2014-2015 Duke University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
+2 to limbo.

I would have to say that I'd disagree with the analysis presented here. I think that part of the issue with the clerks is that they simply do not know, or it is their policy to not check the status of applications. (It could be both). It's a reasonable policy because it would prevent individuals who simply haven't gotten their mail from calling all the time, although that is a less convincing reason now that many people have received their letters in the mail.

The crucial point for me that causes me to disagree is that they seem to be adamant that all waitlist and rejection emails have gone out; if they truly believe that and are telling us to wait for the mail, they can't believe that we're misplaced rejections.

You all can feel free to disagree with me, but this is just my thought process. (In fact, if you disagree with me, then I would encourage you to voice it). Now, whether or not we are actually lost in the system (as acceptances, waitlists, or rejections) is still up for debate. My comments were just directed to what the admissions staff believe when they are talking to us.

I agree with everything you said: what I meant was that we might be a group whose emails have simply gotten misplaced, and the Duke admissions staff is not aware of it. Now that Second Look emails have gone out I'm even more inclined to think this.

what are they doing in that office?! +1 limbo

Have people who were rejected/WL gotten a portal change?

That makes sense. Theoretically, everyone who is accepted, waitlisted, or rejected should have gotten an email by this point.

It may be time to take the plunge and call the office...

If calling the office, I think the important thing might be to see if the office can confirm that everyone should have received an email by now, right? (In the most innocuous way possible because you don't want to belittle them). The only issue could be if they are sending the second look emails in batches, but I doubt that is the case.

There's no smoking gun, but I think that it's reasonable to assume that somehow our emails got lost (or maybe even our applications post-interview). None of us got phone calls. None of us have gotten acceptance letters. None of us have gotten second look emails. None of us have gotten waitlist or rejection emails. We've just gotten silence.

I'm pretty sure an interviewee from my day was accepted, so it doesn't even make sense that they just missed a day of interviews. Something quite strange is going on here.

This thread has been so intense for the last week, but now it's almost getting funny. Also in the "no communication from Duke of any kind" boat, 10/8 interview, PCLT, tried calling this afternoon too but it went straight to voicemail.

It is ! I went from pessimistic to glimmer of hope to cautiously confident I was accepted, and now that I didn't get a second look email I'm just laughing to avoid crying.

It seems interesting that our interview dates are so close together. @peyton91 and @Scoville, do you mind sharing your interview date? Either on the forum or PM?

Edit: And if any other individuals who are in limbo, which is amusingly a section of Purgatory, could share their interview dates that would be great. A very apt location to be.

Mid november

It's just bizarre that the admissions office can't give any sort of indication as to when we will find out.

Could it be possible that maybe we were on the cusp and that they took the weekend to decide? Perhaps then they released their last batch of acceptances on the same day they released the WL...Wishful/Hopeful thinking 🙂

Can someone who has been accepted help me with something? Go to your portal --> My Profile --> "View Application History"

Do you have any "activity" after the date of your interview? I have a number of boxes, e.g. "Application Signed In," but my most recent is "Application Signed Out" on my interview day. Wondering if there would be activity recorded when they make a decision on your application.

I was accepted and my last activity is interview scheduled..zz sorry

Since I work so close to the medical school I was thinking of stopping by the admissions office later this week if we still haven't heard anything. Maybe they still won't be able to tell me anything, but I'll be sure to look under tables and behind desks for a stack of forgotten acceptance letters 😉

So, did all of the previously accepted students get the second look email today, even those that didn't get a call last week and got surprise letters? @Zobasity can you help with this at all?

Edit: What I'm asking is: is there anyone who knows they are in but didn't get a second look email?

I say for those of you still in limbo, you should find a really good lawyer that can somehow turn this situation into an acceptance with full scholarship.

+1 to limbo. Interested in knowing this as well, so I can go back to holding a glimmer of hope lol.

