2014-2015 University of Arizona Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I recently received an interview invite, could someone explan what the groups mean? we are given a few groups. Do we choose between them or are we automatically assigned? I dont want to click one without knowing what it'll do or what it means.

Also, can anyone tell me a little about the MMI process at this school and what to expect? Obviously nothing super detailed, but are they controversial or conversational?

Has anyone received any interview invites/hold emails recently?!?!?!?!?

I just got (what I interpret as) an interview hold today (complete 8/13). A bit disappointing because last year I got an II right away. Makes me paranoid that they don't think I improved enough this year or something.

I was complete 7/19 and put on hold 8/22. I didn't send an email yet just in case that status changes. Should I send them an email updating them on what I've been doing? Or should I just keep waiting? I know that some schools frown on such emails, but I can't find anything telling me not to contact them.

You can always call and ask the Admissions office if they accept updates. But it's also pretty early in the cycle - make sure you've got something substantial to update with if they accept them.

I'm sorry buddy! You are definitely still in this though. Are you in state of out of state, if you don't mind me asking!

From what I saw, it's according to the time you selected your interview at. So, if you chose 7:15 A, you're in group 1, etc.

Pre- interview hold... Bit disappointed Lizzy m ~76....but other interviews will keep me busy for the next few weeks

No email for me. I was complete 7/7. I got a hold exactly one month ago but nothing since then. I'm afraid I'm on my way to rejection despite being interviewed last cycle.

Haha, thanks! I appreciate it! And I'm OOS. It's such an awesome school, though. I really enjoyed my visit. I'd love to have the chance to try again! Best of luck to you in the cycle!

First-time poster! II! So excited! Does anyone know if they will open up more dates?

hold for me today. OOS so not super surprised haha

Hey all!

What kind of a picture are you guys posting for the interview invite? Are you getting them professionally done? Sorry if this is an odd question:-/

I have a passport picture from costco I've been using. I just wanted to schedule my interview, I wasn't about to go get a picture done lol

They told us at our interview day that they do not accept updates or letters of intent.

A nice picture can be taken on an iPhone (or similar). It's what I did for all the schools that requested photos. Just make sure that you're dressed professionally, since adcom's will see this picture.

II yesterday. Wait-listed here last year.

IS, MD/MPH applicant. 32/3.5c/3.6s. Nontrad, Military Vet, well traveled, Master's Degree, tons of extracurriculars - research, nonprofit founder, clinical and nonclinical volunteering in US and abroad. Complete mid-July, pre-interview hold mid-August.

just a question were either of you who got II's yesterday on hold? Or were you just complete?

I interviewed here last year. The groups are how they split up the tour and the MMI session. About 20 per group if I remember correctly, and then split into two smaller groups for MMI. Allows you to choose the most convenient time as well.

There's still hope! I received 4 interview invites this week - 3 of the 4 I was complete in July...

Fear not. Lots of interview days left!

Interviewing at AZCOM in about a week... I'd like to see Tucson. Arizona is nice. It's too bad that AZCOM doesn't have as many rural connections as UA, though, and no combined MPH 🙁

Good! Maybe there will be two of us in this class 😉

kk thought so thanks! I'm originally from AZ but not a resident anymore. Totally praying for an II here!

+1. On hold

For anyone that gets a "hold" email, don't lose hope. I was put on hold on the 16th of August and got an II today. I think the hold email is better than not getting a response at all. I interviewed at the Phoenix campus on Monday, so I am excited to see what Tucson is like. Good luck to everyone applying to medical school.

My husband received an interview invite last night. He was complete 8/4. He is IS and non-trad. Good luck to you all!

A lot of people have said that the MMIs are fun, but I don't know why, I'm just so nervous :-/ This will be my first MMI!

Anybody know how many people UA-Tucson plans on interviewing this cycle? I think they interviewed around 600 last year. But I think they have more interview dates this cycle?!?

Hey guys I figured you would all be interested in the selection process over the past 2 years here is the break down - read them both because there were small changes from year to year. On the bright side once you get an interview your chances of getting in are 33%
Also of those disadvantage applicants make sure you look at the 2014 P-MAP program
Good luck

You say 33% like it's a good thing. Those odds are terrible. Do you really think that people want to go out to Tuscon for 33% chance of acceptance (which includes the wait list)?

Deleted - Sorry guys I'm not gonna put up w/ Jackasses like "CPlstan" so this is my last post. Good luck to those who truly deserve it.

There are over 4000 applicants to "Tucson" as you say it.... so ya 33% odds are pretty damn good. And if your too good for a 33% chance your probably wouldn't fit in here anyways. Maybe try Harvard I hear their odds are much better - and you seem to have the personality that would fit in there PERFECTLY.
Have a wonderful evening!

Count the number of reapplicants in here, lately?

If they chose you, god knows what they're looking for.

I know you "deleted" it but I saw what it contained and it was very helpful. So for that, thank you!

Do you still have those docs in your browser history? Could you please PM them to me? It's a shame they got deleted, they had some really uplifting and interesting material... 🙁

Compared to the spectrum of medical schools in the US, a 33% admission offer to interview rate is pretty standard.

So after we interview, are we accepted based primarily on the interview?

For those who have read these...

Any guesses as to how the full 'wait list' is made up? Perhaps it's those that were 'considered and ranked by the full committee' but were not offered admittance off the bat?

So, for example: in 2014 234 went to committee, 180 were offered outright admittance; leaving 54 on the official wait list.

Obviously I'm speculating here. What do you think?

After reading the docs, seems those who get an average score of ~2.8 - ~3.5 are waitlisted and those who receive 3.5+ get immediate acceptances. This is my rough assessment, and I am guessing there are many more 3-4s then 4-5s.

That was my guess initially as well. I think the remaining 54 individuals that were reviewed by the full committee made the waitlist.
