2014-2015 University of California - Irvine Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats to all those who got acceptances!! Still hoping for something here.
I believe that this question was asked earlier in the thread, but I couldn't find actual confirmation.
Does Dr. Peterson make all her calls on one day and if we didn't get one, we're most possibly looking at an Alternate List or Rejection email?

Hello everyone! Congratulations to everyone who has heard back. Is there anyone else like myself from the 3/30 interview group who hasn't heard anything? I have not received a phone call or an email for waitlist and my portal just says interview scheduled for 3/30 and nothing in the admit status section.

Thanks!

Same. 3/30 interview group :/

Current student here. Just to reply to you all, @technolize was correct. There is no letter grading system at UCI. First year is P/F with an inconsequential "Letter of Commendation system" in place. IE I got above 90% in Physiology therefore in my Dean's letter they will have a line or two that says "Yo, KoalfiedMD is very koalified in physiology based on our arbitrary measurements of his success... you guys should be impressed." A few of these letters might look "good" on a residency application, but it will not be the difference between you getting into the residency program of your dreams vs. not matching. Years 2-4 are H/P/F which goes into an internal ranking system that basically says "So and so was great/excellent/outstanding in their time at UCI". This part matters slightly more, but again is inconsequential when compared to other factors like STEP score and Letters of Rec.

I have 3 hypotheses for justaquestion's original post.
1) He was misinformed and withdrew for an illegitimate reason. There are plenty of reasons to want to come to UCI/not want to come to UCI, but the info he had was false.
2) He is on a throwaway account and is trying to provide misinformation so that (gullible) accepted students drop their spot in favor of an alternative, moving him up the waitlist or fulfilling some personal vendetta he has against UCI... who cares
3) He is a troll and thought it would be funny to make people that have committed to UCI squirm

As a general rule, take EVERYTHING you read on SDN with a massive grain of salt (including this message) unless the poster convinces you that they are credible.

PS: For any of you that have committed, see you next year 🙂!

Withdrawing today. Couldn't become comfortable with the letter grade system in place.

Say what?? Isn't it pass/fail year one and h/p/f the second year?

This is the first time I've heard of this....

Maybe a current student can clarify. Actually I would really wanna know. I'm from Orange County and UCI was my top choice.

Copy/pasting from a post from last year:

"Irvine is P/F for preclinical years, but it has a hidden ranking system (i.e., they keep track of your performance, use that to rank you by the end of the fourth year). That rank is reported when the Dean or whoever writes your letter of recommendation for your residency applications, not as a "2/100" but more like "performed at the top of his class", "performed in the top half of his class," or... "performed in a satisfactory manner."

From what I understand every school has some ranking system for deans letters and AOA determination. There's really no way around that...

Its P/F first year (top students in classes gets an additional statement in their dean's letter from what I know) and 2nd year is H/P/F.

I believe it's called "lettering" if you score in the top 5% for a block during the first year. Then during second year, the Honors kicks in and essentially takes the part of the "lettering". From everything I've heard and learned this cycle, it doesn't matter where you place in your class as long as you do extremely well on the USMLEs. Class rank can be seen important if you perform poorly on the USMLEs and is also used to rank of AOA. I don't know anything about the Dean's letter to residency.

Any idea when to expect some movement in the Alternate list?

I'm wondering the same thing. Can't say it's very encouraging to see UCI continue to accept people (because of the added interview dates) while other schools are already pulling people off the alternate list. Makes you wonder if there will be any movement, seeing as they could accept a higher percentage of the later interviewees to fill the class (although that wouldn't exactly be fair).

Hopefully we see some movement in the next couple weeks though. When did Dr. Peterson say the 4/27 interview group would hear back? I'm sure the alternate list would start to move shortly afterwards.
The 4/13 folks heard back in 2 weeks...Assuming the 4/27 batch will hear back by 5/16 if not earlier.

that was my estimate as well. i think we'll get some waitlist movement mid may. and i think the 4/27 group will be hearing back earlier.

about the class size tho, it is interesting. i dont know if they're planning on increasing their class size. they're not going to maintain their % of accepted students if they've 2 more interview dates, 40 people each. this cycle will sure be different than the ones before.

