Congrats!! Very happy for you HCMV, I have been keeping up with this thread for some time now. Thanks for posting and updating.

Your acceptance gives me hope, interviewed on Halloween and still not a peep.

I remember waiting for a call too-- I didn't hear back the day I was told I would, I heard the following week, and I was following SDN and kept waiting for my cell to ring all day and it didn't, hence I thought I wasn't accepted or something until 10 AM Wednesday morning when I got an email from MSU congratulating me. Turns out the call did come through though-- just not to my cell, as I expected it would, but to my parent's home phone.

Just wanted to share that to you all who might still be waiting for a call-- hopefully good news is in order 🙂
 
Interviewed on Halloween and was accepted today (by phone call, around 8)! Right now I'm leaning towards Wayne State, but I think my impressions were skewed by how hellishly long the interview day was at CHM. Does anyone know if there is a second look day, or something similar for MSU? I also haven't seen the GR campus, is there any way for me to schedule a tour?
 
I thought you could call them up and schedule a tour yourself. I was at the GR campus, but I really wish I had seen the EL campus as I feel that'd be a significantly better fit for me (I know a lot of people would disagree with this, but Grand Rapids is just too small/not diverse enough a city for me and not college-y enough too).
I'd like a second look day too!

I just remember that you were from Central and we had the breakfast and the MMI's together.

Hello everyone!

I got an e-mail today. I have been referred to the ABLE program. I still have a few other medical schools I interviewed at (Wayne: now my top coice), to see if I'll be accepted. If not, then hopefully I'll be accepted to the ABLE program. Now I'm at the point where I have a decision. It might not be my first one, but I want to be a physician, and an extra year is NOT going to kill me. I just have to possibly take a new path.

Congratulations to everyone that has been accepted! Good luck with the future as a physician!

Hopefully, I'll see you as a colleague one day! 🙂

cGPA: 3.8

Currently work full time in research lab (1000+) hours, two years part time volunteering in clinical setting and a decent amount of nonclinical volunteering in elementary schools, lots of shadowing (70+ hours). Sort of non-traditional applicant (i,e gap year, non-science major). I am happy to answer any specific questions but that's my stats in a nutshell. I do feel like my interview went very well though... so I am sure that helped as well.

Utah at the moment, although my residency is Wyoming. West/west coast! That's great congrats to you! Do you think you'll end up at MSU?

I interviewed at the Grand Rapids campus and absolutely fell in love with it. It would be incredibly hard to turn it down. The only concern I have is the possibility of ending up in East Lansing, since you interviewed there would you mind telling me about your experience?

I hope some of the current students at either campus might pitch in about the differences between the two campuses.

I did a year of my undergrad in GR, and the rest at MSU in East Lansing.

East Lansing is a college town through and through. There's some cool spots in EL/Lansing, like old town, eastwood, and they're putting up a new Whole Foods right down the street from MSU campus.
Edit* I also forgot to mention one of the best things about being at the EL campus- football. Tailgating and going to games is awesome.

Grand Rapids I see as more of a young professional city. You've got medical mile, Van Andel Arena, lots of cool restaurants, etc. Personally, I prefer this setting over EL, but I know plenty of others who feel the opposite.

What are the facilities at EL like? What is the proximity of housing to the CHM? What is the proximity of hospitals to the CHM? A key attraction of Grand Rapids was that it was next to 3-4 large hospitals and research institutions which from what I have heard made it incredibly easy to shadow or volunteer or get involved with hospital work.

I understand the CHM, COM, and CVM all take classes together in EL, is anyone able to speak to what this looks like and how much collaboration there is between students of the different colleges?

I interviewed at the EL campus, and the facilities are relatively old. It seemed like most of the classes were in the radiology/nursing buildings. There really wasn't a "CHM" building per say as there is in GR. Most of the people said they lived down the street, which is walkable and others just a short drive away.

Actually, I don't believe that CHM, COM, and CVM take classes together. They mentioned that they rarely if ever see the COM people. No one even mentioned CVM. Hopefully this helped a little. I'm sure a current student can elaborate more!

The facilities are older at the EL. This is to be expected, considering the GR campus was built only 7 or so years ago. Nonetheless, the facilities in EL are fine.

As Heplayer pointed out, there is no "CHM" building on the East Lansing campus. You'll take most of your classes in either Fee Hall or the Radiology building. Housing can pretty much be as close as you like. I know lots of students that can walk to Fee/Radiology from where they live, and others who don't like living that close.

