2014-2015 Duke University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Keep calm and carry on. P.S. I've jumped on the penguin avatar bandwagon. Fingers crossed...
The cliche "there are no atheists in foxholes" apparently has a corollary: "there are few penguinless medical school aspirants." Okay, okay. . .superstition. Some days I'm willing to base my hopes on even shakier foundations. (I did keep the India theme, though. . .I am not sure what the penguin motif says about India, though. I'm identifying right now with the penguin awkwardly frozen on the shore, and I want to be the one braving the frigid vastness of the ocean!)

I'm super-worried. My UG school is one of those in which a "composite writer" gathers all the letters and other materials and puts a packet together. I had to have all my "stuff" in before June 1, and know that the packet was passed along to the "senders" in mid-June, but it was not verified until August 1. Despair. I got one II, but every email check is another exercise in futility. LizzyM is just 74, and no significant scientific research. . .I was one of those humanities majors who fulfilled the premed requirements. Alas! Woe is me!!!

If you were only verified on August 1st, one II is nothing to scoff at (neither is a 74 LizzyM)! I was verified June 13th with a LizzyM of 75 and still "only" have one interview. The admissions cycle is a crazy process, and basically we are all lucky to be standing with an acceptance at the end of it all. Good luck to you!

Does anyone know (WITH ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY) what classes will fulfill the cell bio req? On one page, some say that it is only recommended while another says that it is required. Additionally, its hard for me to glean from the description, but it seems as though genetics will fulfill the requirement. It seems a bit more clearer when they describe the reqs for the class entering in 2016. I posted the two pages below.

I put genetics as my cell bio requirement and I have an interview so take that as you will?

Thank you. Such a kind reply! I feel like polishing off my Southern accent and confiding that "I have always depended upon the kindness of strangers!" (Of course, come to think of it, Blanche Dubois spoke that line just before she was carted off to the looney bin. . .nevertheless, I am grateful for the encouragement. Gosh--nice folks on this forum!)

Sorry for the delay in answering some of your questions.

Has anyone managed to successfully set up a student host for their interview? I got the email a few weeks ago about how the hosting program hadn't been set up yet, but that was two weeks ago. I'm sort of hoping to stay with a student host during my interview, (which is during the first week of their interviews)...

PM me if you still haven't heard anything.

Email/call the admissions office to be sure, but they seem to be pretty flexible. Don't get me wrong - you need to do the prereq's but the school realizes that many colleges have integrated curriculums, weird class designations, etc.

Do you guys know how to sign up for a host?

Should have been in your interview email. Let me know if you don't see it and I will try to get in touch with someone to figure it out. Or just call/email admissions!

I also haven't heard about how to sign up for a host. Has anyone been successful in doing so?

Now everyone is just going to get you and @researchismymiddlename confused with @gettheleadout 😛

I considered that after I had already made my avatar and now I hope @gettheleadout doesn't mind! 😳 My favorite character is Squidward but searching for "squidward smart" doesn't give many good hits except for a goofy SpongeBob face I adore but didn't think suited my profile.

Searching for "spongebob smart" on the other hand gives many results of Patrick looking scholarly and erudite. I suppose the antithesis of Patrick and smartness is just emphasized in the show since the result is really quite comical.

My last two choices were of Patrick the Pinhead and of Patrick with a rock on his head... but I chose this picture because my avatar went with my username just perfectly 🙂

I'm not sure exactly when I was complete and under review but I submitted my secondary the first week of July. I checked my status earlier today- and it showed I was declined, no email or anything. So it had to have been within the last 48 hours or so

does anyone know if Duke only reads letters after offering an interview? I thought I read that somewhere but maybe I'm just making that up.

Hi - I think in the II email it stated that a student housing committee was being formed and they'd let us know when student housing is available. I received my II on 8/14, emailed them on 8/24 inquiring about housing, and still haven't heard anything...anyone else heard anything re: student housing?

Hi everyone! I'm new here- thought I'd check it out! Did anyone else get this message on their portal:

Application Notice: We encourage you to consider completing the DukeMed Supplemental Application even though your GPA or MCAT score is below 3.0 or 25. However, please be aware that you are beginning the admissions process at a disadvantage, unless your application offers compelling grounds for consideration, such as an exceptional and longitudinal track record of clinical and research exposure, community service, leadership practice, or other significant activities and experiences outside of the classroom.

I definitely don't have below 3.0 or 25 so I'm concerned. Also I haven't been rejected- still under review since 7/25.

Never heard about this message. You can just call their office if you still concern about it.

Just checked my portal and had this message as well, very strange.

Strange, I don't have that message (I still have the generic Application Screening one).

It sounds like a message only for those who haven't submitted their secondary yet (since it's encouraging them to complete the secondary).

That makes sense.

@Rose99 said they've been under review since 7/25, so I'm presuming that means they submitted their application.

Missed that, you're right. Even weirder.

I called the admissions office (super nice people btw) and they seemed to think everyone receives this message? Still kind of confusing... 🙁

yeah I've had the "under review" for a while, and just got the notice!

yeah but i submitted my secondary, maybe it's a glitch message

just checked my status and rej as well. Looks like they don't update rejections with an email, good luck everyone!
