2014-2015 University of California - Irvine Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How is the interview day? I understand there is one round of MMI coupled with traditional 1-1 rounds. Any advise from the folks who have been here? Whats the experience been?

Anyone receive their acceptance packet (either via mail or email)? My portal says I've been accepted, but I don't see any other options for reserving/declining a seat. I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything. Thanks in advance!

Alas, I will be declining this acceptance. Loved the staff and students I met here, but I don't want to needlessly prolong someone's wait on the waitlist. Good luck to all! :luck:

Haven't gotten my packet yet, and my portal situation is exactly the same.

can someone help and comment on my earlier post, pls

Recapped this earlier in the thread, but IIRC it's a 30 minute MS2 interview, an 8-minute (single) interview station, and a 30-minute faculty interview. Your faculty interview may be off campus at the med center in Orange. Personally, I found the single MMI station to be pretty fun.

Good luck! I loved my interview day here. They give you massive amounts of breakfast and lunch food. 🙂

Thanks a bunch. Appreciate it.

can any med students shed light on what being on the alternative list means, chances of getting, and how to get off?

Thanks!

Current MS1 here. The waitlist definitely does move. Several alternate-list students from my year were contacted in late April and invited to revisit day. Most of these students were later accepted. Also know that UCI tends not to reject post-interview which means that you are left in limbo for a while. I didn't hear until June about my acceptance. The gap between revisit day and my phone call was excruciating, but worth the wait. Hang in there, UCI is worth it.

Just placed on alternate list, interview 9/29.

Congrats to those who were accepted!

Received my packet today! All the instructions for registering and such are included 🙂 Good luck to those still waiting to hear

Quick question on the MMI..Is it like a ethical situation? Would be the first MMI. Wasnt sure what to expect. Thanx

Do we provide our own transportation if our faculty interview is off campus?

(Edit: Do we receive an email about the specific interview details? For example, will they be emailing us who we will be interviewing with ahead of time?) Thanks in advance!

Nope! They have a shuttle bus. I was there on the first interview day, but it was very well run. I don't think anyone had a problem with the transit.

Good luck – I'm sure you'll have an excellent time! :luck: Both my interviewers had read my application very thoroughly, so we were able to have some pretty awesome discussions. I think UCI may try to pair you up with interviewers from similar backgrounds, if such interviewers are available. 🙂

@Vaccinator I'm pretty sure I signed an NDA regarding that portion of the interview. 🙁 Nevertheless, I will say that I did not find their MMI station very stressful.

They definitely do. I do a lot of research on type 1 diabetes, and my interviews was a transplant surgeon working on islet cell transplantation to cure it. We had a great conversation about my research and experiences.

Does anyone know if UCI has a class ranking system?
Nope..Its Honors, Pass, Fail.

As per the Handbook:

Available Grades

The faculty responsible for instruction (or their delegates) award grades of Honors (H), Pass (P), or Fail (F). These grades are derived from objective examinations and/or personal judgment.

Has anyone heard anything about PRIME?

Edit: Not like...about what it is...but about acceptances and such 😛 Just wanted to be a bit more specific

False. There is an internal class ranking, unfortunately. *See Ryan's post below for better explanation

HELLO Everybody! MS1 Class President here. First, Congrats to all the accepted people. To those still waiting for some response, I waited for 4 months with no activity despite being complete in the beginning of August, so don't give up hope. For all of those recently accepted I have created a Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/848197985232113/ for you guys to join. A lot of the MS1/2 class will join up and you can ask some of the questions there.

As far as ranking, First year-No Ranking. Second/Third is Honor-Pass-Fail with some sort of ordinal ranking for AOA and such. But overall it's no big deal, pretty mellow environment and good group of people.

thanks for setting up this facebook page! I don't actually have a "uci.edu" email though, so it looks like I can't join it?

hello all!! I received a II two weeks ago and scheduled my interview for January. I was complete late july. So excited to interview here! what's the interview day like for those that have already interviewed/current students?

How long after the interview can one expect to hear back? Is it 4-6 weeks?

Hey everyone! just wondering if anyone knows when orientation starts generally/ white coat ceremony?
Thanks!

Orientation starts on August 5th, and the White Coat Ceremony is on August 7th in the evening.

II yesterday. OOS/LizzyM ~72. Didn't realize how few OOS applicants get invites until I looked into it yesterday! I guess I'll take that as a compliment to my application 🙂 Fortunately, there was an interview spot on the day before my USC interview so I don't have to travel cross-country twice.

I did this exact same thing, only I had my USC interview on a Friday, and I had Irvine on the following Monday. I wish you luck with your interview. I really enjoyed interviewing at each school!

I got an II here last Sunday. Can anyone comment on how disadvantageous it is to only have a letter of recommendation for only one or my 3 most meaningful activities? I was a little surprised I got the II in the first place because of this.

The Admissions website states: "Keep in mind, letters should be submitted from individuals that can address the quality and extent of involvement that an applicant had in the activities they feel were most meaningful to them."

Thanks!!

Only had a LOR from one of my most meaningful activities and I don't think it has held me back anywhere. Personally, I wouldn't worry.

Good luck! Enjoy your time in Irvine!

Quick question...remark to activate UCINetID just got added to my status page on the portal. Does it mean anything? Does it happen by default for all, once you done with the interview? I havent heard anything yet after my interview. If any one with acceptance could comment on this pls?
