2014-2015 Florida International University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I get the impression that there just haven't been as many seats available this year as in the past. It can vary greatly from year to year -- for example, last year, UF offered no positions to the waitlist and actually had to offer a handful of full-scholarship deferrals because they were still over-accepted even after attrition. It never appeared that there would be a large wave of waitlist acceptances at the deadline this year, but keep up hope that there will be steady offers given throughout the summer!

The good news -- there are almost certainly some seats available right, and I imagine there will be at least a few offers by early next week! Good luck =]

EDIT: And thanks for the inside info, MrBrewster! 🙂

Alright, folks, you heard the man -- I'm expecting good news out of some of us this week. Don't let me down.

Spoke to someone from FIU - recruitment seems to have been more effective this year ( unfortunately for waitlisters :/ ) they have not tapped into the wait list as in previous years because they have a full class and some. hope this helps those anxiously waiting a response in may and june, which was common in previous years.

So, they're over-accepted? Because the SDN user @MrBrewster seems to think that there is a bit of wiggle room now. Seems that we have conflicting information.... 🤔

usually they over accept and then after the deadlines and attrition, the wait list is tapped into for the remaining seats open. this year, however, they do not have open seats as of yet. that could change anytime between now and when classes start. i spoke with a pretty reliable source from the school. This is pretty much the opposite of what has happened in previous years - where a large chunk of students were accepted from the wait list in may and june.

Well, that's discouraging.

But, I don't understand how they justified being over-admitted when an SDN user was pulled from the list less than 2 weeks ago. So, they obviously had room in the class at SOME point after the sanctioned deadline.

If over admittance was the reason why we're all still waiting, and if this was a new phenomenon, wouldn't it make sense for them to revisit their policy and divulge wait list position? Or would that be too...

It is definately a weird situation... On one hand overadmittance would explain the lack of waitlist movement but at the same time if they have been over admitted then why did they open the waitlsit a few weeks ago?? I called FIU about a week ago to check on the waitlist and they confirmed that there was some small movement a few weeks ago (so its not just trusting that that SDN member rlly got in)

I contacted them more recently than what you mentioned above and they told me that they don't have a date for when there would be any wait list movement. The confusion continues.

I will preface this by openly admitting how unreasonably hypocritical it is:

We're hearing that the waitlist hasn't moved; that it has moved; we might hear something this week; we won't hear anything until much later, if ever. Despite the confusion and frustration, the one thing that remains ironclad is the fact that worrying about it won't change anything. So, what if the Dean of Admissions came forward and stated the exact moment (down to the second) that waitlist movement was anticipated, along with exactly how many seats would need to be filled? It simply wouldn't change anything. The knowledge of waitlist activity gets us no where closer to being pulled into the class; just because you know what's happening does not mean that your knowledge will suddenly throw the doors wide open for you. Perhaps we should all just take a deep breath and hope for a call, because waitlist movement doesn't mean diddly until your phone rings.

....Having said that, I've probably refreshed this thread 3,409+ times 😉 At this point, I just want to see SOMEONE get in so that I can confirm that these whisperings of waitlist movement aren't a figment of my imagination.

Also, something that no one has mentioned yet, how likely do you think it is that there has been a slow trickle of offers that do NOT coincide with SDN-using candidates? Possible, right? Probably not likely, but possible.

I called them today and was told that there is waitlist movement going on and it will continue until orientation...

I personally think that this is the case. I have met plenty of people at interviews that don't have SDN accounts or don't even use this website. I highly doubt that this one SDN user is the only one that has been accepted.

I also agree with everything that you said in the rest of this post. We can try to make sense of the admissions process but it won't change anything. At this point, the decision is out of our hands. All we can do is be patient and hope for the best.

Then they're telling all of us different things because I contacted them the same day as you did!

As much as I want to find excuses to stay hopeful, there's nothing I can really hold on to except chance. I called like many of you and was told that the alternate list IS moving but very slow. They were extremely reluctant to give me a date (which they couldn't) or any inch of information to make me feel more at ease so maybe the class is full? In reality we don't accomplish anything by speculating but everything right now is just that...speculation. Maybe it gives ourselves the false hope we are all looking for to make ourselves feel better lol. We are speculating amongst ourselves dying to find out any little minuscule information that might help console us, trying to decipher any and all information that we throw at each other and looking at everything under a microscope. We make the effort to support each other, to comfort each other in these times of great stress and suspense. A time when an email or phone call can alter our lives so profoundly that others have no clue of its profoundness. In the end though there is nothing we can do. It's pointless. There are people who have been on the alternate longer than half a year without any change. It's already June. Sure there is time but its getting to the point where this late in the game, only a select few will get lucky as they fill replacements. If I had to guess from their silence, it's pretty much a wrap for most of us.

If nothing else, be proud to be here. Seriously. I have friends that have gone 3 or 4 application cycles without as much as a waitlist position. And think of ALLLLLLLLLL the folks you started the pre-med journey with: that guy who said that he was going to be a neurosurgeon as a first semester freshman; that twitchy Asian girl with too many pens in her pocket; the dude who raised his hand to answer every question posited by the professor.... and was wrong EVERY. SINGLE. TIME -- none of them made it this far! But, you DID. You passed the gauntlet.

