2014-2015 University of Arizona Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got counseling from a medical school I was rejected from (not U of A) as to why they rejected me. They said that after my interview they looked at me as an entire applicant and said I wasn't well rounded enough- all things from the interview set aside. I'm sharing this because I think it's similar at most medical schools. But I do think that some medical schools give interviews to those they already want to accept (they're just making sure you're not crazy or socially inept). I think U of A is not one of these - they like to chose the best candidates that fit their school from a large amount. Sucks for the 66% who get rejected that travel there for nothing 😛.

Hey guys,

Anyone know roughly how many interview invites UA-Tucson plans on sending this cycle?

Wow so roughly the same number of invites as last year with WAY more applications this year! Seems like AdCom will have a difficult time screening out close to 90% apps just for II

This is what my interview group was told too.
I don't remember, off hand, how many apps they said they got last year...maybe like 8,000? But, yea, they were expecting a lot more this year so it must be a task!

For those who got interviews recently, when are they? I'm just curious as to how filled up U of A is since I was put on hold.

Oh it wasn't 8,000 last year, it was only like 4,861;-)

They have a full list (interviews roughly once a month until Feb) on their website somewhere but the only date they had available (Sept 27th) when I signed up through the portal last week.

Do they send IIs once every two week on fridays?

+1, I scheduled mine last Friday and that was the only option

That's probably right, then. I couldn't remember. Still a lot to sort through!

True, but the Admissions team said they had already received 4,000 applications during the first Applicant Visit Day this year. Safe bet to assume they will have close to 6,000 this year.

Wow, that's crazy! Did they say if they were planning on accepting roughly the same amount of applicants this year as well? Around 200?

They did not mention anything about how many they would acceptances they would offer but I would assume they would have roughly the same amount of interviews and acceptances as before. Just A LOT more applications to review for potential IIs.

anyone else receive II after a hold lately? I got hold 8/22 ready to get that invite!

Someone in my group asked exactly that and the rep from the Admissions Office said she thought the numbers would be pretty much the same...

I called today after reading your post since I did not have a letter from a physician or a volunteer coordinator. They said that a PI is great, but the committee really likes to have a letter form a coordinator or physician. Luckily I was able to get in touch with a physician I had shadowed and they wrote one and just now uploaded it to AMCAS for me. Does anyone know how long it takes for schools to receive letters from AMCAS once they have been designated to be sent to a specific school?

I know you posted this a while ago but:

will they accept a letter from research PI and simply "prefer" a letter from a volunteer coordinator or medical professional, or will they not look at your application without such letter? Thanks!

I was wondering if anybody who interviewed attended the pre-reception held the day before interview? The program for the pre-reception lists a mini tour and meet and greet with medical students. Is it "recommended" or important/helpful?

If by "recommended" you mean will it have any bearing whatsoever on you being accepted? Then no. It's just an opportunity to talk to students and tour the ASTEC simulation lab.

It can't hurt....

Any ideas as to when the first round of acceptances will be sent by UA-TUCSON? I know the date is October 15th for most schools, but reading last year's thread, it looks like they don't start offering acceptances until November?!?!?!

They said mid-October but there's no telling.

Hey guys!

Anyone who was put on-hold in early to mid September receive an interview invite yet?

Man, I really like this school. :corny:

Does anyone know if UofA-Tucson accepts update letters?

At my interview they said they do not accept any updates or letters of intent and they seemed to mean it.

OOS from the East Coast, recently received a II for MDPhD - I apologize if this was addressed, but can some locals give some pros/cons of Tucson?

Pros: lots of outdoor activities, great climate (IMHO,) lots of great food and culture but you have to seek it out.

Cons: big town that pretends it's still small. Transportation can suck at times. Bad schools if you have a family.

Good luck to everyone interviewing today. How did you guys/gals like the MMI? I'm interviewing in October and it's my first MMI:-/

Don't even trip! I interviewed yesterday and it was my first one. I was nervous about the MMI but I actually liked the style. The time flies by and it's kinda fun.

One of the students pointed out that with an MMI you have less than ten minutes at each station, so if one person out of the several people you interview with doesn't view you favorably, it may not carry as much weight as it does in a traditional interview. It was a refreshing way to look at it and definitely relieved some of my stress.

I really like the school and had a great day overall 🙂 I'm hoping for good news sometime before May! Lol

For anyone who interviewed this past weekend, did they tell you anything about when to expect the first round of admissions decisions?

Yup! The first round are expected to go out the last week of October. I believe they said they reviewed applications on a bi-weekly basis after that. Please correct me anyone if I'm wrong.

Are only the September groups considered for this 1st round of acceptances? Also, did they say how many they plan on accepting per round?

I thought it was bimonthly?

Oh yeah that's what I meant lol! Twice a month, once every two weeks not twice a week. Sorry!

Hi everyone,

I am interviewing here in a few weeks and it will be my first MMI. Are there any traditional questions asked during the MMI (or is it mostly situational-based and real playing)?

You'll probably get one or two more traditional questions, yea...
