2014-2015 University of California - Davis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I wrote that I was interested in academic medicine (I want to eventually become a clinical professor and teach medicine) in both my personal statement and part of a secondaries question. UC Davis is my top choice school, so I was very fortunate to receive an II (=.
Congratulations! I hope I'm on the same boat, I was complete 7/7 and still nothing and UC Davis is one of my top choices 🙁(

Thanks for the reply And good luck on your interview!

If you don't mind sharing, when were you complete?
Complete on July 15th due to last letter of rec being extremely slow, everything else was in a week before that (not sure if that matters). II received July 23rd.
IS 3.75 cGPA 3.9 sGPA and 33 MCAT pretty good ECs and currently working as a scribe.

I was complete on 7/9 (though my last letter didn't get in til 7/10) and haven't heard anything from Davis. Pretty bummed because it's one of my top choices. I'm worried I wasn't reflective enough in my secondaries or something. C'est la vie I guess though. Congrats to everyone with IIs!

+1

don't lose hope! A lot of my friends that applied last year got interviews later on in the process after submitting early... keep your head up!

Oh man, I was complete on 7/11 and haven't heard anything 🙁 I was hoping that taking part in the pre-med internship at UCD would help but instead it made me love the school only to face probable rejection

Is it ideal to interview on october 2? it's the only date i saw so far kinda worried - usually it's ideal to get backup school interviews first any suggestions?

Congrats on all the new interview invites guys, you're gonna like the interview at Davis. If you guys have any questions, let me know. I'll be happy to help. Be warned that we are about to start classes and it'll probably be some time for me to respond back in the thread.

Anything I can do after submitting he secondary to add something? I completely forgot a really important EC. :/
Unfortunately, no. UC Davis doesn't accept updates of any kind unless they notify you directly.

If there is any advice you can give about the interview without breaking confidentiality, it would be super helpful. Thanks.

Hey F.Underwood. Another MS1 here. I would recommend watching a video by Dr. Sousa and Roy titled "How to be successful in the MMI." Lots of good advice from the people who implemented the MMI at UCD.

Thank you!!

Do they email you if your application status changes, or do I have to keep neurotically checking?

Does anyone know how to sign up for the medical school student thing after scheduling the interview?

I called the Admissions Office last week and they told me they would send another e-mail about 1 week prior to your interview to sign up for the student host program (=.

How long did the payment status take to update for you guys? I submitted mine a couple hours ago and it hasn't updatedd

In checking the Davis website, I strolled over to the FAQ's (for no reason, I submitted my secondary almost two weeks ago) and, to my horror, realized they wanted us to treat present/continuing activities' end dates differently than AMCAS did. But they let me forward-date the activity end date, so I did for August 2015.

Am I now a hopeless cause because I couldn't follow directions found in the FAQ? 🙁 Combined with the fact I had been waiting for a specific recommendation to be completed (which I later gave up on, assigned a different one to UC Davis instead) & thus submitted my secondary about 20 days after I had received it, I feel like I might just have blown my chances of getting interviewed.

(Can you tell SDN is getting to me in the worst way possible?)

Chill! Seriously. You already submitted. I doubt this will make much of a difference.

Does anyone know how big of an advantage it is to interview early? Like say the first 1-2 interview dates available

Oh okay! that's good i thought it's something we need to fight for... didn't pay attention and ended up with oct 3 interview =/ did they update with any sooner dates by any chance?

Would a current UC Davis student or anyone from the first interview be able to say whether the student host program is for 1 or 2 nights? I can't seem to find it again, but I thought that the interview day is officially Fri 9am-3pm, so I'm wondering whether it is better to pay more to book a flight Fri night (avoiding a hotel) or if I can sleep on someone's couch and fly out Sat morning. Of course, this is assuming I am not able to stay for the student-clinic tours. I'm also assuming that it is better to fly in Thu and sleep somewhere, in order to not be late on Fri morning.

Also, how hard is it to actually get an available spot? Is it a relatively small number of spots compared to the number of interview attendees, and is it better to book a hotel? (It's hard to leave everything to 1 week before, since rates and availability can become unfriendly.)

Thanks!

Still no II for me from any of the medical schools I applied to. Completed all my outstanding secondaries last week and I have been complete for Davis since mid-July, but I haven't heard anything from any schools. :bored:

Don't trip buddy. A lot of schools interview the superstar and IS applicants first. Start worrying if you don't have any interviews by December.

If I have no MD interviews by December, im probably jumping ship to DO immediately.

Really liked how @alt12345 and @pyrrion89 provided information for applicants in the 2014-15 UCLA and UCSF threads, so I'm going to go ahead and copy such data for UC Davis! Please notify me of any corrections and I will edit.

Last year's first wave of acceptances: October 16

Notes about wait-list:
- They waitlist for interview invites as well as acceptances.

Good luck everyone!! I'll try to answer any questions to the best of my knowledge.
.
what is the source for the figure that states that 95% of matriculants/96 of IIs are in-state?

This may be a bit unconventional but, I'm offering a ride share to UC Davis from Los Angeles for the 8/15 (Friday) interview date. Personally, talking to someone else about ethical dilemmas and bioethics for 6 hours sounds more appealing than talking to myself. PM if you're interested.

Complete for about a month (LizzyM ~70), IS, no response. Thinking this is a silent rejection.

Congrats to those of you with an II.

Same deal here. I hope they let me know though. Otherwise I still have hope that I might get an II.

Honestly, I resigned myself to the fact that I'm probably not going to attend medical school in California. If it turns out differently, I'd be thrilled, but this state has huge problems in its applicant/seat ratio and many highly qualified students are unfortunately passed up.

Good luck to you, I hope you get that II after all.

I recently got a California II so I'm not giving up hope, but I'm generally an optimist anyhow. I'm not gonna overthink it until after January or If they straight up send me a rejection

Fair enough and congrats

Fair enough and congrats on the California interview.

I mostly just meant my last post as a way of coping with the difficulties of being a CA applicant. I like being pleasantly surprised rather than let down!

I agree with you. Id like to be in California too but it might also be nice to live somewhere else. There can be positives for any scenario....as long as we still get into a med school lol

Still waiting for a secondary from here and Irvine...been complete since 7/19. Since it seems like secondaries go out as soon as you're verified, should I not expect one?

Finished my Secondary. IS, 3.45, 25 Mcat.

They must have liked me enough for a secondary I guess. I bleed undeserved community involvement, maybe that's why.

Idk I wouldn't count yourself out yet. I had a buddy complete at all schools in July. He had interviews at OOS schools from September to January. Then randomly got an interview invite at UCI in April. Granted it did turn into an acceptance, I think it goes to show you that not getting an interview in the first month you submit is not the death card. Now I know people are going to say your chances are slim in April, but they are not going to extend an interview if they aren't considering you and do not have spots available.

Thanks, man, it's nice to hear stories like that.

Anyone signed up for the 22nd interview? Ill be arriving for the interview early and don't really have much to do 21st. Let me know if you wanna hang out or something 🙂

Also in the same boat. LizzyM 73. Really bummed because Davis was one if my top choices.