(sidenote: the neurosurgeon-to-be and dude-who-should-think-before-answering happened to be the same guy, in my class 😉 )

We all have jumped through innumerable hoops, lost so much sleep, and missed out on so many parties/beach days/camping trips/BBQs to be here. Sure, some of us may only be relying on this one waitlist (*cough* this girl, right here), but--at least in some masochistic regard--it's still kind of satisfying.

of course, I would still scream until my neck split open if I got a call....

Just checking in with everyone. Yay for the waiting game!

Has anyone submitted primaries yet?

I'm waiting on some feedback on whether or not I should submit this year (having only taken 2 extra classes, and published a couple of extra manuscripts/researched for another 2,000+ hours -- not changing anything significantly), OR pursue a Master's and apply next cycle (which would change my file pretty drastically).

Kind of feels like life is on hold....

It's difficult to not know what's going to happen or where you're going to be in the next two months. I submitted my primary application on the third. I'm still very hopeful about the waitlist but I figure it's better early than late. 2000 hours is quite a bit...

This was my 5th application cycle. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over that period is you need to hope for the best but have a solid backup plan. The application cycle prior to this one was the best because it was either I get into medical school, checking out with a masters, or go for the PhD. Takes all the pressure off of the outcome. One of my favorite quotes from my PI carries an important lesson with regards to medical school application cycles “You didn’t miss the boat, you’re on it.”

Always better to be prepared. The way I see it, if you have solid alternative options (or even an early re-application) it helps to quell needless worry.

2,000+ hours sounds like a lot, I gather. But. when you have close to 15,000, one additional year is just tossing time onto the pile. *shrug*

Thanks for sharing your anecdote! If I were an admissions member, I would be highly impressed with your dedication to the craft. I hope you hear good news 🙂

So just to give people on the waitlist a quick update. There have been less than 10 acceptances off the alternate list thus far (unlike previous years). They currently have 125 students committed to the class of 2019 so I am not sure how much more movement there will be down the stretch.

Regarding recent Step 1 scores, 244 is the average for step one in the most recent class with around 75% of the scores back. I would expect this number to drop slightly when the rest of the class receives their scores in July.

Thank you so much for the clarification. I had seen your input on past years' threads, and I appreciate your dedication to spreading helpful information. This may not be something you can answer, but I'm curious about the 125...

The class size is 122 (correct me, please, if I'm wrong). Does this mean that they're over-enrolled by 3, and will not utilize the waitlist until they lose 3 people?

You're the best!

244?! That's astonishing. Even with the projected drop that's still an awesome average. Thanks for the info!

I am not sure if the 125 is including people who had to take a leave of absence or something similar from a previous class or if they have indeed accepted 125. I just spoke with reliable sources that said there are already 125 seats filled. Sorry I can't elaborate further. Best of luck!

Hopefully seeing this new post doesn't cause undue stress! Just wanted to give everyone a smile and some well-wishes as we near July..... with no news....

But, that means July has GOT to be the month, right guys?! .....G-guys....?

You guys still alive out there? I feel like we've been together for one year, so I'd hate to not hear a parting update.

For my part: I'm still waiting to hear something from FIU (about one month left to be contacted, guys!), but submitted my primaries for the new year. I was accepted to a Master's, which I figured would be academically productive for me to do if I have to apply for another year...

What's up with you lot?

Hey! Still out here and waiting unfortunately. I had a rather long comment to post but I deleted it. I'm tired of being angry at this situation. I'm also tired of being optimistic. It sounds like you're taking all the logical steps but, whatever happens, I hope you get the call (and a 75% tuition scholarship as an apology for the agony). I also hope I get that call . It's not yet time for final comments.

With a month left, it's not COMPLETELY out of the picture (but it's definitely on its way out). Fingers crossed for you 🙂

I still wake up everyday and hope that its that fateful day that I get the call. But either way I've already applied for next cycle and I've turned around 14 secondaries, including FIU's. I really loved this school; This and Miami are my top choices are my top choices this cycle. (Assuming this year isn't going to happen)

As for me, I'll be doing a research internship at Mayo this year!

Research is always a good bet (take it from someone with 6 years of it!) 😀

That's impressive! That must take quite a bit of time. Way to show commitment.

I think I may reach out to FIU sometime within the week and see if they can give me an idea about movement this year. I'm sure I know the answer but it wouldn't hurt to try.

Well, it took 6 years of full-time work so... yeah, a little 😉

Last time I spoke with an admin, they confirmed less than 10 people had been pulled, and that they don't expect a last-minute rush of dropping, but there's still a potential for a couple more. Maybe something has changed *shrug* worth a shot to ask!

You should've gotten in on that premise alone.. :poke:

I shot one of the Deans an email. Hopefully he'll email me back and I'll give everyone an update.

Excellent research; underdog GPA as a non-traditional student -- it was a tough application cycle, but whaddya gonna do?

Thanks for keeping us in the loop, my man!

Basically the gist was that there was very little alternate list movement this year, unfortunately. 🙁

Got a 305 call.... definitely wet myself. Unfortunately, it was UHaul, confirming a recent reservation.

Either more 305 numbers need to call me, acclimating me to the area code, or NO 305 numbers need to call. I NEVER hear from that location and it makes me go full-on sympathetic, every time.

Yeah kinda sucks and it seems like it's trending that way. I remember a few years ago tons of people got off the alt list and each year since they have turned to the list less and less.

Anyone OOS receive an interview/acceptance to Greenville with no ties to Florida? Trying to decide if I should submit my secondary or not, these fees are starting to add up!
