2014-2015 Duke University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Another current Duke student here.

I just wanted to say congratulations to everyone who has been accepted and to offer encouragement to those of you who are on the WL. The Duke Med Class of 2019 is going to be amazing!

To the handful of you who haven't heard anything, I'm so sorry. I have nothing to do with admissions, but I feel bad because this has to be so stressful for you! My gut says that no news is good news. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

On a personal note, two of my friends, both of whom I thought were great candidates, were rejected at Duke today. If you're like them (or maybe you are them...which would be ironic), just know that even if you weren't accepted at Duke, you will still be a great doctor. I can only imagine how competitive the application pool here at Duke must have been this year, and unfortunately, there aren't nearly enough seats in the class for all of the incredible people who interview here.

Feel free to PM or post any questions.

@Duke2018, @GoBlueDevils @SpikeWave , could any of you give us info on your entering class profile? Specifically, what percentage of the class is non-traditional or what the median starting age was? I haven't found this info online. Many thanks!

The entering class last year was very, very diverse in all kinds of ways. To get at your question about non-traditional students, I think that the average age was 24 or 25 (not sure), but the range was 20-30. In other years, there have been students who started well into their 30s. Maybe 10-15% of the class has advanced degrees (master's degrees or PhDs), again this is a guess. Quite a few people had careers in other fields before coming to medicine (teachers, consultants, business/finance people, engineers, missionaries/people who worked in ministry, etc.--really the whole gamut). There are maybe 8 or 10 students (out of 109) who are married and there are even med students who are parents. I'd guess that at least 10% of students own a home, which is another non-traditional type of thing. That said, there are a lot of students who are either right out of undergrad or who just took one gap year.

I hope that this helps.

Yes, thank you!

I think it will wrong of me to not post, as I was really glad to hear from people who heard back about their Duke decisions all of last week.

Honestly, I have very mixed feelings about what went through last week. I was very frustrated at Duke and how the whole decisions were released. I felt all of the pain that most of us went through and honestly, the two tests that I took last week went bad prob because of my preoccupation with knowing what is going on.

I did receive an acceptance letter today!! This is without any calls or anything throughout the last week. For those that did not get in, I really wish you the best and I'm sure you will earn your MD in a great institution. For those that haven't heard anything yet, I really hope and think that there is an acceptance letter on the way for you.

I was blown away by Duke when I interviewed and luckily, I have other choices that are also as good as Duke. I really hope that Duke works out financially so that I can come.

Thanks to everybody that waited through with me last week and best of luck with the rest of us.

If you don't mind me asking, what part of the country are you from? I'm holding on to the hope that I'll find a letter in the mail tomorrow. Congrats!

Any idea when we will receive more details about second look weekend? I want to book a flight before it gets more expensive!

has anyone in limbo heard anything or received anything in the mail?

I've also heard nothing and just checked with my town's post office and once again no mail from Duke today (or yesterday)... Just called admissions and the woman who answered claimed all reject/WL emails have gone out and the only thing to do was wait for the mail.... she also suggested checking the portal but mine still says application complete.... really just confused

I did the same thing. I guess the only thing we can really do is wait for the mail...

that's crazy, she wouldn't tell you your decision or give you any clarity?

As in, your mail has come and you checked and nada? Or mail hasn't come yet?

If I don't hear by lunch and there's nothing in the mail, I'll call and try to end this madness.

My mail doesn't come until later in the day, but I will let you know. I live in Virginia, so it is strange that the mail has reached the Midwest but not here.

I think that's because they sent out the mail at different times. So your letter may be in the later pool. Just a thought

Just spoke with my mailman (he probably thinks I am stalking him after this week) and nothing. I tried calling the admissions office and no one picked up. As much as I love Duke I am so fed up with this craziness. Second look is only two weeks away!

EDIT: Called again. someone at the admissions office took my name and phone number and said they would look into it. Although she did say a bunch of times she could not tell me my admissions status but hopefully she'll help me figure it out!

Yeah its ridiculous. I love Duke also and would love to go there, but I have plans and need know whether or not I am invited to second look in a couple weeks. Luckily, I am within driving distance, I can't imagine how crazy this is for say, a Californian.

Soooooooooo no consensus on what is going on with those of us who haven't heard yet? :vomit:

Was supposed to golf at 10:30 but thats about the time my mail usually comes so I pushed my tee time back till 12:30... I'm officially insane. Hopefully there is something in the mail today...

So she did say, unambiguously, that AL WL/reject emails have gone out??
Oh Duke, I've heard of the silent rejection, but the silent acceptance is definitely a new one...

When I called she did say all WL/rejection emails had been sent out. But then she said she would looks and see if there was an error in my file. So while I want to be optimistic, with my luck they just forgot to send out my rejection letter. She took my phone number to contact me after she looked into it, which I am now completely regretting as I have simply stared at my phone for the past half hour...there goes work for the day.

well, there seems to at least be a few of us in limbo. Maybe all of our last names are toward the end of the alphabet and they are mailing accordingly?

Also in limbo, but my last name is in the first ten letters of the alphabet.

I'm really trying to study for an exam tomorrow, but running outside to check the mail every ten minutes is not helping!

Mine is towards the end of the alphabet. Im also in California so I think that might have more to do with it. Or its very very possible that the admissions simply made an error...

I'm finding harder and harder to believe that people that don't get the phone calls will be accepted via email only.

You gotta help us out here @GTHC31

I also find it hard to believe that acceptances will be given out past today, considering tomorrow is an off day and Monday is probably the day waitlists and rejections will leach out.

Sorry I haven't been on in a while! Can't comment on whatever admissions is trying out this year... It all seems very... experimental haha. However, Second Look Weekend emails go out either today or tomorrow soooo there's that... Snail mail seems so Oregon Trail these days, but I guess if you're admitted you have something to frame?

My mom (who lives at the permanent address I put on my AMCAS; I don't) just said there was nothing in the mail from Duke today. But, nothing in my email either. Or in my voicemail. Or at my apartment address, which I never put on my application. Or at my old hotmail account from 2001.

My address is also my parents address..I can't even run in panic towards my mailbox. Guess I will have to wait until my parents get out of work to know. In the meantime I will just keep having a heart attack every time the email notification pops up on my phone, 99% of the time it turns out to be Kaplan giving me MCAT tips...because that is what I really need right about now. Duke, you will be the death of me!

Check your Myspace, boot up AOL, look outside for smoke signals or carrier pigeons. It sounds like everything is fair game with Duke.

Mine is at the begining and my interview date is at the end.

Nothing in my mail box or email.

So for those with questions about second look, I just called to try to get more information. I asked what time we should be there Friday and what the situation with lodging was, and she said she really wasn't sure...so I basically said, "Gurl, flights went up $100 in the past two days so you best find out." She then told me information will be emailed out today.

Sass always gets ish done.

My mail was just delivered in the midwest, and I got nothing from Duke. Asterix, have you heard anything back? Has anyone else called Duke today?

So maybe some of the limbo people will get this email?? Maybe good news. Sending good vibes to everyone in hopes that something materializes regarding Duke.

@tenniseagle92 , would you mind posting when you get the second look email?

Nothing in the mail, just called the admissions office and was told that all WL/Rejection emails have gone out so I just need a couple more days to get my acceptance letter in the mail
