2014-2015 Southern Illinois University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Here is the email:

"Southern Illinois University School of Medicine has received your Interview Scheduling Information. Please allow at least two to three weeks in order for us to schedule and confirm your interviews (unless you have chosen dates that are further in the future. We will be in touch with you as the dates you have chosen are a bit closer)"

I think I will just wait it out until the end of tomorrow and give them a call when I get the chance. Seems like they are very open to being contacted, regardless of the issue.

Anywho, I'm sure it'll all work out. I appreciate the insight!

Posted using SDN Mobile

They said in the original interview invite email that they would confirm a date approximately three weeks before the interview.

I don't agree with all of these as strictly rules of thumb. Someone with a 3.0/20, terrible ECs and poor interview skills can sit in PBL with us 100 times and probably won't get in.

Also, I didn't do any of these things and got in, and I'm from up north. Just sell yourself and how you fit the mission of the school.

And for those asking before, screened alternate status pretty much means no II, sorry to say :/

MD Class of 2017

I get what you're saying but I think you misunderstood me. Wasn't trying to insinuate one could score low and get in, or that these were strict rules of thumb. I was just giving advice on how to show interest in SIU to benefit one's application. SIU does a great job of looking at the whole application, not just your stats, but showing interest in this school only helps your application, getting you that super important interview. If I remember correctly, I think the secondary even asks if you sat in during a PBL session. With med school getting increasingly competitive each year, getting involved with any school before applying is pretty sound advice.

II 8/18. First one! Supplemental was mailed on 8/8.

Hey all I just interviewed yesterday and here is my synopsis and review of the day:

First thing to do upon arriving is to obtain your I.D. badge and temporary parking pass from the Security guards on the 1st floor. They are extremely nice and just ask you to sign in. Make sure that upon arriving you turn into the second parking lot/ driveway just north of the building as I turned into the first street just south of the med school building and had to walk through the courtyard to the second half of the building to get my badge. Once arriving head up to the second floor and Beth will be there to greet you and escort you into a conference room. Beth gives a presentation on the school and then answers any questions you might have, so have some prepared for then. Following that we were taken to our first interview (Beth walked people to interviews that were close by). Some of the interviews did have to travel so be prepared. Also something great to note is that Memorial is building two new floors onto their hospital that is going to be strictly for teaching and will be ready by 2015. It will have a simulated surgery floor along with various other teaching tools. My first interview was in Memorial, so I did not have to drive as there is a skywalk that connects the med school and the hospital. My first interview was with the Adcom (you can tell right away plus he told me) and it was surprisingly relaxed and conversational the entire time. Although other interviewers stated that this was not the case for theirs. Following the 1st interview we came back to the med school and had a financial aid meeting. Then we had lunch in the hospital cafeteria (6 dollar limit) and had a tour around the med school building which lasted about an hour total. My next interview was not until 2 o'clock and was again in Memorial so I did have some downtime. I headed over to Memorial a little early for the interview and was told by the docs office workers that he was in the OR and to come back at 230. More time to kill. Once the second interview started it did seem like the doc had other things on his mind besides my interview, and I do not blame him. He stated that he had already performed 4 surgeries on the day before my interview. I don't want to say I was disappointed about this, as it was nobody's fault, yet there was a little missing in the interview. After that I just turned my I.D. badge back in and left. Some general comments about the school are that everyone there is extremely nice and caring. One of the interviewers misplaced his car (forgot where he parked ) before his 1st interview, so Beth drove him to its location. It also gives off that small school feel like my undergrad did and they are looking for the right fit at the school not just the stats. I love the new additions being added to the local hospitals and I am glad that SIU will be able to take advantage of them. Overall the school really impressed me and I would say that it is my number one choice. I believe they said that their first Adcom meeting is Sept. 30th and they will send out AWPAs the next day (Beth said she comes into work early to insure they all get sent out that day). Then it's a waiting game until December :xf:

Wow thank you so much- this was really helpful!! I'm glad everything went well and best of luck to you.

A couple quick questions for you:

-How was the actual interview content? Was it quite tough or was it more of a getting to know your story, etc. feel?
-In terms of the campus facilities, asides from the new buildings, how is the feel of the campus? Is it relatively large? Is it new/modern?
-How many other interviewers were with you that day?
-Did you find out more about PBL?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Did you do a lot of preparation for your interview?

I did yes. I looked at the interview feedback and that was enough to prep me. I had one interview before this one so I had all my answers to the basic questions down.

