2014-2015 University of Arizona Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did anyone from 2/28 get in? Also, did everyone get this alternate list email or were there some straight up rejections?

Well this school was not looking for in-state dudes with stats above their 90th percentile. Whatever. Would've appreciated an actual response 6-7 months ago though.

I know someone with a 3.75/37, IS with amazing achievements who did not get an interview... you're more right than you know I think!

Ugh I also received the possible alternate list email. They really like making us suffer!

Wait listed. No information on my wait list position, or how many people are on the wait list. The mystery continues.

If anyone is curious, I believe 29 people got in off of the wait list last year, not that that information helps much without knowing where you are on the list. But that's quite a bit of movement. Hang in there fellow wait residents!

Rejected.

Don't want to be on the alternate list. Going to Creighton University School of Medicine. It's the better school, plus I am a little worried about being part of restructuring under Banner and skyrocketing tuition under governor Doug Ducey and a state legislature that doesn't care about higher ed in AZ. Best of luck - especially to those who are going to reapply. As a reapplicant I can tell you UACOM will not help you figure out what can be improved on your app so make sure you talk to your pre-med advisors (even if you graduated years ago) and figure out what schools will talk to you about your app.

Well, they finally gave me the axe. No matter; you'll all still have me as a colleague, regardless.

All you OOS-ers: Please enjoy the state tax subsidies I have helped provide that school for almost two decades and my family for decades before! I mean, it's only fair...after all, look how well AZ applicants fare in CA, UT, NM, and NV!

Good luck to all and I'll see you down the road 😉

Rejected. But you know what was the biggest slap in the facce?

THIS:
"We hope that by notifying you of our decision at this time, you will be able to direct your efforts towards other medical schools or perhaps the new application cycle beginning in June."
I wasn't counting on anything, but it's already pretty late...

IS + 3.95GPA + 31 mcat + 10 acceptance update emails = rejection #whiteboyproblems

Diversity is greatly needed in medicine. A medical school application is more than just the sum of your academic statistics. It isn't because you are a white male that you didn't get in, it is just there are too many qualified applicants. I understand this post was probably made in a moment of extreme disappointment. Reapply, I had to do it, chances are you didn't get in because of chance.

Let this be a teaching moment in #MicroAggression.

Dat wording.

Smfh.

I mean, the whole email basically read "get f**ked and leave us alone," but that bit really made me angry.

I know PLENTY of people (myself included) who received timely rejections from other institutions, giving them plenty of time to figure out other things. This rejection (in mid-April) isn't so timely.

Rejected Lizzy 71 IS. Is it safe to assume something did not go well during the interview? I felt good about it after it was over, but maybe I was wrong to feel so. Absolutely loved the school and all of the students I spoke with on interview day. Very confused over the outcome...

Different schools look for different things. UACOM really emphasizes diversity and community service (though other things are also important, of course). It's possible that they felt that you were lacking in areas outside of your Lizzy scores. There is also a ton of variability in the process and it's possible that you just got unlucky this year. With ~650 interviewees, there are so many variables, and you never know exactly what it is that will catch the eye of the admissions board.

Figured, I'd create an account and chime in after watching this thread all year.

First off, Wow this might be the saltiest application thread on SDN right now.... I understand that people are disappointed but jeez. If you makes you feel any better I was rejected from 5 of my state's schools, no interview. Med School applications are competitive try not to take it personally ( I know I was impressed by the caliber of applicants I met when I interviewed at UA).

Rejection today, after many acceptance update emails. OOS, early interview, strong stats, oh and URM (for those of you who seem to think your lack of acceptance is somehow linked to your skin color). Either way I'm going elsewhere. Hope you all have a backup as well. The UA method of scoring is fair, if you got rejected like I did, thats tough just means scored lower than others.

Congrats to those accepted thus far!

URM, high stats, rejected from your state's schools. Definitely a Cali guy, huh? C'mon though, getting rejected from Stanford, UCSF, UCLA, UCSD, and USC isn't the same thing. Those schools are all super-competitive nationally reputed schools with average MCATs 35+.

Also FYI, just because they give you a numerical score doesn't mean it's fair. It's likely that their subjective score is unfair, but so is life--so no use complaining about it. And nothing wrong with feeling you deserved a spot but got done dirty. Salty is one way to see it, fine. I see it as lighting a fire up under me. MJ or Brady weren't salty--they channeled it for greatness.

You are an accepted med school student. Just like me you are going to have to deal with it. We are going to be MDs, no need to harbor bitterness. URM rode is no easier due to societal barriers.

Few things
1) the whole point of my post was that we should be dealing with it and not complaining i.e. channel anger/disappointment positively. Like MJ.
2) URM road is tougher overall, never would argue against that. But a URM who was able to get high stats is much more likely to be accepted. If you don't agree with that, you're not thinking properly.
3) your gif sucks.

Fair enough.

Maybe I should have said 'more transparent' instead of 'fair'. UofA is still the only school I've seen who divulges their evaluation method.

Best of luck, sounds like you are going to be a doctor regardless. :horns:

Waitlisted! Interviewed 2/7, hoping for the best!
Best of luck to everyone still in and everyone applying in the 2015-2016 cycle!

Any accepted students for sure attending and looking for a roommate? The FB group doesn't seem particularly active. does anyone know if the group activity picks up after April 30?

The group seems pretty active to me. I would just pose the question there, and follow up through a PM if anyone shows interest. There are a few students who have been posting listings for a few weeks now.

Yeah I guess I'll follow up on there. I know a lot of people are already local so they don't have to move or find a roommate.

Does Tuscon give sub loans, scholarships or other fin aid besides federal loans?

You would have been/will be notified of any scholarships along with your acceptance letter. Otherwise, they just offer federal loans

I have been rejected a third time now. IS, 3.8+ gpa and >33 MCAT. First two application cycles, I applied to 1 school – UACOM Tucson. Luckily, I applied broadly this cycle and received 8 acceptances after applying to 10 allopathic schools (and good schools too). The only schools that failed to invite me to attend? My state schools. This application process needs to change at Arizona. It shouldn’t matter the connection the applicant has with the dean or someone on the admissions committee. I’m sorry, but that’s wrong.
And why is UA so interested in filling >20% of its class with OOS students? Is it the money? I am telling you that there are thousands of well-qualified applicants from AZ that want to eventually practice in AZ.
Please tell me that I’m not the only one who feels this way? Let’s get the UACOM’s attention on this forum!

Agree with you completely.Congrats on you other acceptances!! I will be an IS reapplicant next year as well. Just out of curiosity, were you offered an interview during any of the 3 cycles?

Totally understandable frustration. To be fair, though, this is a problem faced in the UC system as well, and I'm an OOS accepted student with no connections to the UACOM dean or admission committee. This whole process is such a crapshoot, it's really unfortunate 🙁

Congratulations on a successful cycle!
