Hi!

I was just wondering which apartments the med students typically live in? Do you have any recommendations?

Thanks!

(obviously I'm not Carpe-noctem, but I'm a MS1 and I had a list from last year, so I figured I'd share 🙂 )

Here's a list of apartments that was posted last year of some of the most common places that students live. I'd say most live in Fox Chase, Chelsea Place, Quail Hollow, or the Ridge, which are all on the expensive side, but also very nice and most have a lot of amenities. The other very popular place is Heather Village, which is a condo complex.

All of the neighborhoods that these are in are very safe, but there are also some areas that aren't, so make sure that you keep that in mind - some of the really cheap places are cheap for a reason. If you have any other questions, let me know!

rejected today pre-ii. Considering I could have made another human in the time since I last heard from Toledo, I'm not surprised!

I'm shocked! Rejected pre-II this morning. Was really expecting an interview at this time...

What's the reason for this? If they're doing it to protect anonymity, that would be silly since the majority of residency programs post a list of current residents and their medical school on their website.
Not an anonymity issue, but more along the lines that the school can't consistently say students are matching at certain select (and/or prestigious) institutions because those successful match results may have been due to the individual student(s) being proactive about the application process/CV building/academics than the school itself.

Word of warning about Fox Chase.... all of their apartment amenities such as kitchen stove/dishwasher/washer/dryer are very very old and somewhat reliable. If you live on the first level be prepared for bugs if your unit is situated near alot of grass/wooded area. Living on the second level is a toss up since the insulation on the units are not the best and heating can become expensive during the winter months. I have heard of issues with their management but I personally have not had any issues (although I will be leaving after this year)

Ugh....when I search online it seems like EVERY complex has a problem :-/

I get really excited about a place, then check out their reviews and... eh.
Check out a few of the places up in Sylvania! They aren't "popular" among students, but you can find some really good, quiet places that are equally as close to school (and even closer to where you might be rotating 3rd year). Feel free to PM me if you want more info!

This article may shed some light on why you all are having issues with your apartment search: http://www.toledonewsnow.com/story/28893350/msn-toledo-second-most-miserable-city-in-america

UTCOM is #2 reason why Toledo isn't too bad--coming in second to the Toledo Zoo. But, I mean obviously we can't compete with this:

Welcoming as Toledo is, today I have had to make another choice. Wishing success and joy to all of you--hope you're on your way to a good education and a satisfying career!

Anyone know if the final decision deadline being moved up from 5/15 to 4/30 will get the ball moving sooner on wait list prioritization/acceptances?

Does anybody know if Toledo is open to letters of update? I achieved a 4.0 my senior year and about 60 more hours of community service with 200 more hours TAing. I've seen @Goro mention that one thing that could help in getting off waitlists would be the good grades. I am considering emailing something tomorrow if it would help my case. This would be my second post interview update BTW.

I have heard that they are receptive to letters of update Post Interview, so that clearly applies here! My unprofessional advice is that if you have something significant to add to your file then go ahead an send in an update. So if this " I achieved a 4.0 my senior year and about 60 more hours of community service with 200 more hours TAing." is new info to the school, I would send in an update. Goodluck!

can any students comment on this? I know 2 ppl at UT and they said they didn't know anything about it till today. Is that true?

This was just announced yesterday. If you have any questions http://www.utoledo.edu/med/partnership/faqs.html would probably answer them.

From a current student perspective, I think this is great for us the students (current and future) because one of the issues I have noticed is the lack of mentorship offered during clinical years as there are only so many physicians that are a part of UTMC. This affiliation is essentially an expansion of a pre-existing relationship that had already been in place between UTCOM and ProMedica; as MS3s we already rotate thru Toledo Hospital which is Promedica's flagship hospital. imo the infusion of capital from ProMedica will only better the student experience at the school.

Ya I agree but it says that won't happen for years? The article just talked about how badly the hospital's doing and how the school really needs money. I thought most ppl there end up matching at UT?

I spoke with someone on admissions several weeks after my interview and they told me I was high priority on the waitlist. Does anyone know if they send anymore specific details in terms of the wait list?

On their website it says they will send an update but on the email informing us of waitlist status it doesn't mention sending out any updates...It just says
"Alternate candidates who receive acceptances will generally receive this notification between late May and late July of 2015." Wish they would tell us more, I'm dying here!

Has anyone had a chance to visit any of the apartments listed above?

Hello Everyone,

I'm consider applying to Toledo. I heard that, for OOS residents, it is easy to establish in Ohio state residency after a year and qualify for instate tuition the rest of your medical education. Is this true at Toledo as well?

Yes

I interviewed on 4/23 and got accepted on 5/13. Super thankful as its been my only acceptance. On 2 waitlists. OOS

I inquired about my location on the waitlist via e-mail and this was my response from Christine Wile this morning:

Thank you for your continued interest in The University of Toledo Medical School. The Committee has not yet reviewed the Alternate/Waitlist list.

Hoping the high priority/low priority e-mail is coming soon!! Getting anxious here..

Anyone hear anything about scholarships yet?

Their admissions process is a little confusing. It is June, and they have not reviewed the waitlist which seems like they are getting started really late in the game. Yet they have already accepted applicants off of their waitlist. Seems a little backwards.

The committee this week is reviewing current MSBS students that will matriculate in the fall as MS1. After this is done (by sometime later this week), the committee I believe will then again review the waitlist (as well as placing those MSBS students that did not receive immediate MD admissions acceptance on the waitlist).

also curious how is the student/social life outside of school, does student government host any formals or events?

Yes! Besides unofficially organized bar nights after exams, there are plenty of official things to go to. The club I'm president of (well now former but w/e) has a party/fundraiser. Many other students orgs also have parties. Can't miss the AMA halloween party!

I get really excited about a place, then check out their reviews and... eh.

Go to Chelsea Place. I've left Fox chase for Chelsea Place. It's more expensive, but soooo worth it. It's not much further, and the amenities and age of the units is fantastic. If you (or anyone else) plan to live at Chelsea Place PM me. We can split the referral bonus.

I think it's going to be pretty soon that we'll have more access to Promedica hospital. It's very good for us, trust me. UTMC is a small hospital and can't handle the size of our classes. UTMC has an ED patient flow in the neighborhood of ~30-35k/yr, Toledo Hospital is nudging up to 100k. Although it was previous an option to do some rotations at TTH, this will allow us to do way more. There are also tons of other hospitals in their system, and they don't have residents. I had always been baffled by that. Not anymore! I'm really really excited about it. Also, no, most UT students do not match at UT. Surprisingly few actually.

Be patient. If you're high priority I'd be shocked if you didn't get it. I would say the bulk of the acceptances off the waitlist went out in early-mid June for my class.

If anyone has more questions fire away. I take step 1 Friday so be patient if I'm slow to respond haha.

Thanks for the kind words! Good luck on step 1 🙂

I heard that they are not accepting anyone off the waitlist this year because the class is already full due to a large MSBS group

Sounds fishy to me. They've always accepted a ton of MSBS students and still had room for waitlist acceptances.

anything new here? sent an update with grades a while ago, wondering if it's time to send an LOI

Has anyone been accepted off the wait list or has anyone heard anything recently from admissions in terms of the spots on the wait list, etc?

I just called yesterday. The person I spoke with said that there has not been any wait list movement yet. Judging from past threads, they are probably looking at MSBS students right now.
