2014-2015 Florida International University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You have a chance at getting an interview. However, if I were you, I would retake the MCAT given that you can really only attend two schools. You may also want to consider NOVA.

thank you. yeah considering NOVA (though so not excited about that route…..)or a retake. The retake would be a big undertaking though since I did not take psych or sociology and I won't have time to adequately prepare before the upcoming cycle. There is no point in taking it a third time and doing craptastic again. If i do it, it'll likely be later on this year or next year and I would try and use it for a third application attempt.

Hi all,

I am going to be applying here next year. Just wondering if anyone has gotten in with stats similar to mine and who maybe is also "non-traditional"--I am going to be very geographically limited cause my husband is taking a job in south Florida so my "options" are basically FIU or Miami:

MCAT: Wait for it….a whooping 28. Phys Sci 8, Verbal 11, Bio Sci 9. Took twice, first time was 26, 8, 10, 8.
GPA: 3.9
Science: 3.7
Non Traditional (practiced law for a decade, attended top 5 law school)
Extracurriculars since deciding on career change: 100 hours in clinic, 100 hours in ER, currently working at hospital as research contract coordinator.
Extracurriculars in college: tons of leadership experience, TAs, etc. but none medically related.

Caucasian, Female. Will be Florida resident at time of application.

Thank you!
3.9 GPA, 28 MCAT, IS, Male, Caucasian, 1200+ research hours, 150+ volunteering, and leadership...haven't heard anything yet from FIU this cycle. But, still hoping!

Thank you. what was your breakdown?
You can get in with your score! But a couple more mcat points would sure go a long way in increasing your chances at this or any school. I am sure your experience as a lawyer will set you apart. Good luck! You should get MSAR.

Don't get me wrong, you can definitely get in with your stats and your background. I just suggested you consider retaking your MCAT since you only have 2 (3 if you consider NOVA) options at medical school.

Did people who got accepted receive their acceptance package?

Just a simple letter of acceptance? It has been nearly two weeks since I got the call and I received nothing. :O
That's weird :-/

To be fair, though, I got a letter of acceptance in the mail, and nothing more.

Thanks! I guess it is still on the way..? Also, how do I join the facebook group??

To anyone else who has been accepted, have you heard anything outside of the background check? Like how to pay the deposit and the likes

Me neither.
From discussion on this thread, and the feeling I got on interview day, seems like FIU has a lot of movement with regards to people declining acceptances, and the acceptance given to people on alternate list (and maybe even some of those acceptances are turned down, leading to other people being offered acceptance offers, even late into the summer?), so I think FIU decides to hold off on administrative stuff like that until the dust starts somewhat settling in April.

I've been at "preliminary review completed" status for a while now. Is this a pre-interview hold or anyone else in the same position?
It means they reviewed your secondary app. They assign points to it and give interviews based on that. Pretty sure they are done giving out interviews.

Do any current students have insight into where people usually live their first couple of years? Like downtown or near the school?

People live all over Miami. Some prefer living close to campus, some prefer Brickell, some prefer South Beach. It is all up to your preference.

A current student told me that people who aren't from Miami will tend to live in this one apartment complex near the university for the first year or two, and then, as the rotations in year three and four can be all over from Homestead to Ft Lauderdale, the proximity to the actual campus becomes mostly irrelevant and people spread out all over.

does anyone know if FIU supplies students with a tablet or something similar? i was debating buying a tablet before school for classes and such but idk if i should?

I believe on interview day they only mentioned a laptop. So my guess would be no tablet unfortunately

Does anyone know how long they interview until? I still haven't heard anything back after submitting my secondary

I called the admissions office today to see if interview invites were still being given out. I was informed that they're are still going through secondaries and to continue waiting. :-/

That is good news in my opinion. Thank you for the info!

Very much. See my previous post on waitlist movement for some hope 😉 Welcome to The List, my friend!

Thanks for the info. I hope we both get in. I wonder if there is a separate alternate list for OOS applicants. From the MSAR it seems that around 80% of the student body are chosen from a pool of around 2000 applicants (although this year there seem to be more) from within the state of Florida. This leaves around another 2000 OOS applicants, of which 20% are chosen. These students may be more competitive and are willing to pay double the tuition. However, I may be wrong. What do you think? Also, will there be a good amount of waitlist movement in March and April, or will the list mostly move in mid May after the April 30th deadline?

I don't think the waitlist is 2,000 candidates (if that's what you inferred). The waitlist is likely 500 candidates, or so (they're usually a few times larger than the class size). The list of 2,000 from the MSAR is the number indicated for TOTAL applicants, of which there were closer to 5,000 this year. As far as the timeline for waitlist movement, you can look at the waitlist threads from past years and see that things get underway after the deadline to relinquish extraneous class seats -- which is 2 weeks earlier this year: April 30th.

Thanks. Yea we are on the same page lol. What I meant to convey was that ~2000 oos applicants applied, ~150 were interviewed and ~30 matriculated. Was just asking if the lists were separate, but I guess there's no way of knowing. When I said 20% are oos, I meant ~20% of the class is oos.

Interviewed 2/13 and was the only out of state student that interview session. I was waitlisted yesterday. FIU is my number one pick. Let the waiting begin!

Got an email from the Financial Aid Office at FIU with an assigned Panther ID. Pretty sure everyone who fills out the FAFSA gets this, but--being a waitlisted student--a girl can still pretend like it's a positive sign 🤣

The most common apartment complexes nearby are Signature at Doral and Doral View. Other people live in brickell, SoBe, rent a house or another apartment complex nearby.

Does anyone know what they ask on the secondary as far as criminal history ? Do they ask for just convictions , or for arrests and charges ? Thanks !

I don't remember. They require a level 2 background check for matriculating students, besides the Certiphi screen. So I mean, everything's gonna show up on that. Don't know if that helps.
