Nobody?

Great, more spots for me!

Applying OOS. Good luck!

Hiya. Rising M2 here. Went to undergrad here as well and grew up in a suburb nearby. Happy to answer any questions that come up!
Assuming you were accepted at other Ohio schools (or any other) what made you pick OSU over them?

Applying. 3.57 BCPM GPA, 35 MCAT, application approved on 6/11

Money and location. I was between OSU and Cincinnati and I wasn't very much a fan of the area around the Cincinnati campus. Having gone to UG here, I was far more comfortable with Columbus as well as OSU, and when they offered me a scholarship before Cinci did anything, I knew my choice was made.

It also doesn't hurt that OSU has a bitchin' gym in the RPAC and other respectable ones around campus, and a brand new hospital that will be available to us for rotations when that time comes.

On a more personal level, I felt I vibed better with prospective OSU students at second look versus that of Cincinnati - but this will vary based on you.

Planned on applying here but I see that A&P I and II are required for this school. That kinda sucks. :{

Oooh then that changes everything...although taking it summer prior is cutting it close don't you think?

Yes definitely... that's really my only option though, so if they don't accept it no point in paying for a secondary..

@IncognitoGuy Did any of your classmates qualify for IS tuition after the first year? Is it a difficult process?
You become eligible for IS tuition by becoming an Ohio resident, which is a very straightforward (though somewhat tedious) process that is done after first year. If the year before us is any indication, most of my OOS classmates will be able to qualify for IS tuition.

Many of my classmates + now-M3s also did the same thing. It's doable and accepted.

At what point do we have to indicate that we are intending to take A&P? Or is it assumed that, if accepted, A&P will be taken prior to matriculation?

If I remember correctly, the admissions office will e-mail you about your plans to take Anatomy.

Thank you!
OSU has a pretty big class - would you say you are close to your classmates? What is your opinion on PBL?

Hi! Sorry about the delay.

For a big class, I do feel I have gotten to know a good number of my classmates.

However, the beauty of a large class is that you are constantly meeting new people and learning more about the ones you are friends with. We hang out a lot (go out to dinner, bars, chill) and I find myself surrounded by a great group of people. Of course this is dependent on each class but from what I've seen of the older classes, they have a similar feel.

As for PBL, we don't exactly do that. We have TBL (Team Based Learning) in place of quizzes sometimes, which is basically a group quiz, broken down into two segments: the first concentrates on basic science and fact-based questions while the second segment focuses on clinical vignette-based scenario questions which are made to be more nuanced and entice discussion. You're assigned your group at the beginning of the year, and the entire class is broken down into two big TBL times.

So the difference here is that we are provided the information for TBL prior to sessions in the form of normal lectures and assignments. PBL, you are basically teaching yourself these lectures from what I understand.

As for my take, I do think it's a fun way to mix up how we apply our learning compared to traditional quizzes. However, it can be frustrating in that their delivery seems very cumbersome when professors administering TBLs feel the need to go through every single answer choice of every question and decide why it's right or wrong. They also do take up a healthy chunk of time during the day. Overall, I enjoy it.

Thanks! This is very helpful to understand the school environment.
How big are the TBL groups? Do you feel like everyone contributes meaningfully and gets along pretty well in their groups?

You said you've been in Columbus for a while; what is the atmosphere like? Good food? Any parks / places to enjoy nature? What is the public transportation like?

TBL groups are about ~10 per group. Like with many group dynamics, the groups vary wildly and are selected via a process we don't have a part in, so take that as you will. My group gets along well - I bring baked goods every TBL session to share and I've seen other groups collaborate in the same way. I have heard of one group with a less than cooperative member, but that definitely isn't the norm.

Columbus is great. Food here is awesome - between the Short North, German Village and the suburbs there is plenty of happy hour specials, more upscale places and everything in-between to enjoy.

EDIT: See here

As for parks, there is Goodale Park which is accessible from Campus and this is a pretty popular spot for people to hang out with their dogs and whatnot. The undergrad campus also has this between the Oval and re-opened South Oval, and hopefully Mirror Lake will be back to scratch in the future. The Franklin Park Conservatory is beautiful as well.

Public Transport here leaves a lot to be desired. The bus system is not very prominent, so we end up cabbing/driving or walking to a lot of places. For the amount you pay for the bus, it's not a very good value - especially if you're comparing the public transport to a city like Boston or Chicago. I dearly wish we had a Metro but I assume Columbus isn't at that level yet. Biking is also an option, and you see a lot of this as there's a big young adult/hipster-alternative crowd here.

EDIT: I see you also asked about atmosphere. Columbus has a diverse but strange kind of makeup - did you know it has the second-largest population of Somalians, after Minneapolis?

Also, I would say Columbus is a very open-minded city - its Pride celebrations last week are a good proof of that. People are also in general friendly/helpful. Even the panhandlers around campus are polite if you tell them you don't have any money.

I'm guessing no one's gotten a secondary from here yet?
Nothing here, last year the first post of 'secondary received' was July 5th. The prompts were

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr made the following statement: "Of all the injustices in the world, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane." Describe how you would like to contribute to ensuring quality healthcare for all people. (250 words or less)

The Ohio State University College of Medicine's mission is to "improve people's lives through innovation in research, education and patient care." Briefly describe how you aspire to further this mission, in whole or in part, as a medical student or as an alumnus of this College. (250 words or less)

Got the activation email but it's not working for me. Anyone else having issues?

Edit: nevermind, I just kept trying it and it went through.

Can you see the secondary? I set up my account but don't see anything there.

Me neither. Dang, this process is unnerving.

Someone please post the prompts! <3

So I don't know if the others have received the email that I have received, but it is not for the secondary. It is simply a portal for creating an OHSU account/ID. The email doesn't mention anything about the secondary really, just make your account as the first step. So don't worry. I'll update if anything more substantive comes through.

Oh, okay. Thank you. I haven't received whatever email everyone is getting, in any case. ^_^

Do they have a maximum amount of letters that they receive? They say that they require two and like more from people supervising you in extracurricular activities but no further explanation.

This account creation process is the most complicated process I've ever seen.... 5 security questions?? More intense than making a bank account jeez

Got the same email too. Activated my account, but no secondary yet.

so are they just gonna email us when a secondary is available.... made my account

Hey guys, I'm a little concerned. I want to use the security question "what occupation did you want to pursue as an adult?" But, do you think it would look bad if I put 'Dentist'?

/s

Wut...

Sigh...

When you activate your account you have to set up security questions. So I was making a joke, playing off the neuroticism of the application cycle, by suggesting that if I answered 'Dentist" to my own security question about what occupation I wanted to pursue as an adult- that that would somehow influence my application.

I guess I'll try better next time...

Anyone else having this issue? I'm in chrome

I was just about to say... I got it, but I can't log in. Different issue though; it just won't let me. Fab...

"Incorrect buckeyelink.erp.ohio-state.edu link
Please go to buckeyelink.osu.edu to obtain an updated link to the system."

The new link is no better because I can't log in. And I already did the activation thing.

More like buckeyelink.derp.ohio... ahem. Yeah, it's way too early for me to be funny...

You need to click on the new link and then scroll down and click application status (under admissions). Only problem is, in that screenshot I posted, there's a tiny window which makes it impossible to read anything

I fixed my issue, finally. Here y'all go. Time to get to the clinic, so I can't work on it now.