Thank you for the answers Kyle! I saw you deferred a year, if you don't mind sharing, what was the reason?

What are study spaces like? I know in GR there are numerous dedicated study rooms that are only open to CHM students. Is there a gym or recreation center on the EL campus and do CHM students have access to it?

I can answer the second half! I interviewed at GR and then got a tour of EL after I was accepted.

There's a student lounge and study space for the CHM students, but to be blunt, it's not nearly as nice as GR. It's in a basement and there are no windows. So I guess good there's no distractions?

And there's an undergrad gym, but you have to pay for it. I think several of the apartments have their own gyms. And several students do IM sports!

Hey gang, I was looking at the MSU FAQ sheet today and I noticed a line saying any letters beyond the 3 LORs will be immediately discarded. Does that include update letters? I was hoping to update them with my GPA...
 
Been under preliminary review since mid-September...has anyone else waited this long without a status change? How long did you all wait before receiving the hold email? (Or any email at all?) Starting to think this is a silent rejection! :annoyed:

Same here, which is weird because by this time last year, I had already received a "hold for interview" email. I'm hoping it's not a silent rejection :-/
 
Does anyone know how common s silent rejection is? I submitted my secondary a little later in the cycle but I've been under preliminary review for a while. Keeping my fingers crossed. I love everything about this school.

That's what I'm trying to figure out too. I was complete relatively late as well (mid September) so I'm hoping that our apps are simply waiting in line for their turn and haven't been passed over! Best of luck to you, I feel the same way about MSU!

Hey guys, I have an interview February 13th. I will be in grand rapids the day before if anyone(s) would like to get some dinner!
 
Does anyone have any recommendations on the an affordable place to stay for interviewing at the Grand Rapids campus? What's the easiest way to get there from New York City? Is there a reliable cab service from the airport to the campus? I know some hotels offer free shuttle service, but I'm not familiar with the Grand Rapids area. Thanks!

I did Airbnb in Grand Rapids for my interview rather than staying in a hotel. The woman I stayed with was only a couple blocks from campus and she was super nice and accommodating. Here's her profile on the Airbnb website: https://www.airbnb.com/users/show/977134
There are obviously many other places around the area on this site too, but I'd definitely recommend one of her two listings. And I don't know about airports or shuttles around there though--I drove to Grand Rapids instead of flying.

I am currently in a gap year, getting clinical experience as a medical assistant at an Urgent Care (40 hrs a week) - LOR from lead physician

I also got LOR from a biology professor at MSU to fulfill requirement.

All letters were from very cool people (hint: I know they were friggen awesome)

I was not put on hold before being rejected today. What's up guys? Couldn't get an interview??

You sound like an exceptional applicant- extracurriculars, research, and stats are awesome.. I would have for sure thought you'd get an interview! Best of luck to you, hoping you get good news from another school!! Can't imagine how hard you worked to play a sport in college and get those grades...

Thanks a lot!! I know it's really competitive but to not even get an interview is disheartening. Anybody know how to meet with somebody who can critique your app as it was reviewed by the committee without having to fill out the self-assessment guide thing? Or if we fill it out, the advisor we meet with still has our entire app to review right?

I could be wrong, but I don't think that MSU CHM will critique your application, I think Wayne State is the only in Michigan that will do that. If you went to Michigan state for undergrad though, you can print off your entire application and bring your secondaries and speak with a preprofessional advisor! Just google 'msu pre med' and a bunch of reaources will show up for msu students. Also, if you used Kaplan, they have a person you can use, but you have to pay for a meeting with them

According to their website (http://mdadmissions.msu.edu/faq/pages/competitive_faq.php) it sounds like they do provide some feedback. Search the page for "Q: I was an unsuccessful applicant to CHM. Will the Office of Admissions help me develop a plan for reapplying?"

This is all about perspective. Think of it this way. They only have so many seats in a class, and only so many interviews to offer. They are sending out rejections left and right honestly. They didn't do that to you. They said, hold for interview decision. That means that there is something there that they like. At this point, they don't want to offer you an interview, but they want to compare you to a larger group as well. They offer interviews all the way through March, I believe. Last year, I had a friend who received the same e-mail. She was offered an interview in February, and was accepted less than a week after her interview. It does happen. Keep up hope.

this is me, i was complete august. havent heard a peep. just give me the rejection letter already if thats what it is!
