2014-2015 University of California - Davis Application Thread

So is the meeting with the dean after the MMI a traditional interview? What does this meeting consist of?

Any hotel recommendations around the school or anyone with insight on the host program.

No secondary and no rejection yet...submitted/verified early June

Ya, that definitely seems off...Call them.
And here I'm concerned about an 8/19 completion and hearing nothing.
Are they seriously now into January with interviews?!

I had my primary verified on 7/19 and still have yet to receive an invitation to fill out the secondary. Should I call the Admissions office and ask about it? Or have some people had to wait for it? From what I understand, they seem to be very quick to invite people to secondaries. A little worried here...

Try not to think of it as an interview. It's more of a group meeting where the dean gets to talk to everyone in a group setting. Just be relaxed and go with the flow of the conversation.

Host program is pretty straight-forward - you get to stay with first or second year medical students. Just be aware that many of them live within biking or walking distance and thus, you won't be able to drive to campus. Just shoot them an email and hopefully, they'll get back to you soon enough. Can't say anything about the quality of hotels in the area, unfortunately. There is the Marriott Courtyard and the Hotel Med Park which are right across from the education building, if you're looking for something close (you can literally walk across the street).
Thank you!!!

According to the dean of admissions, Davis does not like stringing along applicants, so you may be very well in the running still.

Did you check your spam folder. Someone received a interview from San Diego and it went to their spam folder. Maybe give a call and ask about your status.

I contacted them and they said my application was still under review. :corny:

Such a downer to get an II so quickly last year and no love this year. Ehh, the cycle is still (relatively) young I guess.

Anyone know if early interviewers have an easier chance getting in? If the average acceptance rate of interviewers is 40%, is it something like 60% in the early months and then 20% in the later months, or is pretty much the same throughout?

There is no mathematical formula for this. Use common sense. Relax.

You guys get complete emails? Or just via status page?

EDIT: wrong thread. For those with the same question, yes you do receive an app complete email.

I've been wondering the same thing, but I don't think we're gonna be able to get an answer to this.

Don't worry @keevwu, I know you have like the best possible chance of getting in. Because your just that awesome. =)

Are we allowed to bring a note pad to interview day?

I was practicing some MMI questions and I have tendency to jot down my thoughts.

Anyone know if this okay with Davis? I might just call and ask.

II!
For current students or those of you who got one, how did you prepare (or plan to prepare) for the MMI? Any tips? :]
The rest of you, hang in there guys!

Obligatory stats/completion date followup 😛

I brought one with me during my interview (used it to take down names of people I saw on interview day and write down questions in case I had an opportunity to ask some). However, you are not allowed to bring anything into the MMI except this sheet they give you.

You honestly cannot prepare for the stations even if you wanted to. The best thing you can do for interview day is be ready to immerse yourself and react naturally to anything the MMI presents. Don't worry too much about it. You'll do fine. It's a fun day! Good luck.

Secondary received just now.

I thought I wasn't going to get one!

Yeah I don't understand why they're sending me a secondary now! I mean I've been waiting for it but they've already done all these interviews. I wonder why they're sending more...

I have no idea either. But I am still sending it. Fingers crossed more roll in.

It's not over till it's over!

has anyone gone to the Dutch Dinner after the interview? What was it like?

Does anyone know if there is a way to waitlist for earlier interview dates?

I called the admissions office to ask about waitlisting for an earlier interview date and they said to login to the application website and send a message through the message center.

I hope the medical school doesn't call it a "Dutch dinner." Davis is one of the schools that's supposed to be very multi-ethnic, and culturally sensitive, so I'd hate to have them use an expression that is an ethnic slur.

What does that mean? If someone cancels their earlier interview, they'll call you up?

Essentially. Although they didn't say that they would specifically call you, they did say that they would contact you.

how on earth is that a slur? that's like saying calling a chinese restaurant a chinese restaurant is a slur. You need to stop being so hypersensitive and chillax.

Number 1: Do not tell me what to do. Number 2: Physicians are supposed to be sensitive to their patients and their cultural backgrounds. Here's a quote from Wikipedia about the ethnic insult implied in the expression "Dutch treat": " The Oxford English Dictionary connects "go Dutch" with "Dutch treat" and other phrases many of which have "an opprobrious or derisive application, largely due to the rivalry and enmity between the English and Dutch in the 17th century," the period of the Anglo-Dutch Wars."

Wow.

anyone know if uc davis is receptive to in the area emails?

OH SHOOT. Sorry guys, wrong school hahahahahaha i can't believe i made this mistake.
So, so, so sorry! this is the problem with keeping multiple tabs on studentdoc...
I also seemed to have caused a debate on slurs and racism and etc...

i suck. :/

Is that a thing? Afaik, there is no dinner arrangement of any sort. You're here from 9am-3pm, and you get lunch, but that's about it.

I am Dutch and I don't feel remotely offended...

But I would love to hear from this school!

Got a II here! I'm so excited. Anyone have any advice on MMI? or good links? When I signed up the earliest date was in January (!!) so i have some time to prepare 😉

I wouldn't bother (current UCD SOM student). They are pretty fast anyways. Also, they do not accept updates throughout the cycle.

Having gone through the MMI last year and having faced the same anxieties in preparing for this interview, I'd say there's absolutely no need to prepare..and yes I mean it! No background info is required to do well and it is pretty fun! I went in shaking and came out smiling. And I was among the belief that people who said that were just downplaying the experience but NOPE it's true, FUN : ) Just be your kind, happy, empathetic, non-judgemental self and it will work out the way it's supposed to. You got this, I look forward to meeting you all at lunch ; )

Because they liked what they saw on your primary and want to get to know you a bit more. Don't question why you received a secondary, be happy and fill it out the best that you can and hope they like it enough to invite you to interview. I believe Davis interviews til Feb, so until you receive a rejection letter, you're still in the running. Good luck.