My first post! As an alternate lister and (recently) neurotic person, this is exactly what I am worried about. I shouldn't dwell on this, but I have a feeling that there will be less waitlist movement this year due to the late interviews. I was hoping to benefit from the statements that previous classes were largely made up of the waitlisters...about 30-50% apparently. Wishing I had interviewed in April instead of the fall/winter. There have been so many acceptances recently!

Congrats to all recent accepted students! Seems like a great place to learn medicine.

Second the sentiments.

For those 4/13 interviewers who were recently accepted (congrats!) were you told it'd be closer to 4 weeks til you heard? I'm curious because 4/27'ers were told we'd hear late May/early June. Thanks!

Also, per the first years there were late interviews last year + a lot of wait list movement 🙂

At the 4/13 interview we were told that the admissions committee meets every other week on wed/thurs (they met last week for 4/13 group) and that we would hear shortly thereafter.

Gyngyn reported in the WL support thread that there has been movement at UCI.... Isnt that likely recent outright acceptances from people that were recently interviewed? They have not touched the WL correct?

That's what I was assuming as well. They barely finished interview 04/27, so these late interviewees still get an equal chance at acceptance or alternate list. I really doubt they even looked at the alt list yet.

Heard from a friend that there has been some movement on the alternate list already and the admissions office said they think there will still be quite a bit of movement!

Thanks for letting us know! I wonder how that works since the last group still hasn't been given their decisions yet. In any case, it's good news that there will be some movement!

For people on the alternate list, didn't Dr. Peterson say we can have an extra letter of recommendation written by someone we work for (ex: supervisor, PI, etc) sent to UCI May/early June that might be helpful? Or did I misheard her?

didn't hear that on interview day, and haven't heard or seen that yet on uci's sdn page

Thanks for clearing that up! Misinformation is stressful especially during crucial decision making time.

As for the high/low/ranked waitlist, I think some people were told they were on the high wait list only due to second look day. Since there isn't one this year, I don't think people will find out where they are on the waitlist.

I wouldn't worry about the last interview dates hurting people who interviewed early. It would be more logical to look at the last dates together with the larger pool of waitlists to see who is the most qualified. Yes the waitlist is moving and had been moving, I know of a few early interviewees getting off WL since January.

Best of luck!

Surprisingly no one form the Alternate List that recd call/ acceptances seem to have posted anything here............. Or are they busy celebrating🙂

I was accepted this morning as well - received a call around 10:30 am PST! I was the 3/30 interview date and I most likely will be matriculating! Is there a facebook group for accepted students? Thanks! (also - no status until the call as well).

Message me and I'll send you the FB link

any waitlisted students hear any good news?

+3! At least we are not forgotten.

Did everyone on the alternate list receive this email?

+4 I got it and submitted it. I thought they said that they were sending it out to everybody, so it may be a good idea to call them if you didn't get it?

It did say "We hope this electronic message finds you well." I assumed everyone on the alternate list received it because it was automated.

Edit: Doh, I guess electronic message could also just mean 'email' , not necessarily automated lol

so gyngyn is reporting in the WL support group thread that UCI has moved today... any one out there get an acceptance off the WL????

I didn't understand gyngyn's statements. Do they mean that movement WILL occur today or that movement HAS occurred today?

All quiet over here. Strange that there is no overlap between the people that post here and the people getting off the waitlist...but not out of the realm of possibility!

It could be that maybe UCI has moved people to the accepted list, but Dean Peterson has not called them yet. Positive thoughts lol

lets hope and pray that is the case!!!

Is it still possible that the evidence that gyngyn has seen is that people have been accepted who recently interviewed (and that was their first communication)? Either way, its a total bummer that none of us faithful SDN WLers have been accepted grrr

I definitely still think thats possible. People were posting about a 3/30 interview date not too long ago. They had interviews until late April, so it could be the late interviewers! I agree...total bummer, I'm praying we hear back soon!!

Some people recently received a call this past Friday so maybe their decisions weren't uploaded into the AAMC database until today? @prdv I hope your first speculation is true though!
