2014-2015 University of Colorado Application Thread

Has anyone gotten accepted after having not been accepted in a previous batch? My suspicion is that they are taking a portion that are "monthly acceptances" and pushing the rest back til march

This has been my observation/suspicion as well. This is total speculation, but my hypothesis is that they have a numerical scoring system that includes your AMCAS, 2ndary, and interview. If after your interview you meet a threshold score, you are admitted right away. If you do not meet the threshold, your app is deferred to a March decision.

They said at the interview that all apps are reviewed on a rolling basis, but I find that hard to believe. By now they have interviewed hundreds of applicants and I seriously doubt that they go through each of those applications on a biweekly or monthly basis. That's why a scoring system makes the most sense. Then again I could be 100% wrong.

This is what waiting 4+ months for a decision does to a person!! But I still love you CU!!!

So I'm wondering if any other ppl who have interviewed here have just received an email Titled "University of Colorado School of Medicine Prerequisite Report", which lists the required prereq courses and your completion status of them. I'm a little confused as to why I got this email since it says in it that I've completed all prereqs and have no deficiencies. I'm a bit confused by this, has anyone else received this today?

+1, mine was also dated March 25, 2014 😵

Just got the email. Made my heart drop. I also had "no deficiencies".

Why CU! Why!?

Oh maybe they just used the same template from last year and forgot to change the date lol

They actually sent me the same letter (dated March 25) last year on May 30, followed shortly thereafter by email correcting the date. 🙂

This is just a speculation but i am wondering if the pre-req email means anything, i.e. does it mean we are at least waitlisted (or high-priority waitlist, or acceptance soon) and most likely not being rejected at this moment.

I doubt it. I had the same thought cross my mind though. But i think a good question to ask would be if there is anyone who is post interview who hasn't got this email, because I'm starting to think that everyone might have.

Thanks! Interviewed 12/12
Congrats, we interviewed on the same day. =)

+1 here... mine is also dated March 25, 2014 with No Deficiencies.
I interviewed on 12/12 with lepatron who was accepted this Tuesday. Maybe they're checking out prereqs before putting us on a wait list?

From reading last year thread, I have a feeling that email was for people with some likelihood of being accepted... Or maybe I am just psyched out like I have been since I joined this forum. LOL. I guess I need to stop speculating and wait for the official decision.

Some people here are speculating that this email has some sort of correlation with a possible acceptance/wait list. What is your take since you had the same thing last year? No correlation?

I replied to Mercedes email and asked if that email was just one they sent to everyone they had interviewed or if it meant I had some change to my status, etc. I'll post what she emails me back if she does.

FWIW OOS, interviewed 10/31.

Hmm I just got the email and i was accepted in November. Interesting.

So I did some recon on where they are in this whole thing. I called them (btw the guy that answered was super nice). Basically this is what I learned, take it as you will.
1) There are approx. 40 II still to go out.
2) They ant to have them out by 2/14, but that's not in stone.
3) Intv go till the end of Feb
4) Most of the acceptances will go out in march after the end of intv. My opinion is that means that it will take them a week or so after Feb and into March to really start cranking them out.
Calling did nothing for my nerves but hopefully others will find this useful.
When in doubt, call. Why not, right.

Edit: Comments and speculation are welcome on this information. Kinda want to see if anyone else is thinking like I am. Of course speculation doesn't do anything, but....

I don't know. When I received this email last year I was already waitlisted. I'm guessing that they're checking prerequisites for everyone who is still in the running.

I know firsthand how hard it is to wait. I don't think there's anything you can really gain from trying to analyze patterns the admissions department may make, especially since the admissions office is new this year. My best advice to anyone waiting without any acceptances, is to avoid compulsively checking SDN and go out and do some things that you can add to your application if you have to reapply.

Okay so Mercedes replied...

It appears to be a pre-written response about appealing to any deficiencies you have in your pre-requisites. I didn't have any "deficiencies" so that is why I am assuming either she misunderstood my email or I got an automated response. Anyway, no information on what the email means as far as a status change or offer of acceptance.

Meh. Oh well. Waiting continues.

I got a copy/paste looking reply that did not answer the questions I asked in my email to Mercedes. I find it difficult to believe it doesn't have anything to do with potentially being accepted though or at least still being considered.

