2014-2015 University of Alabama Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm applying here this cycle. I'm really excited about this school! Are there any current medical students willing to dish out some secondary/interview advice? Especially OOS students?

A lot of it is essentially reiterating what is on your AMCAS. There is also a question about where you see yourself in 15-20 years, one asking if there is anything else you'd like to tell them that is not on the AMCAS, one about how you would add diversity to their class, and one that asks if you consider yourself "rural" and if you do why.
Good luck to everyone!

For the rural question: If I say that I consider myself "rural" and AMCAS said that my county is "urban", what are the consequences?

I'm not sure that there are any consequences but you would obviously have to explain why it is you would be considered rural and not urban.

anyone still waiting on feedback from the previous cycle? Also for reapps does it really matter if we apply late because they don't look at our applications until January anyways.

I am am undergrad student at UAB now and i agree with Lionking2014. UAB is rarely on time with anything they do, i just hope secondaries come out before september.

MSTP II yesterday, but no MD secondary yet (MSTP has a separate secondary pre-interview).

Nothing. I'm thinking they will send secondaries Monday.

I haven't heard anything. From my understanding, they only screen out non-US citizens. So everyone should be receiving a secondary

Even got the elusive drexel secondary, get it together UAB

Got a II for MDPhD today! Does anyone have any advice for the interview or secondary? I'd really appreciate it - thanks

What's happening guys, getting worried no secondaries are out

They're the same thing. Congrats on your II!
Thanks!

Since most schools go through MDPhD applicants first for deadlines and acceptances maybe there's a small delay between that and regular MD releases? Someone whose been around the process longer probably knows better though

Hi all,

I was also invited for an MSTP interview. UAB has a separate "supplemental form" for MSTP applicants that is filled out pre-interview invite. If you receive an interview, then you fill out the UAB SOM secondary. I have not received any info for the SOM secondary yet, so I hope we're all in the clear still 🙂

UAB adding an MMI to the interview process

Nothing here yet.

Some of my friends have already received acceptances from UMMC in Mississippi while UAB hasn't even sent out their secondaries yet. Funny how some schools operate on completely different schedules.

I guess, to pass time, we could post stats to see who we're competing with :angelic:. I'll start:
  • MCAT: 33
  • cGPA/sGPA: 3.70/3.88
  • Residency: OOS
  • Extracurriculars: average
  • Shadowing/Clinical experience: below average (<100 hrs)
  • LORs: above average
  • I'm also a reapplicant who's taken the MCAT multiple times, so however that affects me..
Anyone else?

Congrats! I'm interviewing end of October, best of luck to you - seems like the MSTP students at Bama are pretty happy/chill people

I thought schools weren't supposed to send out acceptances until October 15th?

Huh...still weird. I thought AAMC guidelines say that those are released October 1st. Maybe UMMC doesn't follow them.

UMMC definitely follows them. October 1st is the 'notification deadline' for the school, meaning they have to let you know before then.

Finally received the secondary, and I hate it already. You basically have to regurgitate all of your AMCAS Activity Descriptions but in greater detail. Luckily I have essays from other schools ready to recycle, but filling out the activities will be a doozy...

I agree, I have filled out 4 other secondaries already and if i were to combine all of them into one, it would still be shorter than UAB's secondary.
Also, i dont understand if they want me to elaborate more on my AMCAS work and activities or just make sure they're correct.

I think it's a mixture of both. Judging by the detail involved in this, I don't think they're gonna bother looking at AMCAS at all; they like things being done to their own specifications. They might cross-reference if there's a discrepancy. So now I have to write more for my non-significant activities, and write less for my significant ones. I also need to describe each shadowing experience by specialty, which is annoying.

I just emailed with the UAB admissions office. Apparently they are releasing the secondary invites in batches, and aiming to get them all sent out by the end of this week.

Congratulations UAB. You made an extremely difficult secondary to manage.