+1 limbo as well - I am a long time lurker but am completely fed up at this point. I am on the West Coast, interviewed end of November and haven't heard anything. I wish that I was in the area so I could go to admissions and ask them face to face.

Yea I did receive the second look email. I really feel for you guys. I dnt know what I will do if I was still in limbo and like this.

Maybe it's just me, but I think it might be a bit uncomfortable for the admissions staff there if an interviewee marched in and requested his/her status. I really think phone/email communication is best.

I've done some thinking, and unfortunately it seems very unlikely that the in limbo group will be accepted (at least as a whole). There are just too many people here on SDN who haven't heard a decision for it to be realistic. We do seem to be a high stat group in general though... (LM=76 here)

I'm beginning to agree with this. I might take my turn calling tomorrow, since I have to contact a few other admissions offices anyway. I wanted to email them and give them a link to this thread to make them aware of how frustrating this is for everyone, but it seems like their preferred method of correspondence is phone.

mail them a letter...

but make sure the mailman loses it between the seats for a few days.

not a bad idea to kill some time with this distraction, im 77. For some reason, I don't think Duke is as concerned with stats as some peer institutions.

Better yet, I'll call them to tell them I'm going to email them, and then I'll send them a letter a week later instead. And that will only be for half of the admissions office. The others I'll refuse to communicate with at all.

I'm still cautiously optimistic...
a. When I interviewed, Dean Armstrong said they were aiming to release acceptances starting Monday the 23rd through the following Monday... so perhaps they released more this week? Especially since the weather has probably made things more challenging...
b. Reports seem to consistently indicate that R/WL e-mails have already been released...
c. The office keeps telling us to wait a few more days for the mail...so maybe they want us to get an acceptance letter before we get an e-mail telling us about revisit week?
Maybe, possibly, I hope...

It seems pretty obvious at this point that there was a glitch somewhere in their system--whether that glitch is in the WL/R emails or the letters being sent, I dont know. It seems more likely that the mistake would be in the emails however. My guess is all of us in limbo are either WL or R. Also, its worth noting that I did not feel too great about my MMI. Regardless, everyone say your prayers tonight--there's still hope!

I saw earlier posts said rejections were supposed to come out later in the week (Wed/Thurs?). Maybe the first batch of rejections were sent out early accidentally.

when I called she said all acceptance letters were mailed friday and saturday. So assuming it was late Saturday, that gives us 3 days so far with no mail.... I'm thinking bad news, just assuming and planning as if its rejection and hopefully will be pleasantly surprised. I still want to know the limbo count on sdn. I may comb through here and see what I find.

It would be a little twisted if they told us all WL/R emails were sent out and then surprise us tomorrow with emails. I'm still hoping snail mail will reach me...maybe a telegraph or something. Pretty much anything at this point, considering some people have gotten two letters, calls, AND emails! Can I get one of those...

I don't even have an "application signed out" on my interview day. I just have interview scheduled lol definitely forgotten

Current student here. I'm really sorry for those of you who are still in "limbo" @flowerpower123, @Willy38, @peyton91, @Inventor of Post-Its, @asterix531 and others. Hang in there! I had two thoughts for you all.

1) Our mail in Durham was really messed up last Thursday. They never delivered it nor picked it up. I think it is possible that the letters may truly be "lost in the mail."
2) If you stayed with a student host or got to know any current Duke students when you interviewed, perhaps you can reach out to them regarding your situation. I agree with @Australopithekus that it would be awkward if an applicant walked into the admissions office asking to know the status of their application; however, if someone I hosted were in you all's position, I would be willing to walk over to the admissions office on their behalf, just to make sure the admissions staff knew that the applicant hadn't received anything.

I'm thinking of you all and sending positive thoughts your way. 🙂

darn you for getting my hopes up again lol noooooo

But seriously, thank you for the encouragement. Just unsure why we wouldn't get second look emails if accepted.

Literal roller coaster of emotions! Every other post makes me think us limbo kids are accepted but then again the lost emails seems legitimate too...