1. For my interview it was more getting to know me/story with the both the adcom and the non-adcom. Only difference was that the adcom would ask me about specific things on my app while the non-adcom asked me more general questions. Again, my interview seemed to be different than others because others said they had scripted questions to ask and many were like the ones on the interview feedback site along with it being much tougher.
2. Campus has a friendly and small feel to it. I cannot speak for Carbondale, but that was how Springfield was. The building is a little confusing as it is basically one big circle and everything looks a like. I would say it might be a little outdated but not to where they are still using a stone and chisel to write things down. In short it isn't brand new (although the lecture halls looked great), but it is not old. I'm glad they put more investment into their partnership with the hospitals in the area than the med school building itself. It is not very large because it is basically one big building that connects to the hospital. And just typing this now I forgot to mention an important detail! They are completely renovating the library which students said was a great place to study. So that would be done by the end of the fall they said and they had the details all mapped out in the library as well!
3. 3 other interviewers besides me. Beth said 4 is tops ever.
4.Beth talked about it along with our tour guide and my interviewer did as well, but I actually learned most of what I know about PBL from interviewing at LECOM-Bradenton the week before and sitting in on a PBL session. Although in my adcom interview he talked about it more and talked about how there is a lecture portion that also supplements the PBL

I agree about the oldish feel of the buildings, but I wanted to note that along with the library, the patient exam rooms (PDL) you'll see standardized patients in are really nice.

Carbondale is a whole different beast than Springfield so it's hard to compare. They completely remodeled the anatomy lab this summer though so that should be nice and new for upcoming classes.

Would it be weird if I came with a list of notes about questions to ask at my interview? Or should I just try and remember them all

I just had my list sitting in my padfolio and asked them off of that. I don't think it would be weird

Is it safe to say once we are invited for interview, there is a 1/3 chance of getting accepted?

Is it safe to say once we are invited for interview, there is a 1/3 chance of getting accepted?

I think it's closer to 1/2 chance. ~150 acceptances and ~300 interviewed.

I was just in the anatomy lab today down here in Cdale and (although I've never been in another anatomy lab) it looks really nice. Everything looks new, lots of space, nice anatomical decor... Plus they're putting in new windows and updating the outside of the building you spend the majority of your time in right now. Although that's not finished yet, it's going to look more 'modern' than before.

Interviewed last week - thought it went great. This is my number one choice.

How was the interview? - TheCookieMonster000

Nice and casual. Lots of asking where I wanted to practice and why, there were three of us total and I bonded with one of them. I interviewed their last year, so there was a lot of questions about what I've done in the year. That was good, because I retook MCAT and got a higher score as well as enrolled in a Biochemistry Masters during the past year.

Met with two docs, first was a woman and she had my stats; the second was a very relaxed man who did not have my stats - I thought that was interesting..

Hi! I'm a current MS1 down here in Carbondale - starting our 5th week of classes! If you have any questions pertaining to the first part of school or Carbondale life feel free to ask!

Hi! I'm a current MS1 down here in Carbondale - starting our 5th week of classes! If you have any questions pertaining to the first part of school or Carbondale life feel free to ask!

How is living down in C'dale? How are the facilities? Are there places to study outside of the undergrad library? Also are there any clubs or organizations to get involved with?

Thanks!

Carbondale is awesome! There's so much to do it's hard to stay in and study. There's so many wineries, breweries, bars, farmers markets, hiking, state parks, lakes, fishing, antique shops, etc. And the food and restaurants are amazing! There are no chain restaurants downtown and everything is local and Carbondale shops are extremely locally proud and relatively cheap. There's still chain joints on the outside of town for your midnight tacos. The weather is great. Campus is a nightmare to drive on but easy to walk around.

The facilities are decent - the main building is a little run down and older on the inside but they're renovating the outside. The PDL rooms and cadaver labs are excellent. There is a med student only library on the third floor that has tons of books but little study space - most people study in their tutor rooms or in the regular library. Your first day of class you get keys to the building and a security pass that gives you 24hour access to your tutor rooms to study.

You're a student of SIU so you're able to join any regular SIU clubs. I'm on an intramural soccer team with other med students and we play against regular undergrad teams. Not many people I know join clubs but there's tons of interest in intramural sports. For fun we organize bar crawls and winery visits on the weekends.

The workload is insane but you have enough time to take one whole weekend day off of studying to refresh (usually Saturday). You are usually in PBL or lecture 8-3/4 Monday thru Friday and you're expected to self study each evening. On average I get home around 4, take a couple hours off to relax and eat and then study from 6 or 7 to 10 or 11 each night. It's almost harder to learn what to focus on to study rather than the actual material.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

If anyone is interested in visiting Carbondale at any point feel free to ask and I can give a tour of the campus and the popular hangout locations.

So to clarify- an AWPA is not an acceptance right? What is the idea behind AWPA or how does it work? Would love someone to clarify. Thanks in advance!!

