I had a lot of trouble with this one too. It's hard to find something you've truly failed at when you're (potentially) only 21 years old.For this prompt, does failure in lab research count as non-academic?
Discuss a time in your life in which you have failed at something other than an academic experience. How did you confront the failure and what did you learn from it? When faced with a challenge in your life, how has thinking it over allowed you to move forward?
Try and think of something that you regret. Maybe something you wish you would have done. You can try and spin it off as a failure in some sense, at least for the purpose of this essay. I don't think they're going to be that critical and toss your application if this one essay isn't perfect. I think they're just looking for some self-reflection.