As an aside:
I Interviewed 1/16 and they said they were behind due to the holidays. Looks like they are sending out offers for December interviews, so hopefully us January folk will hear in February. I do know the adcom meets on Tuesdays but I thought it was usually the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Maybe they meet more often toward the end.

I have a friend who used to be on the adcom, and she said that when they meet, they bring the interviewers in and discuss each candidate as a group and make a decision. This process may have changed since all the change in administration. Dr. Zehnder told our group that they will do 700 interviews for the 184 slots when it's all said and done. That's a lot of discussing.

Nice thing about applying late and interviewing late: The longest I'll have to wait is a couple months. I'm dying!

Did your response from Mercedes say anything about "looking forward to hearing from you once you are accepted'?

What do you guys make of the fact that there are only 5 admitted students in the Facebook group (obviously there are many more accepted at this point just based on SDN posts alone)? Looking at some of the other class groups on Facebook there are typically at least 50 if not 80+ members (re: Tulane, UCSD, Tufts, Quinnipiac, Wake Forest, and others). Seems to me that CU has really not admitted many students at this point compared to other schools with rolling admissions.

The page hasn't been advertised much. I only found it through here.

Yeah, that's definitely a component. I noticed that there is an extra space in the group name between "class of" and "2019" (it makes it hard to find even through the search function). Even still, I think it's strong enough evidence to indicate that there are a large number of acceptances to be issued in March.

Mine did. Got my hopes up a bit but I think they really mean if you are accepted.

Accepted student, just joined.

I have been playing phone tag with someone from student affairs for the last few days, but they haven't left a voicemail. Anyone else gotten a call lately?

I just got a voicemail from a first-year student with some general info about second look today and the Facebook page. She gave her email address in case I have questions.

By the way, how do you play phone tag when one party is not leaving messages?

Just checked. it's probably cause my voicemail is full:panda:

When is second look day?

Thank you for reaching out to the Colorado School of Medicine with your interest and desire to attend our University.

Unfortunately we do not accept updates or letters of intent after you submit your secondary application.

AM

really no updates...

Under review since 10/23/14 - should I assume rejection, any thoughts? This school is so incredible, I wish I just heard some news!

It looks like, per @jackieb_denver on 1/29, they had 40 interview invitations still to go out? They are horrible about updating though and notorious for accepting people up until classes start. I wouldn't give up just yet! They interview through the end of February, and I only had a week notice of my interview date in January (although applied super late). It is an amazing school, so worth the wait! Good luck!

They're not still giving interviews out are they?

Does the school give any preference to residents of border states?
I haven't been rejected yet, still holding out hope. Really like the school / CO community.

Only to the western/northwestern states that do not have medical schools of their own (Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, ?Idaho, I think I'm missing one)

I think they are. Through the end of February and I only had a week notice before mine.

Well that's vaguely hopeful. I submitted December 30th because I forgot to do the secondary because I was overwhelmed. So I feel like I may be out of luck for the most part oops

Totally understandable to be overwhelmed, but I'm 90% sure that's a deadly mistake

They do not- they don't even give preference to Colorado residents. They matriculate more but there's no state regulations like other state schools have. The western states without med schools have an agreement with UW in Washington, not CU. Undergrads have an undergrad exchange with western states but med schools don't.

Patently false per their website (http://www.ucdenver.edu/academics/colleges/medicalschool/education/Admissions/apply/Pages/FAQ.aspx) and MSAR. Don't have access to the latter anymore but they interview ~350/750 IS applicants and maybe 300/4,000 OOS applicants.

Touché- I guess I was thinking along the lines of state legislation regulating the number of OOS allowed. The fact remains that there is no priority of border states- just discounted tuition. I do think that UW has an arrangement with the western states though, no?

This is from CU's website, while it doesn't say explicitly, it seems to imply that Montana and Wyoming residents are put in the same pool as co residents and are thus given greater consideration.

"For selection of the entering class for fall 2014, the Colorado applicant pool along with the WICHE schools of Montana and Wyoming totaled 535 applicants. As evidence of the quality of this group, 284 of these students were invited for interviews. Approximately 3,713 non-resident applicants completed their secondary applications, and from this cohort, 274 were invited for interviews."

Cool. Glad to have an expert on CU's selection criteria in house! Thanks for all the clarification!