AWPA- Accepted When Place Available. Basically you get put on a ranked list and acceptances go out in that order starting in December. Not all the people put on that list will get officially accepted either. Also, Beth in admissions said the last time the made it to the waitlist (separate list) to offer an acceptance was 8 or 9 years ago.

So basically, its AWPA or no luck this cycle. Also, what are the stats to get off of AWPA? As in, once you make it to AWPA, is there a good shot that you'll get an accceptance?

Thanks again for your insight!

Correct. I believe Beth told me during my interview that roughly 85% on the AWPA are eventually offered an acceptance. It depends, of course, on where you are on the list, but they will not tell you your rank.

Yeah that is what I have been hearing as well. I belive that includes a lot of movement at the muliple acceptance deadline

Secondary submitted 9/14. Form mailed 9/15. NW Illinois rural resident. How soon should I expect to hear back about an interview??

+1 - I got an e-mail about 2/3 days after submitting my secondary as well

Could anyone comment on how SIU does on their board scores (Step 1 and Step 2 first time pass rate and mean)? I don't have anything in my notes from my interview day and I couldn't find it on the website. Thanks!

We actually just had a lecture on grades and things this afternoon - they said that 92% of the class passes the Step 1 their first time through by a considerable margin. They told us today that the scores we get on the regular end of unit exams correlate about 75% to Step 1 scores so they really teach you to excel at the boards...only time will tell if that's actually the case!

Edit: The adcom meets Tuesday, and AWPA letters will be sent out on WEDNESDAY. You should have them by Friday.

Please wait for your letter and do not call admissions, they will not give you your application status over the phone.

I interviewed here on 8/26. It was super chill, very comfortable and an intimate experience, 1 on 1 interviews plus only 4 students taking the tour/ receiving briefings at a time.

Still waiting to hear back, though. I think I remember them saying that October 3rd would be the next admissions committee meeting?

Edit-- sorry, just saw the previous post. Looking forward to checking the mail this week.

Those of you who have interviewed at SIU: I received my II on 9/26 and chose dates the week of 11/10 and 11/14. I haven't heard anything yet, so should I call and see if they can confirm a date over the phone?

Edit: I just called and she was working on mine today and I should receive it tomorrow.

In anticipation of acceptance date questions, I would like to provide some information. The first 24 acceptance letters will be sent out after the admission meeting on NOVEMBER 25 (adcom mtg date not firm, but acceptances will likely arrive via email on/around Monday, December 1st and most likely not before). The adcom usually sends a hard-copy via snail mail, but they also send e-mails which you will probably receive first, usually early to mid morning so please check your email frequently that week. The title of the email I received was: "SIUMED:Application Notification (One Week)(my last name here)," though yours may be different. The "one week" indicates that you will have one week to reserve your spot in the class via a $100 deposit.

For those of you that are just starting to look at these threads and aren't familiar with the acceptance system, here is some info that can also be found in past threads: there are three "batches" of acceptances that are released in December, February, and March. A total of 72 spots are available. 24 will be "opened" on December 1st to the top 24 on the AWPA list. If one person turns their acceptance down, then there will be only 23/24 spots filled and number 25 on the AWPA list will then get an acceptance letter. If another turns their spot down, the 26th will get their letter. This will continue but be limited to 24 spots until February, when 24 more spots will open, and then in March with the final 24. As you can see, even if you don't get in on December 1st, if you are AWPA possible you will get in at any point from December 2nd onward up until the day classes start as your acceptance may be contingent upon someone else giving up their spot (most activity continues until mid-June, with the fastest movement of the entire cycle occurring in mid-March due to the multiple-acceptance deadline). From my class data, approximately 70-80 students do turn down their acceptance with about 150 in total being offered an acceptance. Bottom line: please DO NOT PANIC if you do not get in during the first batch, as only ~16% of accepted applicants will get in on that date.

One final note that Beth has probably made those of you who have already interviewed aware of: occasionally, those who have interviews just before the cut-off date for inclusion in the December acceptances. The cut-off date information is currently not available though it is likely sometime in late November. You will be informed during your interview if you make the cut-off date for AWPA/acceptance. If you are included, it is theoretically possible that you could receive your acceptance via email BEFORE you receive your AWPA letter, as AWPA is sent via snail-mail only. This is not a mistake, you are accepted if you receive the email.

I hope this information answers any questions you may have about the upcoming acceptances. As always, feel free to message me with more specific questions or concerns or post here if it is relevant to the general applicant pool. Good luck everyone :)

I'm very excited to be interviewing at SIU in a few weeks and I was wondering how soon after interviews are AWPA's released? Is it once a month or do they review on a more frequently?

Why is it so late this year compared to last year? Last year the first batch came out December 2nd. Do you know the reasoning behind it? Thanks Pasmal.
