2014-2015 Florida Atlantic University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know if FAU accepts updates in regards to additional letters rather than just ECs, grades, etc.?

Can anyone who has interviewed speak on the differences between the first and second interviews?

The first interview is more of a regular interview where you talk about things on your application and essays the second is less about your application and more about different situations that test more of your thought process and morals. For example, what would you do if you saw someone cheating on a test in medical school? Tell me about a leadership experience. etc.

My status has been at "Review in progress" since I submitted on Oct. 8. Does this mean my secondary has not even been looked at yet?

Hi guys!!! I'm an M1 here and I just wanna tell you guys that it seriously isn't over till the fat lady sings and none of the fat ladies I know can sing anyway.
I didn't even get an interview until December AND I got wait listed AND I still got in!! If this is the school you want, believe in yourself :)
Also @azngujuonfire (I think I spelled that right?) congrats on the II!! I remember seeing you on the boards last year and I'm totally rooting for you this year!!
If you guys have any questions, feel free to ask me :) this process is the worst but you're all wonderful and I absolutely believe in you!

Good things come to those who wait!

II Today! OOS, no Florida ties. Boca Raton seems like a nice place!

This is my first, "need to fly, rent a car & hotel" interview. Anyone have any suggestions on how to minimize the financial bleeding?

also, any suggestions on how to prepare?

congrats :) the Palm Beach airport (PBI) tends to be a bit pricier since it's a smaller airport, so I'd suggest looking to fly into Fort Lauderdale (FLL)

Placed on the alternate list. Very disappointing, since I was really impressed by what's going on at the school. That makes 3/3 waitlists for me....

Anyway, the email was very strange. It started off with "It has been a banner year! I am delighted to confirm that the Committee on Admissions completed their review and..............has voted to place you on the Alternate List."

The email then ended with "Congratulations and welcome to the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine family!" Uhhhhhhhh, thanks, i guess?

Is this the "Accepted Alternate List" that people talked about in last years thread? I am very confused as to what this means.

Congrats!! I live in Pompano Beach now - moved here after grad to pursue school down here. You should definitely fly into Ft. Lauderdale, MUCH cheaper flights generally and it's a very short drive to Boca. Same goes for accommodations - inside of Boca city limits and around the school is full of snowbirds and tends to be busy and expensive this time of year. You might be better off staying in a hotel in Delray Beach, its the next town over. :)

I stayed at the Boca Raton Plaza Hotel, which is very close to campus and looked like the cheapest option.

For anyone waiting, just got an interview invite earlier today! This might be a question not easily answered, but I'm coming from California and am trying to decide which FL interviews to go to. I've been invited by FAU, FIU, UF, and USF. just off the top of your head, which are the better schools?

I'll message you. Congrats, and 4 FL interviews as OOS is very impressive!

Do most people who aren't accepted post-interview get placed on alternate list?

at my interview day Betty Monfort said that out of the 200 people or so that they had interviewed as of the first week of December, only one person had been rejected post-interview.

Accepted earlier this month! Definitely one of my top choices, especially after visiting on interview day. Good luck to everyone applying!

Finally made it to preliminary review complete! Fingers crossed for the II!

Can anybody who got an interview tell me how long they waited between this step and the II?

I'm not entirely sure how long it took for me from that status but i received an II about 1.5 months after submitting.

Today marks my 6 month anniversary of being at "Review In Progress" !

Does anyone think that FAU has filled all 64 seats already? Or do they only accept a very small amount of people at a time?

stumbled across some stats from this cycle on their Facebook page:

Nearly four years since its inception, the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University has received a record-breaking 4,370 applications for 64 positions for the incoming class of 2015, and 4,739 applications for 36 positions in the University’s first residency program in internal medicine. These numbers represent a 35 percent increase in medical school applications from last year, and a 22 percent increase in applications for the residency program from the previous year.
“The response we have received from prospective applicants to our medical school and internal medicine residency program is outstanding and truly speaks to the quality of our programs in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine and our hospital partners in the FAU Graduate Medical Education Consortium,” said David J. Bjorkman, M.D., M.S.P.H., dean and executive director of medical affairs in FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine.
Demographics of the applicants for the M.D. program show that 52 percent are Florida residents (nearly half of these applicants are from South Florida) and 48 percent are from out-of-state. Fifty-four percent are male and 46 percent are female. Qualified students from groups currently underrepresented in medicine are included in the applicant pool—20 percent are Asian/Asian Indian; 16 percent are Hispanic; and 12 percent are African/American. The average Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is 33.5 with a GPA of 3.8.

this doesn't exactly answer your question but at the interview day, Ms. Monfort emphasized that unlike most other schools, they do not over accept, that is they don't have more than 64 acceptances out at a given time. however, as soon as someone turns down an admissions offer, they immediately offer the spot to the next person on the wait list.

Yeah... me too. I called them to ask what was going on, and they said that my secondary was complete, that they had received all the info, but that they hadn't gotten to review mine just yet.

I also have the status "review in progress" with last status update 11/24/14. I'm hoping they get back to me soon

Did anyone else interview here on 1/9/15? Did they say that the committee will be meeting on the 28th or 29th of January?
