?

They start letting people in in January, so I'm guessing rolling admissions starts then? When I called to reschedule my interview, the admissions rep told me I wouldn't be at a disadvantage by going later..

Congrats on the interview btw 🙂

what dates are they scheduling interviews for?
I have 15ish interview slots to choose from, basically every Mon, Wed and Fri until mid-Nov. That's why I decided I could afford to wait for a while to hear back from another school before scheduling the interview.

Complete since 7/7... Silence.

No idea if its a good or bad thing seeing as I seem to have been passed up for the initial round of interviews but BU has not been shy about rejecting people right off the bat

I received an odd email from BU stating that they haven't yet been able to review my application, but they wanted to reassure me that there was no penalty to me because of that. Did anyone else receive this email?

I appreciate that BU has relatively clear intentions in reviewing secondaries relative to other med schools. Then again, I'm getting some radio silence from all schools right now, sooo.

Yep got that one today too. An identical email was sent to other applicants in the past few weeks also.

Hi everyone, can you submit your secondary without all of your lor's?

I have two completed, but I'm not sure if the third person is writing one for me anymore, and I haven't finalized her replacement. I know I can definitely get one from someone, but I won't know who for a week or two.

Sure, you can definitely submit. You won't be considered complete until you meet the minimum letter requirements, and BU is very picky about the letters being in the correct format (letterhead, date, signature, etc).

I was complete 8/18 so I guess I should *hopefully* be hearing back within a week. Sounds like people from July still haven't heard yet and might be sitting in a 'hold'. Oy.

So where do med students at BU live? Is housing as expensive as hotels?

There is indeed a dorm as another poster said and many students live off campus. Housing is very expensive in Boston. There are over 100,000 students that come to Boston each September which really drives the demand-side of the market.

Hey everyone!
Just got my first II from here, and extremely excited! Marked complete on 8/26, II on 9/25
30+ MCAT, 3.5 GPA, but tons of clinical experience, research, volunteering, and currently enrolled in a special masters program (not BU's)
Therefore, from my stats, THERE IS HOPE OUT THERE PEOPLE!!

What % of applicants are sent a secondary application?

The Northmen say that Winter is Coming. But I saw in the fire, rejection letters and II's come Friday afternoon.

Boston must strike their banners for the one true king of Westeros.
And nothing. Well, this wouldn't be the first time Melisandre's God failed me.

What were the interviews like at BU for those who have already been?

The interview day was really straightforward; introduction speech from dean of admissions, interview, lunch, tour of medical school, farewell speech, done by 2:00PM. Interview was pretty open-ended, like at most schools.
